PS4 Pro wifi problems w Eero? ...

Anyone else run into problems with these together?

We have a Pro and 3 beacons, the PS4 is within 15 feet of the Pro gateway and a beacon. Wifi signal strength is very good in this room. No issues w previous NetGear router and same modem.

Since I switched to Eero a few weeks ago every time my son turns the PS4 on it asks him for a WiFi connection and he has to reconnect. And the speeds are super slow. It's not uncommon for him to see 30gb down while a device 5 feet away is getting 150gb down.

(I've bounced the modem and all Eero devices)

Any ideas? Thanks!

I’m not familiar with the PS4, but can you go into the network settings on it and “forget” your network and then reconnect? That might help. Otherwise, I’d recommend contacting eero support to see if they can assist.

cMoo92 Thx! Yeah we tried that, no luck with that. No change w guest network either. I emailed support just now.

We are having a significant amount of trouble with our PS4 Slim. We have four Eero Pros. The PS4 Slim is sitting 5 feet from one of Pros. Other devices in the same area are functioning perfectly with no problems.

This setup has worked fine for a long time. We had three Eeros for a while, then added a fourth pro.  We've had this network for about 18 months with no issues.

Then recently the PS4 Slim tells us to connect to the internet when we turn it on. It will not connect unless I go into to the network section and "setup" my network. I don't have to enter the password. Just go through the setup steps.

It will only connect on the 2.4ghz band. And the speeds are terrible.
Once in a great while the PS4 Slim will connect when we turn it on. If I check in the Eero app, the PS4 Slim is connected to the 5ghz band.  It will then drop randomly while we are streaming. The 2.4ghz seems stable, if not slow.

This PS4 Slim had no trouble at all connecting with the Eeros until 3.18.0 update. We had this PS4 prior to getting the Eero network.

Oddly, our PS4 Pro is not having any issues that we have noticed. It connects to the 5ghz without issue. We use the PS4 Slim more often than the Pro (teenage daughter has the Slim in her media room, but the Pro is connected to our main TV and sound system).

I know that 3.18.1 is out and possibly fixes this issue with the PS4. But honestly, I'm afraid to upgrade to it. My husband is now working from home and I've seen reports of devices dropping from the network randomly with 3.18.1.  We can't do that at all. Two of us are streaming classes (I teach, and my high school senior is finishing school). My husband is working all day online using multiple devices. A PS4 Slim that has connection issues is better than devices that drop.

We got the Eeros because we had a $500 Netgear router that was fantastic, when it worked. The wifi radios went offline randomly several times an hour for a second or so. Devices dropped all the time. If we wanted to deal with dropping devices, we would have kept the Netgear paperweight.

Random if the PS4 is so close to one of the eero units, why not just hardwire it? That should clear up all the issues with it.

Random I def hear you. We're running 3.18.1 with no other issues so I think that's okay.

What helped us, so far, was bouncing the modem, then bouncing all the Eeros, then bouncing the Ps4 Pro, twice. I know, odd, and maybe a coincidence, but our PS4 Pro is getting good speeds now.

speedmaster We’ve bounced everything so many times. This started a couple of weeks ago. Last night I restarted the PS4 5 times it actually connected to the 5ghz, so we were thrilled. And then it dropped it. Repeatedly. I gave up and did then setup to connect it to the 2.4ghz.

I intended to upgrade to 3.18.1 last weekend. Except my husband was working over the weekend. Then I got cold feet and just left it.

I’ve made a ticket with Eero. I’ll see how this goes. My last issue had me on the phone with them for hours to not be resolved. Their last ditch effort to solve that idea was to change which Eero was the gateway. It didn’t help and was more work than I needed to be doing.

It was fixed by the next firmware update. Sigh.

Now following this as well.  We just got an Eero Pro through Metronet (no extra nodes though) and my original PS4 is having trouble connecting, and when it does, it's getting speeds in the 200 Kbps range.  It's sitting right next to the router and still having these issues.

I'm running the latest PS4 firmware and Eero 3.18.1 (the latest as of 5 mins ago)

Going to keep digging into this and I'll update if I can find anything that works.  My old service was on an Asus RT-ACRH13, and I'll likely just go back to that if I can't get it resolved.

I still haven’t heard from Eero, besides the automated email when I sent in my ticket.

It’s still doing it. I feel like I should power up the PS3s and see how they work.

I’m still on 3.18.0, but now I’m concerned that even updating the eeros wont help.

So after a ton of digging into discussions where people are having similar problems, it sounds like it's an issue with the PS4's wifi stack.  The older ones (like mine) use a chipset that doesn't like the dual band.  I remember solving this with my previous router by having separate SSIDs for the 2.4 and 5ghz bands, and only connected the PS4 to the 2.4ghz network.  It wasn't pretty, but it seemed to fix the issue back then.  The PS4 Pros use a newer chipset that seems to have less issues, except that I see a lot of people with PS4 Pros saying everything was good until a recent Eero sw build released.  Not sure if that's what broke it because I don't know if it's possible to roll the Eero's back to a previous build.

I have an extra TPLink extender laying around that I'll probably just connect and hardwire to the PS4, so it looks like a wired connection to the console.  Lots of folks are saying if you have the Eero nodes you can just hardwire into one of those and it works, but man those are pricey just for that.  If the cheap extender seems to work I'll update this accordingly.

pugamer1  That doesn't actually make sense for me. We had this PS4 Slim before we got the Eero network. It ran perfectly fine for over a year with the Eeros until 3.18.0. Then, poof.  It only works on the 2.4ghz network, and even then it is slow. I could set up the Netgear Nighthawk (X10 AD7200) to test the PS4's ability, but it is such a pain to shut off the Eeros and put the Nighthawk back in and then configure the PS4 for that SSID again. I really have more pressing things to do at the moment than spend more time on a network that should be working.

I'd really just like my Eeros to be stable again.

I did disconnect something from the Eero that is close to the PS4 Slim, and the PS4 runs fine wired in. The problem is that too many things need to be wired to run optimally. When we first got the Eeros, we wired nothing. Now we are wiring as many things as possible. Clearly this network is going downhill.

I might need to investigate if the firmware for my Nighthawk has even been addressed. I'd have stuck with it happily if the radios hadn't dropped for a second or two multiple times an hour. It was fantastic and  wonderful for a few weeks, then it started having issues. Then it had more issues. However, I had stronger signal over a 3600 sq ft house (not including the basement) than with the Eeros. It was consistent and super fast. Even our basement had a strong signal, and the router was on the second floor. I seriously could use my wifi up the street with speeds like I now get from the Eeros.

The benefit of the Eeros for me have been that devices work consistently without dropping the network, and everything had sufficient speeds.  When the Eeros stop that performance, I'll have to find another network option.

Random Sure, and the recent connectivity issues do line up with what others are reporting as well.  In my case, we just got our Eero Pro today, and after connecting most other devices to the new network, they all seem to run just fine so far.  The PS4 was one of the last devices I hooked up, and it was the one with the issue.  If this just turns out to be an issue in the new software and Eero fixes it, then that's fantastic.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

In the meantime, I'd like to keep using my PS4, and right now the main path forward seems to be to use a wired connection to a cheap extender.  Not ideal by any means, but better than what I'm seeing with a wifi connection from the console to the Eero Pro itself.

After ranting about this again to my daughter, it turns out that she had taken her PS4 to her boyfriend's house over the weekend to test it. Things I'd wish she'd tell me. 😉

The PS4 worked fine there. So it's definitely something with the Eeros.

I guess I'm going to have to make her choose which devices in her media room to wire? She will just have to swap them out depending on what she is using. We're techy people, so our 18 year old has basically her own version of every device as well as having household devices.

I wouldn't be so worried about trying updates if my husband wasn't having to work from home at the moment. I'd like him to keep his job. LOL.

Yeah, it sounds like something changed on their end if the console is working elsewhere.  I'm curious if there's any impact to forcing it on the 5ghz channel via the PS4 interface?  Since mine is a launch PS4, I don't have this option (older network chipset), but apparently the Pro and Slim models do:

    https://support.playstation.com/s/article/How-to-Improve-a-network-connection?language=en_US

    notably:

    1. Go to Settings > Network > Setup Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi > Easy.

    2. Next press the Options button > select Wi-Fi Frequency Bands.

    3. Select 5 GHz Only if listed and press X. 5 GHz frequency band is supported for PS4™ Slim and PS4™ Pro models.

Supposedly doing that will prevent the PS4 from trying to grab the 2.4Ghz channel, which could in turn prevent issues with jumping back and forth.  No idea if it'll fix it, and like I said I can't test it on my system since I don't have that option.  Mine has the Hon Hai chipset and is only capable of grabbing the 2.4Ghz channel.  Might be worth a shot just to see if anything changes?

pugamer1 I wanted to jump in as I’m having the same issue and I thought your solution was a great idea. I didn’t even know you could force bands in the PS4 Pro. Sadly, this did not solve the issue. Oddly, when I attempted to do this I was stuck in a loop where it just kept saying the password was wrong. Right now it only seems to want to connect to 2.4 and will always have lost connection when turning back on. I submitted a ticket as well. Please let me know if anyone hears of a solution. Have a good one!

pugamer1 Yeah, we had tried that. It was definitely a no go.  The 5ghz band is what the Eero isn't playing nice with. The thing only works on the 2.4 GHz band.  Our Eeros did an update on their own last night to 3.19.0.  So..... I'll have to see if that helped.

No time today when the daughter was awake. And now she's busy streaming with the PS4 wired. I'll have to test it out tomorrow.

Honestly, today I was more concerned with finding if anything truly important not functioning properly.  Besides every device desperately wanting to cling to only one of the four Eero pros, it's all peachy.  I've convinced a few devices to move to the Eero next to it. (Literally, 4 feet away, as opposed to where it wants to connect half a house away through walls and on another floor.)

Taxlaxer Excellent!  Hopefully that will address your issues.  The original recommendation from Sony was to disable the 2.4ghz band and force it to use 5ghz, which is more in line with the issues I'm seeing with my launch PS4 (since it's 2.4ghz only).  However, if you're up and running with 2.4ghz only then I consider that a win!

Taxlaxer and Jleyanna  are the PS4's you're using (slim and ?) connected to the 2.4ghz or 5ghz bands?

I've noted that all of my 2.4ghz devices have been struggling with the Eero Pro.  My son uses an old dell laptop (2.4ghz) for his schooling and he's had a ton of issues with Zoom calls.  Like the PS4, as soon as I connected him to a tp-link re220 extender with a dedicated 2.4ghz channel the issues went away.  That's what I've been doing with my PS4 as well and it seems to fix the issues.  I just jumped on at v3.18.0 so I don't have the history like many of you folks do with the version change potentially causing the issue.  :-(

I think at this point I'm going back to my Asus RT-ACRH17 and I'll keep an eye on the Eero community to see if this gets better.  I'm not sure how they fix the issue with 2.4ghz only devices, but it's really impacting my ability to use the router.  A good friend swears by the Orbi system, but I'm not sure he has any non-5ghz devices so that doesn't help me test my situation.  The Asus has two dedicated SSIDs (one for each freq band) and maybe that's it?  Or maybe it's just a better network stack for legacy devices?  No idea.  Either way it stinks because the Eero Pro has a few really nice features.  The notification whenever a new device connects is something I think every manufacturer should be doing!

For reference, the tp-link re200 is set to "high speed mode" which means it's [Eero Pro] <--5ghz--> [re220] <--2.4ghz--> [devices]  It's only connecting to devices at 2.4ghz and it's only connecting to the Eero Pro at 5ghz.

Its a slim. I am thinking its when it goes from 2.4 to 5. It also will jump to the main router instead of my office one. I can view the connection status on my ps4 and I can watch the 5ghz signal strength vary from 50% to 100%. I am unsure how that can change while not moving and the 2.4ghz when connected stays at 100% it is bizarre.

I think this may be related to the "wifi stack" in the ps4 also. I am pondering getting another EERO PRO and putting it in the office and doing a wired connection to the PS4 and let the office pro connect wirelessly to the network.

Jleyanna If I was going to stick with the Eero Pro that was my best option too using the extender.  (connect the extender to the 5ghz wifi and then LAN cable from the PS4 to the extender)  It sounds like a few folks have been doing that with the Eero's too if they have a node near the PS4.  Personally, I just don't want to spend the cash on another router/extender when I have the Asus laying around.  Might be worth trying for your setup though.

If your PS4 slim can connect using 5ghz, you might be able to enable the band steering on the Eero to try and push it to stay on 5ghz.  Not sure if it'll fix it or not, but might be worth a shot.
