Advice on adding eero pro 6 to network with dell firewall

Hi all,

installing a new set of eero pro 6 pods in my in-laws house. They have a bit of an elaborate setup for their home/business office. They have a Comcast business combo router that connects to a dell sonicwall soho firewall which then goes to a larger unmanaged netgear switch. This was setup by a local IT company and the firewall needs to remain in place as it’s set as their gateway ip (192.168.50.1) and it seems their desktop machines are manually configured with IPs in the 192.168.50.x range (no dhcp). My in-laws are also a bit squeamish around the idea of removing the firewall as they had a ransomware attack in the past. I’ve successfully put the router in bridge mode, removed the dell firewall and enabled dhcp configuration in their Ethernet-connected workstations. But I’m keen to keep the firewall in place and their configuration in place as much as possible. Is it possible for me to configure it with: combo modem/router -> firewall -> eero -> switch? Any possible issues with this in terms of leaving the existing setup intact? Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • For anybody that stumbles on this, solution at least for me ended up being simple. I left the modem -> firewall -> switch setup in place and simply attached the eero gateway from one of the auxiliary Ethernet ports on the firewall. It just worked from there, didn’t need to put the modem in bridge mode or anything. I did disable WiFi from the modem’s admin to reduce interference. Seems that the Eero was smart enough to figure out how to get an IP via the firewall and route traffic to/from connected devices.
