Not sure what I need to purchase

Thinking of making the switch from my current setup consisting of ASUS RT-AC88U router and 3 wireless AP's to eero .  What would I lose, if anything, by eliminating the ASUS RT-AC88U?  Does eero   allow me to port forward for instance?  What are the pros and cons of keeping the ASUS RT-AC88U and replacing the wireless AP's with eero  ?   Coverage requirements are 2900sq foot house, 3 floors.   Modem is located on the top floor.

      Jeff C. Thanks Jeff.  I'm not sure if it would be beneficial for me to keep the ASUS RT-AC88U or to scrap it and go 100% eero .  What's your professional, (not sales), opinion please?  

       

      *is there a downside of me keeping the ASUS RT-AC88U

      In most cases, we recommend that eero completely replaces your existing router. If you were to keep the existing router on your network, you'd have two options:

      1. Bridging your eeros: This would mean you would lose access to many of eeros advanced features, but still get all the benefits of our mesh. All the networking responsibilities will be coming from your upstream router, and eero will pass those along.
      2. Double-NATing: When double-NATing your network, you would essentially be running two networks. eeros can't mesh with other routers, so you would have your eero mesh network running and the ASUS network running. This can cause some issues with devices, especially if one connects to the ASUS network and not the eero network.

      Besides for port forwarding, is there anything else in terms of advanced features that are a necessity for you?

      Jeff C. Great info, thank for sharing.  Port Forwarding is really the only feature that I am concerned with.  I'm leaning heavily towards going 100% eero.

    Jeff C. I have a 5 port GB switch in my family room that connects directly to my ASUS Router.  Once I replace the ASUS with eero,  would I be able to connect another  eero  to the switch located in the family room?

    I only use two desktops in my home, connected to a switch box to a modem.  Would EERO be something that I can add to my configuration and dispose of the switch?

      Vet74 I don't think so, not via ethernet... . maybe if one or both of your Desktops have integrated wifi.

      Vet74 Thanks for reaching out and for your interest. Do you have anything such as a router between your modem and switch, or is your modem also a router? 

      One of the eeros will need to be connected to your modem, and then you could place the other eero wirelessly in the home and hardwire the desktops to it. You can also connect a switch to your eero, which will also you to expand the number of available Ethernet ports.

      Jeff C. Nope, no router just an A/B switch.  Whichever computer I'm going to use I just throw the switch to that computer.  Both computers have WiFi capabilities.
