Eero Plus VPN - huge slowdown

Reinstalled Encrypt.me through Eero Plus trial. Speedtest used to give 350+ up and 9+ down. With Encrypt.me , getting 3 up and 3 down. What gives ? I've rebooted the computer to ensure settings are fresh. Not sure what to think.... (my iMac does not seem as slow as 3 down, but not sure what to think of Speedtest results.

Using fastest available setting in Encrypt.me . Using whatever server pops up in Speedtest as it tends to match server with location.

Others with similar experience ?

    Update to VPN slowdown....

Original Speedtest was through Ookla.  Have repeated it here with wired iMac and stayed same.

Rested with Speedtest in Eero app, showing 289 down and 9 up. Very strange - figured Ookla was the standard but something about the VPN throws things off. I normally use ExpressVPN and get 350 down. Not sure why downloads are showing as lethargic under Speedtest.net

This is not an issue with eero—it’s with the VPN service and their servers. VPN is almost always going to result in slower speeds, but can vary depending on what server you’re connected to. I live in Texas and so Encrypt.me would connect me to the Dallas servers because they were closest and thus should be fastest. I found this wasn’t the case at all and instead connect to somewhere else.

I also don’t connect to a VPN when at home. I only connect when I’m on a network I don’t trust.

cMoo92 Thanks again. I'm pretty familiar with VPNs and know they're completely separate from the routers generally. In my case with 3 wired Eeros, the pairing of Encrypt.me with the eeros doesn't provide the best experience though. As you suggest also, perhaps we don't need VPN at home. Surfing anonymously does have advantages at times tho :)

Wondering if there is any kind of protection through eero Plus for all the LIFX lightbulbs, thermostats etc in the home. .... Just wondering if the firewall in the eero is enough...

cotedan87 it’s not eeros fault though. I bet if you went to somebody else’s house you’d have a similar experience.

I think the firewall is enough—or as much as can be hoped for. The biggest vulnerability will be the IoT devices themselves and their server backend. Most of those devices are only going to communicate over HTTP/HTTPS so a firewall won’t do much good there.

cMoo92  very true. The bunch of lights are dependent on LIFX, and those are connected to Google. The Nest cams, thermostat, weather sensors, garage opener etc are all connected through 3rd parties beyond eero. Is there really much we can do eh ....

After doing more reading and resetting the 4 eeros here, started up eero Plus again. Seems my earlier woes are gone. Have reset the 4 eeros and remounted from scratch....

Ad blocking isn't perfect but decent. Eero Plus has stopped a few malware sites in just a few days. Malwarebytes works alongside Bitdefender antivirus perfectly.

Encrypt.me VPN gives speedtests at between 30 and 50% of full speed, which is expected and excellent. Love the way it automatically figures out if you're on a trusted network or non-trusted.

1Password subscription also is working fine. Have integrated a former account into the new one. Customer service has been exceptional.

Thus, will be with eero Plus for the next year. So far, happy camper (even tho my earlier experience wasn't the best).
