eero Pro 6 has slow hardwired speeds with gigabit internet

I am getting slow download speeds on both wired and wifi connections with my new eero 6 Pro setup. On wired ethernet I can get about 400mbps, on wifi about 200mbps. I have gigabit internet with Xfinity BTW. The Internet connection from my router on the eero app shows it delivering 960mbps down. Upload is fine at about 30mbps. Honestly I was expecting a bit more from this product. I see this is a problem in several other discussions but not seeing any suggested fixes, and all kinds of conflicting opinions about what I should expect. If this was normal then why are some users reporting no issues with wired connection while others are having issues?

    Hello rtkramer ,

The eero 6 Pro can push up to 1 gig speeds over WiFi. But this requires optimal setup with minimal interference. Make sure that if you are running multiple eeros that they are at least 35-45ft away from each other. Also review the placement article below to make sure that your eeros are placed optimally.

    https://support.eero.com/hc/en-us/articles/207897393-Where-should-I-place-my-eeros-#:~:text=For%20a%20quick%20and%20easy,eeros%20out%20around%20your%20home.

After we verify that the eeros are placed correctly and placement is not the cause we can start further testing. Can you please answer the questions below?

    1) Have you tested the speeds with a device connected to the modem?

    2) Do you know if your eero is in a double NAT? If so, it is possible that the upstream router is limiting the speeds you are able to pull through the eero. You can try and put the eero into the upstream routers DMZ or see if you can bridge the upstream router.

    3) Are you using the ethernet that came with the eero?

James I am following all the advise in the article.

#1 Not sure what you mean, the only device I can connect to my modem is a router, the eero is a router, so yes I have tested it with a device attached to the modem, the eero. The eero says is has a good connection 1gbps.

#2 Only router connected to my modem is the eero router, no other routers connected if that it what you mean.

#3 yes using the supplied cable, I have also tried a Cat 6 with same result.

      Hello rtkramer ,

Alright. Seems like most of the simple stuff will not resolve this. Do you have another eero that you can swap with the Gateway to test if the specific eero is bad?

James I purchased an eero 2 pack from Best Buy, with 2 routers, I swapped between each router resetting my network both times.. I get the same speed on both routers about 450mbps wired to ethernet, I am getting wifi speeds about the same now as long as I am close to the router. Still not getting close to gig speeds wired or wifi. Next?

      Hello rtkramer ,

Alright, at this point you're going to want to give our support a call so we can gather more information and review your network to continue troubleshooting. A wired eero Pro 6 should be pushing close to the 1 gig speeds you are seeing on the speed test and we need to take a closer look to find what the cause is for this limited speed. I have shared an article below that will help you identify the best number to call or if you wanted to email our support you can email support@eero.com.

      Hello mafoe ,

Thank you for reaching out to us and welcome to the Community! I understand that it can be frustrating when a product is not working as desired but lets start some troubleshooting to try and identify what the cause of the slower speeds might be.

The first step is to verify that the eeros are placed optimally. We generally recommend that eeros be placed between 35-45ft away from any other eeros. So if you have multiple eeros lets make sure they are a proper distance from each other so we can reduce WiFi congestion. Also please review the placement article below to make sure the network is not being impacted by other objects in the environment.

I've been playing around with my triple Eero Pro 6 setup. All my Eero nodes are connected by ethernet. The first thing I noticed is the speed with wired as well as wireless devices was well below my max speed (300mbps). While testing both wired and wireless was struggling at 80mbps. I removed all my Eero's and tested 300mbps so there's definitely something going on with the Eero's.

Besides the drop in speed I also had problems with wired hubs (Philips Hue and Ikea Tradfrir) disappearing and becoming not accessible. After a reset my Ikea accessory are accessible for a limited time. After a while it just becomes non responsive. I also noticed there's a slight delay when opening sites.

Eventually I removed the ethernet cables from all my Eero nodes except the gateway. All my wireless devices are getting a speed of 300mbps (which is the max) and none of my other hubs disappears. In fact, the delay also vanished and are very responsive.

The wired devices however are still getting approx. 25% of my max. speed.

    TL;DR:
I removed the ethernet cables from my non-gateway Eero and speed went up. The response time of the wireless devices also became faster.

      Hello YuenW ,

It sounds like the problem might have been the ethernet cords or possibly problems with the ethernet ports. With the limited speed of 80Mbps that you mentioned the first thing that comes to my mind is that some of the ethernet cords might only be rated for up to 100Mbps. If the ethernet connecting the eeros up was limiting the speed then WiFi speeds would also be limited.

When the eeros were wired up did you test the WiFi speed while connected to the Gateway eero?

      James

Yes I've tested it while connected to the Gateway Eero (why isn't eero capitalized btw? :p). I already have an active ticket and your colleague is giving me great tips.

Apart from all that, I've very conflicting results. Now I've reset everything and tested my wired speed by directly connecting to the router itself I'm also getting 80/90 Mbps tops. I changed the router to bridge mode as well but the results are the same. It might have something to do with the connection to my ISP so someone is coming over to take a look at it. Till then I'll just have to wait.

      Hello YuenW ,

Yeah it sounds like that is a possibility. Generally when I see speeds limited like this on an eero network it is the ethernet cable or something upstream to the eero network is the cause when it comes to testing speeds that are wired. When the ISP tech does show up ask them to double check your ethernet cords as well. They should have a tool that lets them check the possible speeds on the ethernet cords.

In regards to why we do not capitalize eero, it was a decision made with thoughts towards branding.

Thanks for the advice. All in all, I'm very pleased with my eero network and the support. It just feels weird not to capitalize a brand name :).

I am having the same issue. Good connection to eero, over 900mbps up/down, but 246/184 at ethrnet port and 110/176 wifi right next to the unit. Installation done by Frontier and a technician is coming to the house next week.

When my input comes straight from the ISP into Eero, my Eero Pro 6 slows down the wired connections coming out of it, aside from anything it's doing with wireless.  A lot...meaning a 33% to 50% reduction.

I have  1 gig 2-way fiber service from CenturyLink.

In my setup, I have a PPPoE feed from CenturyLink, and I updated the firmware such that the Eero can now take a feed using PPPoE instead of the usual DHCP. This functionality was just released with the latest firmware update (see https://support.eero.com/hc/en-us/articles/207852843-Does-eero-support-PPPoE-).

To isolate the problem, compare these two scenarios:

CenturyLink PPPoE Feed  ---->. Eero Pro 6 with PPPoE firmware -----> Wired Connection to Laptop:  400-000 mbps

CenturyLinkPPPoE Feed -----> CenturyLink Modem-------> Eero Pro 6 (using DHCP from the modem)------->Wired connection to Laptop:   900 to 950mbps

Same cords, same laptop.  In the second scenario, the Eero passes the hardwired signal just fine.  In the first scenario, the speed is somehow getting throttled.

I can live with the second scenario but I was really hoping I could eliminate the CenturyLink Modem.  I have a TP-Link router than can produce the same results.  Something about the way Eero is processing the ethernet feed seems to be the problem.

Any suggestions specific to this case?

arm I have the exact same problem.

Citylink ONT ----> eero Pro 6 with PPPoE ----> Wired to laptop: speeds from 200 to 800mbps

Citylink ONT ---> Technicolour Router ----> Wired to laptop: speed solid 941mbps

Citylink ONT ---> Technicolour Router ----> eero Pro 6 ----> Wired to laptop: speed solid 941mbps

As you, same wires same laptop.

Really does seem the implementation of PPPoE on the eero is the culprit.

Support seem unaware of the issue.

Val33 Exactly.  The eero pro 6 wired output works fine with an ordinary DHCP feed but the new PPPoE implementation slows it down, a lot.  This problem has nothing to do with wireless and cabling is not the issue.  Hoping a firmware fix resolves it.

arm Same issue. It’s been driving me nuts. As soon as I move to using the gateway functionality of eero, wired speeds are throttled. If I use them as APs and use DHCP from my modem, I’m back to full speed. I’m going to run it for a few more months and hopefully a software update will address it. If not, I’m switching back to Ubiquiti and eating $600 or whatever.

arm I’m glad I stumbled on this thread as I too have the same problem and was pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. I bought a media converter and was hoping I could get rid off the ISP modem/router. Guess I need to wait for Eero to fix this issue.

Update 2/12:  tried it with latest update (6.8). Still not fixed.  1/2 usual gigabit speed. Anybody out there?  Note this has nothing to do with cabling etc.  eero passes through using DHCP just fine from a different PPPoE router. There is something wrong with your PPPoE implementation.

arm I tested the speed with PPPeO again today and 6.8.0 firmware update. My internet speed is 1000/750 down/up. With PPPeO I’m getting around 800/400 now. It’s definitely faster from before but still room to improve.

I had the same issue, and for me I fixed it by replacing my switch, which must have developed a fault.

You could also try unplugging and replugging your connection into your switch/router to renegotiate the transfer rate.
