Does each individual Eero in a mesh network act as a router in processing data?

Hope this makes sense, but I was wondering if each individual eero processes data, for example file transmissions between an NAS and a computer, independent of the gateway eero, for devices connected to that satellite eero?  I have LOTS of devices and in my case, I have a wirelessly meshed eero Pro system with three eeros, and on one of the satellite eeros I have both an iMac and a QNAP NAS hardwired (ethernet connected) to that satellite eero via a switch.  I observed amazingly fast transfer speeds when transferring large amounts of files from the iMac to the NAS, over 100 Mb/s (this is a single bay TS-128A with a conventional NAS hard drive).  I have never seen transfer speeds like this where the devices both weren't connected directly to the gateway router via ethernet with other systems I have used.  So, it appears the file transfers are direct and not routing through the gateway eero - does that make sense?  In other router setups I had, seemed like everything was slowed down because all data routed through the main router.
