Set up Eero 6 with no mobile data connection

I have a Talktalk WiFi hub (which I believe is both a modem and router) and have just had FTTP 150 installed. I have no mobile signal here. The Openreach engineer couldn't get the Eero 6 (which came free with the upgrade) to work so he connected the newly installed modem to the WAN port on the Talktalk WiFi hub and that works fine - but it is not using the Eero 6 which I thought was the main purpose of the upgrade.

Can anyone tell me how I can replace the old Talktalk WiFi hub with the new Eero 6 in my circumstances?

  • Connect your phone to the WiFi on the TalkTalk hub, connect your eero to the hub, and then setup your eero network that way (both your phone and the eero should have internet access this way). After that’s done, disconnect your Hub, and connect your eero to the modem. Power cycle your modem and and then you should be good to go! You may need to power cycle the eero node after power cycling the modem.

  • Thanks for such a quick answer. A couple of supplementary questions. When you say 'power cycle' do you mean turn it off for a few minutes then turn it back on? And when you say 'connect your eero to the hub' do I just plug it into a spare ethernet port and do I have to disable WiFi on the hub first?

1st question: yes, powercycle just means unplugging the power and plugging back in. Usually just waiting about 10-30 seconds (doesn’t need to be several minutes).

2nd question: yes, plug the eero into one of the available Ethernet ports on the hub. And you’ll have to leave the WiFi enabled on the hub while you setup the eero, since I think your mobile device needs the WiFi for connectivity through the eero app for initial configuration. Once your eero is setup, then you can should be able to completely disconnect your Hub.

  • Thanks so much for this. Worked perfectly. Perhaps TalkTalk should amend their literature to cater for people like me who have no mobile data connection where they live.
