danoutlaw3 Most home users do not require vlans.  However, eero may enter that phase.  Netgear and Linksys does offer managed switches.  As you mentioned, you are looking for enterprise network gear.

Sdworman I agree however with many people moving into working at home I see this being a much more needed thing in the future.  

danoutlaw3 well, I am a network engineer and do not find a need for this.  Most people working form home are not the engineers.  When they do work from home, the networks they need access to are accessed over a VPN connection. 

I do understand that if you want to setup a network with switching, routing, and a firewall.  This is not the audience eero/Amazon is serving on a whole.  They are too busy integrating the Ring security and eero and concentrating on the "SMART" technologies.

You never know, they may enter the competitive enterprise network market....  After all, Google is pushing fiber networks to homes....  It's all exciting times... 

Sdworman to your point though with the Smart stuff.  Isn’t it recommended that these items, security cameras, etc be separate from your LAN.  If that’s the case wouldn’t a VLAN be the most practical application?   I’m not a networking engineer I took the wrong road in my career path too many years ago,  but I try to learn a lot about networking.   
 

For me specifically I might have a switch to a work from home job.  My wife works from home and works for the GOVT.  I really want to create VLANs so none of these different walks of life intertwine.  Yes we will both work off VPN’s but I still don’t feel comfortable having my kid’s Nintendo switch on the same network as my wife’s govt laptop if that makes sense.

danoutlaw3 yes, you are correct.  To setup and segment your network, you would separate these devices like they would at an office environment using vlans.  This just makes it more complicated since the cameras, and other smart devices rely on the internet to get back to the vendor's cloud environment.  Also, an environment at home is so much smaller and would not really justify this. 

Hey, if you want to set this up at home, go for it.  I will mention that you need to review the smart devices you have and make sure passwords and other security measures are set correctly.  It really comes down to these devices and how each one is secure.  When you access these remotely, use a vpn connection to do so.  I cannot recommend any, but there are some, I even think eero has a 3rd party you could use when accessing these devices.  Passwords are key.  use unique passwords...

IIHydraII it's called optimize for gaming and video conferencing. That's the SQM you're referring to but the thing is that I want the SQM to work differently The slow speeds is what it's supposed to do so it's limiting speeds to certain devices so the other devices can have better connection and performance. Not one device is hogging up the bandwidth. 

will1234go I know how SQM works, otherwise i wouldn't have referred to it as that. The issue is, it almost seems that the options are reversed and the SQM is disabled when enabled and vice versa, based on  the levels of bufferbloat. For ex, when it was enabled, i was seeing up to 50ms ping spike when under load, whereas it was basically unaffected (0-5ms) when it was disabled.

Sdworman It's been in beta for how many years?

IIHydraII I am not sure, but at least a year.  Anything in eero Labs is beta.  There is also a "Send Feedback" button in the app. 

IIHydraII I fully agree with you. The SQM setting of 'Off' provides a much better result - as if the settings are reversed (off = on).

Before moving to Eero I used Unifi equipment. With SQM on I would get almost no buffer bloat, but without it bufferbloat was high as you would expect.

Complete opposite with the Eero 6+ which is strange.
