WPA3 when trying to connect older IPad

I had to disable the WPA3 in order to allow an older IPad to connect.  I found this solution in the apple threads and in searching here it looks like it might be a known issue but didn't see a way to +1 in these threads.

    I experienced the same issue with my 3rd gen iPad. When WPA3 is enabled my iPad can’t connect to WiFi any more as it is not supported. However I am not sure why the router is not reverting back to WPA2.
