Wifi-6 Speed Disappointing, and interference from other routers

My setup:  Gigabit Fiber, EERO-6 Pro, Nighthawk 7000p, ISP Modem(w/Wifi)

Tests: Speedtest.net (direct to my ISP actually). No server changes, each test >5x

Ethernet to ISP Modem ->  960MB Up/ 960MB Down (nearly 1GB)

All devices were ~6 feet from the router.

Euro-6 Pro (Wifi-6/802.11ax):

Wifi-6 Card:  640MB Up/ 750 Down (Desktop)

IPhone-11 Pro Max:  550 UP/ 550 Down  (Phone) <-- This is Wifi-6 Enabled!

MacBook Pro: 550 UP/ 750 Down (Laptop)

Turning on the Nighthawk (they are 'fairly close ~8inches) - 150Down / 20-75 up (All Wifi Devices on EERO)

Security was tested both enabled and disabled, no difference was found (NOT using any advanced security/AV/Site Filtering/etc)

Nighthawk 7000p (Wifi-5 / 802.11ac):

Wifi-6 Card:  560MB Up/ 600 Down (Desktop)

IPhone-11 Pro Max:  450Up/400 Down (Phone)

MaxBook Pro: 450 UP/ 500 Down (Laptop)

My question is this:

(1) When turning on the other router, EERO's performance drops DRASTICALLY-- the other 2 routers operate just fine though. You can see in "SpeedTest" the meter bounce and struggle all over the place (albiet at low datarates, bouncing 20,60,30,80,40 in speed).

(2) I'm seeing on the Wifi-6 card that the Up/Down link is 1200mbs, not 2400mbs.  This is the latest and greatest Wifi-6 PCIe card w/Intel Chipset.  Why is the performance not anywhere near the 1gb limit (like the ethernet)?? Its not even hitting 1/2 of the 1200mbs up/down (though it should report 2-2.5x that).

(3) Why does the IPhone-11 (the 11 and 12 are Wifi-6) not gain any significant boost in performance over the Nighthawk Router.

The Ethernet direct to modem connection is constant at 960MB up/down... I would have thought the EERO-6 Pro would perform much closer??

Ping times are 11-12ms on the Nighthawk, 8-10ms on the EERO-Pro to the ISP Speedtest.

Anyone have any ideas?

  • You’re murdering your wireless environment by having both routers turned on at the same time. That’s the reason you’re seeing decreased performance when you turn on the Nighthawk. You’re creating *tons* of interference—especially when they are so close to each other.

You aren’t going to max out your Gigabit internet connection from a WiFi device. You definitely can from a wired device (which you’ve proven), but your WiFi devices don’t support those high of speeds in a real world environment. You’re actually getting really good results.

cMoo92 one at a time.. both are not on at the same time.  My WiFi devices do infact support those speeds.. especially the PCIe board which fully supports 2401 up/down.. full 802.11ac... it’s 4 feet away and gets .. the same as the iPhone... 650mbs.

cMoo92 please.. unless you know what you’re actually talking about.. don’t commentZ I’m not murdering anything, and even if I did have another router in, they are separated by frequency... not to mention does your neighbors WiFi “suddenly” murder your throughout when they have a router too? Not to mention the other non-sense your posting, like waiting for “days” for it to “learn” my environment. Lemme tell ya— this little toy doesn’t have some Fancy AI, at best some heuristics which it can haven’t in 30 seconds... it would appear you like to comment with a lot of useless info, are you in their marketing department or sales so we don’t all return these now?

  • From Reddit a few hours ago, others are seeing the same on Fibre (basically Wifi-6 speeds aren't nearly what they should be)

"Mine is set up now and I’m seeing around 300 Mbps on a fios gigabit connection. Thought it would be much faster? I can confirm on the main router that is wired to my ONT the download speed is 900+"

On the new eero pro 6 I’m only getting 300 if I’m lucky.. it sometimes drops to 40-50 on the satellite closest to the main unit. Not sure what’s wrong but this is not what I expected. Testing on iPhone SE 2nd gen which has WiFi 6. Noticed my amazon fire cube is buffering a lot too now."

  • First off, WiFi 6 refers ONLY to the speeds on your home network, NOT your speeds on the internet.

second, WiFi Internet speeds are ALWAYS slower than wired speeds. Your peak speeds may sometimes approach Ethernet speeds, but overall your average speeds are usually half of whatever Internet speeds your paying for. If you look on the box for your Eero’s as well as all other routers, they all say that.

Richard1864 Richard... let me give you a better example:  Direct-to-socket connection via native host API (Winsock/Sockets/etc).  The Eero Pro-6 is topping out at 650mb/sec.  (There's no internet involved).  Enternet ports are transferring at 1gb (980mbs to be specific).   My 7000P Nighthawk is pushing 550/mbs (Wifi-5).

So, to address your "Wifi" (lets forget the word 'internet' since I eliminated it, and it has nothing to do with this anyway since I have a constant 1GB to the Speed-test server (its my ISP, direct-fiber, no hops anyway).

My point is simple:  I expected more than an 18% improvement over Wifi-5 (802.11ac) compared to Wifi-6 (802.11ax).  In theory, the spec got upwards of 2.3+GB/sec does it not?  Furthermore, my Wifi card indicates the connection is 1201/1201 (up/down link speed) [yes thats 1201, not 1200 ].  So, in theory, latency aside (since we're talking a stream not burst), it should be able to move >650mb/sec, and it does NOT.

However, I'm now seeing reviews of other routers which are infact hitting the 1gb/sec speed (those on fiber also) with other routers, and testing against the EERO and topping out (like myself) at 650mb/sec.

To ME this implies there's something wrong with the implementation/firmware or just a plain 'ole bug in the code, or its CPU isn't fast enough to handle Wifi-6.

  • aaronuae Thanks for notifying us about this! The eero Pro 6 can theoretically get 1g over wifi, however real world interference and other factors can reduce that value. Based on the results you mentioned, all devices seem to be getting about 100 mbps (give or take 20) more than the previous wifi 5 router you were using. While it may not seem like a lot to some, a lot can be done with 100 mbps. According to Netflix's website, HD streaming only take about 5 mbps so thats 20 extra streams, theoretically.

All that said, I understand this may not be the results you were expecting. You can always give us a call or send an email so we can look into things further with you.

  • Its not about if "100mbs" is faster than it was, etc.  Its the fact it can't keep up with the spec.  Nor is it able to deliver 1gb (or even close to it) for a direct PEER to PEER connection.  (Wifi-6 to another PC connected via Wifi-6 or ethernet for example).

As far as handling "x netflix" streams, 802.11N is sufficient (actually 802.11g)... and I don't care about 'netflix'.  I need to move gigabytes of files from one location to another over the network (there's no internet involved).  And the EERO pro-6 is running 40-50% slower than the spec.  And thats a problem.

Richard1864 umm... no you’re much worse off... 41mb up speed? Are you using a 56k modem for your uplink?? You’re WAAAAYYYY worse off than me.  I have 1gb up/down wired and 650mb up/down WiFi (peer to peer(enternet)) or internet— same for me since speedtest goes directly to my isp.. I thought I had it bad.. ouch!

aaronuae I believe Comcast/Xfinity is the largest broadband ISP in the country. Whatever technology they're using caps the upload speeds. Therefore, anybody on Xfinity get get more than 40 mbps up. I don't believe fiber is available to even half of the country so you're lucky to have access. You are in the minority.

  • You note that your device is connecting at a 1201Mbps transfer rate, so your 650Mbps speed test is right in line with that (WiFi speeds will be about 1/2 of your devices negotiated transfer rate). As listed on the eero website:

    PEAK PHY RATES

    2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps

    5 GHz Lo: 1201 Mbps

    5 GHz Hi: 2402 Mbps

So this tells me your eero is using a 5Ghz channel in the lower spectrum band. After a few days as the eero network optimizes itself, it might switch to the higher spectrum bands if your wireless environment allows for it (based on other interference, etc). Then you’ll probably see higher speeds.

  • Having the same problem. I’m on Google Fiber not even breaking 150 Mbps on my iPhone 11 Pro Max (wifi 6).

This is happening for me in both bridge and automatic mode

I was getting faster speeds on my Orbi setup that uses 802.11ac

This is my first experience with Eero and so far, I'm very disappointed and frustrated after dropping $600 for the 3 pack

I ran this speed test right next to one of the satellites. I'm pissed.

  • To add to the mystery, my 2016 MacBook Pro (802.11ac radio) is getting faster speeds than an iPhone 11 Pro Max that supports wifi 6.

None of this makes sense and I'm very close to returning these and going with the new Orbi wifi 6 devices if I can't get a resolution from Eero Support when I call them later today...

lbouriez I’ve done some additional tests— if you can move the eero away from any other routers, or turn others off, try the speeds again... I’m seeing that the eero either cannot share channels properly, or cannot correctly find a less used channel, or simply has some login flaw in its filtering (dunno if you are using any kind of SDR inside or not).. either way, it suffers horribly with any RF emissions near it (my other equipment continues to operate fine either way— it’s a eero problem). See if that makes any difference if in fact it’s near any other equipment.

Ya.. I’m not thrilled with a lot of things... and I haven’t even started in the lack of any web interface and lack of real configuration— clearly it’s for grandma to use— which it does do very well.. what’s good for grandma might not be what you’re looking for— I’d at least like to have the ability. Oh well... just wanna a side router with WiFi-6 for all the “speed”... which.. it hasn’t delivered. But, in your case, those words are awe full and your setup isn’t too different from mine... but when I had the eero near anything else it’s speeds dropped to 30-80mbs.. or about a 65-85% loss in speed.. try a long enternet cable and move it away and keep us posted!!

  • So, further testing (on a MacBook Pro 2017, on 802.11ac):

Top 3 tests are on 802.11AC (wifi-5) with the EERO 6-Pro >OFF< (and you can see my download is topping our right at the max).

Turn it on (even in proximity) of my router causes significant performance degragation.

Furthermore, with only the EERO 6-Pro on and the 802.11ac router off, I am getting 350-400mbs on 802.11ac from the Euro 6-Pro (using it in Wifi-5 mode basically, since not all my devices are going to be wifi-6 naturally, such as my laptop, PS4, or my FireTVs (SamSung)).

Latency is ~9-11ms Wifi-5 or 6, so no improvement there.

My link speeds according to my Wifi-6 adaptor are really odd-- I am seeing the EERO pro selecting Channel 40, 80ghz, with Various Link Speeds:  1201/1201,  6000MB/6000MB ** Note thats MB, and 1201/250.

There seems to be significant interference from the EERO pro and my routers. If, however, I turn off the EERO pro, and turn >ALL< (I have 5) routers on, they perform identical (regardless of how many I turn on or off), until I turn the EERO on... then ALL of them (performance wise) go down by 50-80% and you can see (speedtest.net) the 'needle' "POP" around (no longer smooth) bouncing around.

  • The 2400 mbs is the connection called the backhaul between the Eero routers that are triband capable. That speed is only available between the Eeros and shouldn't be confused with available wifi6 speeds. I have a cost effective propietary solution for cable gigabit customers and I'm hoping Eero will contact me for a coop partnership which would secure a basic monopoly in the wifi 6 wireless mesh market. I get 800+ mbs wifi 6 download speeds (949mbs is my max download spèed at the gateway Eero wired to the modem) in all the rooms that possess an Eero 6 pro. So hang in there folks for a solution is coming hopefully soon because the Eero6 Pros are hands down the best wifi mesh networks on the market. I spent nearly 100 personal hours troubleshooting this prolific issue and developing a cost effective permanent solution. So forgive my lack of transparency at the moment, but those were a painful and intense 100 hours of time invested and out of pocket expenses with no guarantees and risk.
