Help on how to set up an Eero 6 system to replace/supplement an Orbi system

Hi, hope some of you experts can help a non-network expert with some questions!?

I have had a Netgear Orbi system for a couple of years, but with a growing number of smart home devices being added, what was very good WiFi speed (about 400 MBps with fiber speed of 500 MBps into the house), it now maxes out at about 20 MBps. No troubleshooting has availed this and I now have an Eero 6 system under shipment.

I am considering three options:

  • Use the Eero system for all IoT devices and set up the Orbi system from scratch and use that for phones/tablets/computers around the house, hoping splitting the load between the networks will help and that Eero is better at dealing with many IoT devices
  • The other way around, keep the IoT devices on the Orbi system and move phones/tablets/computers to the Eero system, hoping this will take sufficient load off the Orbi system to increase speed
  • Remove the Orbi system completely and use the Eero system for everything

I am leaning toward the first, but fear this might cause interference? Any guidelines to help choose the way forward?

Should I go with option 1 or 3, where the IoT devices will be transferred to the Eero system, I would also really like some advice on how to do the initial setup. With the Orbi system, a dozen or so devices have been assigned static IP addresses (improves reliability or is required to set them up in Homebridge). I have been thinking I could:

  • First turn off the Eero system
  • Then set up the Eero system with same network name and gateway IP as the Orbi system (friends tell me this will most painlessly allow all devices to reconnect when turning on the Eero system)
  • And then set IP reservations for devices that need this

Would this approach work?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Eero and Homebridge don't appear to play well together. I am just now starting to realize that after spending countless hours debugging various networking issues with my smart home setup. The advice I've gotten so far from the Homebridge community is to turn off Eero's Advanced Security features which is one of the main reasons why I bought this system.

You can read more about this here:

Thanks for the tip, ydogandjiev . However, I have been able to make this work very well now. I kept the Orbi system connected directly to my IPS's router, then the Eero system is connected to the Orbi base station and Eero in bridge mode. That works even better than I hoped; I can now use Orbi for general IoT and Eero for everyday use that requires more speed, and there are no double-NAT issues.

That's great! I actually discovered that my issue stemmed from the HomeKit Accessory Security feature that gets enabled when adding the Eero routers to HomeKit. Turning off this feature appears to resolve the problem. I posted more details about that here:
