Eero Pro 6E power consumption / heat

I have an Eero Pro 6E, connected to a fibre ONT for a 500/70 service. It is a single eero serving wifi, as well as wired access for other devices

Currently most devices are fairly idle with minimal traffic

Power consumption is stable at around 18W with the unit warm to touch on top, and approaching burning underneath.

What are others seeing on the 6E?
I’m wondering if perhaps there’s some process spinning the CPU, since 18W/heat seems quite excessive when near idle

By comparison my previous Fritz router would take 5-7W, and it was hard to push it much above.

    Hi planetf1

The power consumption sounds about right.  Even when you are not doing anything on the network itself the eero are quite busy at all times.  They are constantly monitoring connections between each other for example.  Burning on the bottom is unexpected.  eero do get warm, uncomfortably so, but feeling burning to the touch sounds like it is getting too hot.

I would recommend you call support immediately: https://support.eero.com/hc/en-us/articles/207376426-How-do-I-contact-eero-support-

At 500 Mbps the power goes up to ~22W

By comparison I compared at the same data rates/same connection with my fritzbox 7530. This is only wifi 5.

    2.4 Ghz only - 3W idle, 4W max speed (<100)
    2.4+5Ghz - 4W idle, 6W max speed

and of course much cooler - unsurprising with only 1/4-1/3 of the heat to dissipate,

Note - single eero here, so there is no additional backhaul traffic.

It seems rather inefficient in comparison

I’d love to see what’s happening on the CPU and other silicon.

So At my current energy rates (0.10 6 hours a day, 0.43 18 hours a day) that’s approx £55 pa (vs approx £18 pa previously)

I noted at https://support.eero.com/hc/en-us/articles/207625336-How-much-power-does-eero-use- it says 5-7W is normal - I was expecting more like that

A thermocouple taped to the underside just below the bar code shows a surface temp on the plastic of around 42C with an ambient of 21C. Device is on a solid wood surface in the open. So burning was an exaggeration, but ‘feels hot’

planetf1 As stated earlier I would recommend you give eero support a call.

On my units, the surface temperature on the eero Pro 6E is significantly lower than on the eero Pro 6.
