Cloudflare Privacy DNS 1.1.1.1

So, I configured Eero via the app to use a custom DNS, rebooted the router and now all my devices have 1.1.1.1 as their DNS automatically. I’m pretty happy how easy and painless it is to do this. How does Cloudflare make money?

Cloudflare makes money by offering a number of paid services; their primary one being their Content Delivery Network service (https://www.cloudflare.com/cdn/)

To any eero Plus subscribers: you can’t configure custom DNS servers like this. eero Plus uses Zscaler’s service so it requires you to use their DNS servers in order to route your device’s requests through them.

cMoo92 Pretty sure eero plus doesn’t need a particular dns. I had to turn off all the eero plus features to switch to a new dns, then turned the plus features back on.

My devices are using the 1.1.1.1 dns.

When eero Plus is enabled, it will switch your network’s default/custom DNS to one that enables the services for advanced network security and content filtering to work. For this reason, it isn’t possible to use a separate DNS when using eero Plus.

Jeff C. Thanks for th update Jeff. You’ve got iOS tricked out pretty well then. Must be behind the scenes on the eero devices then? 👍

lwdupont this is just because your device hasn’t requested a DHCP lease update since you turned back on eero Plus. Next time it asks eero to refresh it’s DHCP lease, the DNS servers will change.

cMoo92 Are you sure about that? I have eero Plus enabled, have refreshed my DHCP lease and waited multiple days, and nslookup is still reporting 1.1.1.1 as my DNS server.

When using eero Plus, can anyone confirm that nslookup will report the Zscaler DNS? Or does that happen behind the scenes?

yoshjosh Mine hasn't changed to a different ip.. I suspect if that's true, they are doing the switch internally in the OS on the Eero device. And my Eero plus is working great :)

lwdupont That sounds like what happens. See this reply from Jeff C on another thread: https://community.eero.com/r/63gqx5 .

I'm not seeing a way to specify the ipv6 DNS settings for 1.1.1.1. As per https://1.1.1.1/#setup-instructions the ipv6 settings should be 2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001. As a result my various computers are seeing the cached ISP ipv6 DNS servers.

Am I missing a setting here? The ipv6 DNS servers were displayed under the ISP DNS (default) settings. Thanks.

moderation at this time, it isn't possible to change the IPv6 DNS. However, this is something we plan to release.
