Request: Dynamic DNS Support

Support for a few basic DynDNS services (DynDNS, NoIp, etc) would be greatly appreciated for remote access.

Currently I'm having to run a control applet/service on my local PC to keep everything up-to-date (and it generally works); however being able to do it on the router would be ideal.

Much thanks.

  • I would also like to see this feature.

I use dnsomatic.com for my dynamic DNS so that I can update multiple dynamic dns providers & openDNS with a single configuration.

This is a very useful feature to have within the router/firewall itself.

  • Can someone from eero please provide an update?  I just set up my system, but will likely need to return for another mesh solution that includes this feature.  Is this something that you are implementing soon, or do the multiple requests in this thread not justify this capability?

  • Eeero time to report on this matter. Please update.

  • Hi everyone —

Thanks for your continued feedback and interest in this feature. At this time, we don't have any updates to share. It is still something that continues to be under consideration, and as soon as I have more to share, I'll update this thread.

Thanks again for your feedback and contributions.

  • Just as an FYI for those that are looking for this feature, I've been running this on my Synology NAS (and I looked at my QNAP and Asustor NAS units and they also support DDNS) and it's rock solid and simple reporting.

BUT if you don't have a NAS I have deployed a bunch of these for friends lately (GL.iNet GL-MT300N) which Amazon now has on sale for $17 shipped.  Why this?  It not only supports OpenWRT but it comes with OpenWRT pre-installed.  OpenWRT supports a large number of DDNS providers right off the bat (including Dynu and Dnsomatic my two goto for DDNS) but you can customize if yours is not on the list.

You just disable the Wifi and all other superfluous features (routing, NAT, DHCP, etc...), setup on your network and now you have DDNS on a low power set it and forget it box.

Nnyan you can see the list here: https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/ddns.client

Also don't bother with the V2, you don't need it but you can spend the few extra bucks if you want to or will be using this for a few things

losingnow  Even better it doesn't need anything but a network connection.  So you can just connect it to your switch or whatever you are using for extra network ports (if you have one) or if you don't have a switch I would connect it to the Eero's 2nd port.  When you disable the services on the gl.inet all its doing is going out to your selected DDNS service on a regular basis or when it detects an IP change.

Just think of this as a wired mini-pc that is just running a DDNS client updater program (script in this case).

  • I also meant to say that that is just one suggestion (relatively easy one since openwrt is already installed and has a gui).  you can use any number of cheap devices (and depending on how technical you are and willing to tackle a mini-me project).  I've been playing with the Onion Omega2 (under $25 with the Ethernet dock).  Those can do DDNS following these instructions:  http://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/installing-the-linux-dynamic-update-client/

Orange Pi Zero is very nice too, I know friends that have flashed PogoPlug Mobiles and ZBT-WE1626  from china are decent for this kind of thing.

  • OK so it has been a YEAR and still no support for Dynamic DNS???  We have been using the eero for a few months now and its the holidays.  Thought I would take the time to re-setup my access from the outside works only to find I have none???  I now need to repackage the units and take them back.  This is seriously disappointing.    This should have been a basic feature for this router.  People access their HOMES from remote locations and I cannot with eero??

  • I just bought the Eero Pro setup and the lack of ddns was very disappointing. After reading the response from Eero and the obvious lack of desire to make customers happy, I'll return this with a smile on my face knowing my money will be spent elsewhere with a company that cares about it's customers.

Spending almost $500 and missing basic features that $40 routers have is unacceptable, especially when paired with the attitude they have. They must be too busy counting the money they are making instead of trying to improve the product in any meaningful way.

  • It truly baffles the imagination.  My only guess is they're looking to bundle DDNS functionality into their Eero+ service and try billing for it.

When that happens I'm definitely moving on and never looking back (which is a shame, because I really liked their hardware once and previously recommended it to family, friends and coworkers).  Not anymore.

If I could do it all over again: I'd picked a different mesh solution (Samsung, Google, Netgear).

  • I just bought and set up the eero and while I love the devices and the setup, I'm quite disappointed that I can't set up my phone system. My old Netgear router has it.

Any eta on when this will be available?

do you mean a public static IP?  You can set up your Eero network with a static IP from your ISP during the initial setup (I think it was when it asks you to unplug your current modem/router).  You should then be able to assign one of your extra public IPs to your VoIP.

  • I wasn't looking for technical advice. I know what I'm doing and what I need. I don't have a static I from my provider. I need dyndns to work. Thank you.

ariley   Public forums are places for public input.  You may not have noticed but people try to help each other. How about you take a chill pill when someone is just trying to help.  As has been talked about they don't have this feature and it's not in the works.  So it's look for an alternative or live with it and hope.

Nnyan Thank you for the condescending response. As I said, I was just hoping this feature will be available since, as others pointed out, it's available in other wifi routers at lower price points.

Why do men always think women need technical advice as opposed to information? And when I reiterate that I actually just needed information you feel the need to tell me to take a chill pill.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and I'm sorry to hear the issue you are currently experiencing with getting your phone connected. At this time, we don't have any updates to share regarding DDNS.

If there is anything our support team can do to assist, possibly with a workaround they'd know of for similar cases in the past, we'd be happy to assist. Feel free to give us a call at 1-877-659-2347 or email us at support@eero.com and a member of our team will get back to you ASAP.

As for the direction of this thread — this community is designed to be a positive space for others to share their feedback as well as provide help. All posts should adhere to our community guidelines. While I know you are offering your assistance  Nnyan , the suggestion of taking a chill pill is not conducive to a positive interaction.

  • I've been using a ddns script on my Ubuntu home server to keep this function updated for what about two years now?  Whenever I got these damned eeros.

    https://www.noip.com/support/knowledgebase/installing-the-linux-dynamic-update-client-on-ubuntu/

Would much prefer to have it on the router side of the house.

  • I’m hoping with the recent changes at Eero, they’ll reconsider features that are standard at much lower price points, especially now that everyone has very solid mesh offerings.

The idea of a a subscription service to pay my router manufacturer is pretty off-putting. I would consider it, if it offered best-in-class features. But we don’t even have the bare essentials.

  • I too use DynDns to access my home automation system and security cameras. I was very surprised to find that Eero doesn't have it built in. Every other router system I have used does have it built in. I wish Eero would add that soon!

  • Dynamic DNS is a feature that a lot of people (me included) depend on not only for remote access, but also for home security systems, home automation, etc. It should be moved up the priority list for future software updates.

  • I am quite disappointed that this feature is not available. To the point that I am regretting purchasing eero. I can not recommend eero to anyone.

  • I apologise if my post violated posting guidelines and if I offended anyone.  I understand how frustrating it is to not have a feature you require.  But I have had used 34 routers (just broke out my storage box and counted) and 1.  Not all DDNS features worked well or consistently 2.  Many had limits on which providers the feature would work with.  It is your choice to do whatever you want as a consumer.  I myself reluctantly moved away from Eero and I'm quite happy with Ubiquity Unifi, but it wasn't an easy choice as Eero is a great product and you have choices with DDNS.

  • I too am needing the DDNS service function to be added to the eero product line.

Most if not all new router systems come with the DDNS function.

eero wifi systems    = VERY FAST

    eero DDNS support = FAIL

  • Agree this should be added.  I was shocked when I learned it wasn't available.  Fortunately I have a tower that is always on so am using that.

  • Need this feature (ddns) to access my cameras as I don't have a static IP from my internet provider. I personally use a custom ddns freemyip.com

  • +1 this is feature that is definitely needed on Eero. A $500 product should support this out of the box. Make this happen!

  • I agree 100%. To access my security system when I'm away from homeI run an app on my laptop to keep my address current. But this is not a good solution. Please consider adding DDNS support.

  • I would add my vote to implement this feature. DDNS does more than just allow remote access. It can be used to facilitate smart home features and monitor security systems. Some vendors require a static IP or DNS name to work.
