Eero unit over heating

I have been very happy with my EERO system as one that bought the system (3 units) via the crowd funding stage, and referred to 4 more house holds for same.   I also recently added a beacon to my system to further increase coverage to my bedroom.   However, over the last few days, I am having some intermittent internet connectivity problems.  When I unplugged and re-plugged the unit connecting to the internet to reset, I get that the top of the unit was relatively hot (like a computer running for a while), and the bottom of the unit is very hot (burning) to my hand.  Is the normal?  Do I have a defective unit?  Its only been 2 years!  Please let me know if anyone experienced the same?

    These units do get very warm, as others mentioned. If I were you, I would make sure they are in an open area, not sitting on other equipment that generates heat. Some people may be tempted to lay an eero router on top of a flat laying cable modem; that is ill advised. Same goes, for putting them in an AV cabinet.

    One suggestion is to buy a laptop fan, and stick it under, at least, the eero router.

    Not every wire mesh system is perfect, they all have their positives and negatives. eero seems to be the most stable, very easy to set up, and has great coverage, it just did not work for me, because of the LAN port limitation on the router and that I could not view logs to troubleshoot a problem I had with Layer3 TV. Also, Layer3 TV, it tuns out, required a dedicated LAN port. However, I also needed LAN ports for other equipment. I would say that is the biggest down side to eero, is not the heat, but the limited number of LAN ports on the router. A switch will work for most Ethernet connected equipment, but a streaming service, like Layer 3, and Tablo (Over the Air TV DVR, network based) were very unstable when not having a dedicated LAN port and going through a switch.

    Maybe, when eero comes out with eero Gen 3, they may consider have 4 LAN ports on all their satellites, with 1 WAN and 3 LAN ports on the router. This configuration is available on Netgear Orbi. See: https://www.pcmag.com/roundup/350795/the-best-wi-fi-mesh-network-systems .

      nmetro Still gets hot. Do you think people are stupid? My eero gets upwards of 180 and i leave it on a wire stand in a well ventilated area. I only have my ipad pro and i phone on the network. Get the google mesh system. Works so much better.

    I do agree they do get warm to the touch, I moved them from top the router initially. I then moved them to flat open surface and there are no issues at all with performance. I love the ability to pause and control the internet times my kids can be on or off. Also I like the ability to have updates automatically and seamlessly install. You have the ability to do it manually, if you don't do it, it automatically updates.

     

    I had Orbi, it was nice looking...to me that was it. Their customer support was bad and EERO is able to take care of things if needed. I recommend EERO, Good luck!

      shoeseller01 They can not fix this so that statement is out the window. Can't be fixed or they would have done so. They can not change Firmware or Software to control the heat without some type of cooling which it has non other then a heat sink. That can not be fixed being the no moving parts. IE Fan.

    Thanks guys for putting my mind at ease. From what I have been finding, the orbi's are fast but finicky and netgear service sucks. Google is good but slow. That is how I arrived at the eero. I currently have a dir-890l and am tired of the drops and reboots I constantly have to do. So when I was reading this thread and I saw a reply by Drew, he stated that the fail safe for the eeros was to throttle performance or reboot the router to deal with overheating. I don't want to go down the same rabbit hole.

    I’m having this exact issue. After thinking it was my ISP and the modem I noticed the Eero main unit that’s connected to the modem  was very hot. To test the theory I checked the connection from the modem directly to another device for 15+ mins, it showed no issues. Following this I did the same with the eero (modem connected to eero as per normal) and after 5-10 mins the eero light turns red and we loose internet access. The modem shows no errors so all I can assume is that the eero main unit is overheating. 

    Do I have to buy an entirely new eero system? I do love them as they’ve been fuss free until now *just over a year* in we are running into this constant annoyance.

    Same here. I just bought a router and 3 plug-ins. The router gets so hot that it shuts down. The router's indicator light turns red, all plug-ins are red, the modem is green, so I have to disconnect the eeros router, stick it in the freezer for a few minutes to cool off, reconnect it, reboot the modem, then all is well for a few hours.

    As most users state, it is not in direct sunlight, it sits on a wooden desk, well ventilated, nothing placed on top or near it, plus, it is winter time and the house is a pleasant 68 F. 

    I am considering returning it. Google WIFI did not have these issues. However, I moved the Google to my rental unit and "upgraded" my home unit to eeros. Not pleased with the overheating.

      kardav1101 Thanks so much for sharing your experience, and sorry to hear that you're having concerning behavior on those eeros. To offer a little bit of additional clarification, the LEDs on the eeros will only go red when the eeros themselves lose signal – red LEDs are not a symptom or reflection of eero temperature.

      With that in mind, it sounds like the temperature is a result of the eero falling offline, rather than the eero falling offline because of temperature. We often see situations where the eero has an intermittent or unreliable connection to the modem/WAN line, which results in the eero overworking itself to try and increase stability. In this situation, I'd encourage you to reach out to your ISP to run a health check on your line and modem. If there's any sort of noise on the line or issue with your hardware, they'll be best equipped to take action to improve things

      Past that, I also encourage you to reach out directly to support at support@eero.com or 877-659-2347 if you need any help past that – we'd be happy to run some diagnostics on your network and replace any malfunctioning hardward as necessary.       kardav1101 one would think that sticking an electronic device designed for dry use and not water proof would not be wise since the item can short out and cause other issues.

      Drew you should make that your companies tagline. “We often see situations where the eero has an intermittent or unreliable connnection”. Pair that with the overheating and we got a real winner! Please help with these issues. I spent 200 on a eero pro and it cant even support 2 devices and is always having connectivity issues. Good thing i have 2 wifi networks.

    My Eero pro is overheating and not working.  Goes solid red. Did reset and tried unplugging for over a minute and plugging back in. Same thing. Connected a desktop directly to modem and working just fine so it's definitely the eero. Bought it november 2019. Irritated right now to say the least.

    I just got my eero pro yesterday and in my house the temp is at 70 inside and 35 outside. I too am alarmed at the high temp of this router. I too have a IR beam temp gun and pointing it at the top I'm getting 129-131.

    If someone tells me this is normal I will take this back to BestBuy and exchange it for another brand. There is no way this should run at 129-130. My summers here are in the 110-115 day after day. With the temp of the inside air at 70, what is it going to be like when it's over 100+ in the summer. I do not plan on waiting to find out. 

    Another point, If eero is saying this is normal then what is calling there tech support going to do ? I for one will not wait till it starts getting 110-115 outside to find out if i will be lucky to come home to my house burned down. Let me know soon if I need to return these balls of fire and chose another brand. No band-aid is going to fix this.

      Yuck Thanks for sharing your concerns here. To clarify, this is a normal, expected temperature for the eero due to the way we've designed and built the hardware. Specifically, we've constructed the eero with a specially shaped piece of metal placed directly under the top shell as a heat-sink, designed to efficiently remove heat from the interior. Because we dissipate heat by radiating out through the heat-sink, this makes the top of the unit the warmest part to touch. Again, this is by design, and the eero is equipped with both hardware and software failsafes to keep your units from getting anywhere hot enough to be a hazard.

      This temperature is also comparable to other consumer electronics that you may have running in your home – something like a PS4 or Xbox One, for instance, can get upwards of 160ºF during normal operation without posing a danger to itself or to other nearby furniture and devices.

      Regarding your concern about Summer temperatures specifically, we recommend that the eeros operate in an environment with ambient temperature between 32-95ºF – unless you anticipate that the inside of your home is going to reach temperatures above 95º, then the outside weather won't make a difference on the operation of the eero.

      Drew My house in the summer will be a lot higher then 95. More like 120 or higher. If 110-115 outside then add at min 10-20 to that outside air and now we are pushing 120-135.

      Yuck While I'd like to stress that ambient temperature above 95ºF isn't a safety concern for eero, you'll definitely notice performance issues as the eeros throttle themselves to compensate for the heat. I can't think of any consumer WiFi product designed for optimal performance in those temperatures, but if you decide that eero isn't the best fit for you, we definitely wish you luck in finding something that works better!

      Drew I don't think I can return this fast enough. My other wifi mesh has a built in fan along with no 130 temps to worry about. This is a nightmare waiting to happen. Good luck all.

      Yuck Did you come here to incessantly complain and insult, or to get help and advice?  We get it, you don’t like Eero and your perception of its heat issues.  Move on to something else then.  If your house is 110 degrees inside, you might consider investing in a good A/C system, because few consumer electronics will perform well in that kind of ambient environment.

      David S Big difference between warm and hot. Do you think a 130 unit temp when the house is 60 is normal ? And the fact when summer is here in a few months and outside air is 110-115 what will that 130 temp unit going to be at that point ? The fix is to return, buy another brand and move on.
