Was unable to register my Whistle (GPS dog collar) with WPA3 enabled. Once disabled, registration worked like a champ. See a couple other comments about WPA3 so will keep disabled for now.

I enabled band steering and immediately got problems with all my Chromecast devices including the Google Home Mini (Every device with Chromecast technology). All of them had connection to the network and internet but I couldn't stream anything to the devices when my phone or tablet were connected to the same AP (I have 7 Eero newest generation in my Home). When my phone switches to another AP there is no problem.

When band steering is of everything works fine.

Btw keep up the good work!

A feature greatly needed, for those of us in low bandwidth areas, is the ability to see at a glance a list of devices, in order, utilizing the network bandwidth. Especially when the internet is saturated. I’ve been desperately asking for this feature.

There need be a way to be able to select 2.4 over 5 based on smart device app being used in support of a device. Such as a weather station limited to 2.4 GH.

BarryB If the weather station only supports 2.4GHz, then it wouldn’t be able to choose the 5GHz network. Why would the eero app need to assign this?

jamcycler I need research this some more. New product and instructions say to use 2.4 Wi-Fi and will not function on 5. May be related to set up of the app. Once set up complete then will work on any Wi-Fi.

For users with multiple Eero networks:

Location-based network selection! (Right now it just stays on last network viewed, first world problem I know lol)

The way Apple has implemented location-based switching in the Home app for multiple smart homes is perfect. Perhaps it could be used as a model? Cheers :)

Band steering is breaking one of my devices. It is able to support only the lower frequency band. When it’s gets pushed to higher band, it disconnects. Perhaps you can allow to disable band steering on per-device basis.

Agree to device band steering by device since I had to install a separate router so as to limit band to 2.4G to initialize a weather station device. Once it was initialized looks like it will use my EERO major wifi for updating stats in the IPhone app selecting the 2.4G frequency to do so. But could not initially get product to initialize by using EERO network. Kept forcing it to use 5G. Have another new home product for handling irrigation that uses an app and need 2.4G to initialize it. Have yet to install it but we will see what happens tomorrow when I plan to install it.

Band steering doesn’t allow HomePod personal requests or AirPlay playing. I had to disable it. Will this be fixed in the future?

Someone may have already reported this, but it looks like toggling on WPA3 means that older devices (in my case a first generation iPad mini) are no longer able to join the network.
This is understandable, but it might be good if there were a warning pop-up when activating that feature that it may affect older devices.

Enabling WPA3 should not shut out older devices. I thought there was a VPN pass through block on the Eero Pro I have installed (the notebook I got from the office uses a VPN that wouldn’t work after I enabled the WPA3 feature. When I called Eero technical support staff, they incorrectly advised that the Eero does not allow VPN pass through. In any event, by turning off the WPA3 feature, I can once again access my office VPN.

Northern Frogus WPA3 has nothing to do with your VPN. The reason the VPN wasn’t working was most likely because your laptop wasn’t connecting to the WiFi at all.

Yes, WPA3 has a transition mode that should allow non-WPA3 devices (the vast majority) to still connect, but there’s plenty of devices that still don’t want to connect at all. I don’t believe it’s an eero issue though. I’m pretty confident it’s the device that doesn’t support connecting to WPA3 even in transition mode.

I don’t know for sure why it was impacting it, but as soon as I turned off WPA3, the older iPads could connect to the network again.

When I turned it on, I had only one obvious device that couldn't connect and that was an older iPod that I use to listen to podcasts.  To get it working again, I had to make it forget the network and rejoin again after turning off WPA3.

Thanks bcotie for bringing this up - now I know, I'm not the only one, and it is not the iPad Mini's problem.

I have had (and am again having) the same problem with my iPad Mini (Gen 1). I have never turned on WPA3 in the Beta Labs. I do have Band Steering, DNS Caching, and Smart Queue Management turned on.

During the 1st go around, eero Support asked me to reset the network - I lost all my device identifications in the process - but my iPad Mini began working.

Now, it has happened again. Since there is no way to save and restore network device identifications and/or network configuration - I will not be resetting my network just to get the iPad working, only to fail a week later - there has to be a less painful way. I know the problem is with the eero - it worked just fine until v3.19 was released last month. Further, the iPad Mini works fine if I turn on Hotspot on my phone. So the problem IS THE EERO for sure.

I've been on hold with support for 20+ minutes or more 3 times listening to looped notes and "Call will be answered in order it was received" - no estimate wait length, no call back. This is so 1990's!

I'll be happy to help eero debug this problem, if only I could get through. email loop time is > 24 hours. What happened? eero support used to be a pleasure to work with... Is it Amazon? or have all the good people left? What gives?

eyeks Oh wow! I had assumed it was WPA3, since mine connected no problem after toggling it off. I actually have two 1st gens, and neither would connect until I turned that off. Hopefully they can get this fixed!

bcotie Would you like to see if it fails again? (I understand if you don't!). Do you use your ISP's DNS or another like OpenDNS, Google, 1.1.1.1, etc.?

Since 3.19 - changing DNS to a new service caused the eero to go berserk - no restart, no toggle DNS Cache, nothing fixes it... returning the DNS to its prior value and a reset does get it back.

I want to use OpenDNS (I have URL blocking configured and ad-blocking is done at the DNS level - very cool!) but I can't go back. I used Google for debugging, but now I'm stuck ;-(

eyeks have you tried turning off band steering to see if that fixes the problem with your iPad mini not connecting? Band steering can cause issues with some devices.

cMoo92 yes, I have tried shutting off band steering - it doesn't help. the iPad mini get an address and within about a minute, it drops the network address and gets an orphan IP.

eero support picked up my tweet - they are suggesting a soft reset one by one of each eero unit (hold reset for 7-10 secs). I mistakenly hard reset last time because I didn't see the yellow flashing in 10 sets so I kept holding in the reset button - damn!

I'll keep this thread updated as I learn...

So I enabled Band Steering and WPA3 a few days back. Everything seemed great at first but then I noticed MT HomeKit lights and my ecobee thermostat gave me “No response” in the Home app several times. Don’t get me wrong ... they were still connected to the eero network via WPA2. They would just stop communicating with HomeKit. Rebooting the eero network seemed to clear it up for a while ... but who wants to keep having to do that? As someone in the tech field my natural thought process was “What has changed recently?”. And that’s when I recalled enabling these eero Labs features. I turned off WPA3 and when I went back to the Home app all those devices I mentioned were working fine. So it looks like I’ll have to keep WPA3 turned off until it’s able to work with 2.4 ghz devices AND HomeKit.
