Posted Amazon Review: Decent connectivity (I guess), but ... DON'T BUY THIS IF...

Just posted the following review to Amazon.  Really frustrated with ignorance of a common use case to have a 2.4GHz-only option for configuring WiFi HA devices. @eero - show me I'm wrong and I'll gladly eat crow here...

REVIEW TITLE: Decent connectivity (I guess), but ... DON'T BUY THIS IF...

1-You have Wi-Fi based home automation devices that run on 2.4GHz only (i.e. almost everything sold on Amazon)
2-You are expecting a user interface commensurate with the $500 price tag
3-You have ever used a router's admin interface to do anything other than reboot or set the SSID
4-You think someday you might need/want to use a router's admin interface to do anything other than reboot or set the SSID

WOW...I was soooo excited to unbox my new Eero Pro setup last night, and 14 hours later I can only describe my emotional state as a sickening combination of stunned, heartbroken, crestfallen, and frustrated.

While the signal strength, coverage, and performance seems to be fine (as best I can tell in this short period of time), I'm sad to say that doesn't even matter.  The administrative controls on the device are so limiting that the product is functionally unusable (at least for my--fairly straightforward--needs).

After getting the network set up and getting most of the devices on my network connected, I began to work on connecting my 15 or so WiFi-based home automation devices.  My devices (like most such devices sold on Amazon and elsewhere) must connect to a 2.4GHz network (not 5GHz).  UNLIKE EVERY WI-FI ROUTER I'VE KNOWN FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS, Eero does not provide the administrative functionality to either turn off 5GHz (temporarily for device setup), or to give %GHz a different SSID name than 2.4Gz.  Consequently, my home automation devices cannot be set up... UNLESS...(wait for it)...you call tech support and have them remotely disable 5GHz temporarily.  Crazy, right?  Ready for this? By policy tech support must remain on the phone with you if 5GHz is turned off, so you have to stay on the phone with tech support for the duration of your home automation device set-up process, the pain of which is exacerbated if you're using the very same phone to talk and configure your devices.

While the idea of packing this thing back up, returning it, and buying and installing another WiFi router is incredibly painful, I think that's what I'm going to do.

Beyond the specifics of my current need, I'm simply stunned that a device targeted at the high end of the home WiFi market, would have such basic-level functionality. Maybe I'm just not the right buyer, but I can't be alone.  If any of the items on the list above is or could be you, then STAY AWAY FROM THIS THING!

Signed,
Bummed Beyond Belief

Sorry you have had such a bad experience with eero. I have lots of 2.4GHz only devices that I have connected successfully to my network without involving eero support. I had one device that struggled, but I did the trick of initially setting it up far enough away from an eero unit that it could essentially only see the 2.4GHz signal and then after it was configured, moved it to where I wanted it.
