Questions before I purchase eero system


I am new to this community and haven't purchased an eero system yet, as had a few queries I was hoping to get help with before I make the plunge.

Just to start, I am based in the UK. I have a Virgin Media router and connected to that I have an ethernet cable linked to another router, that I've set up as a wireless access point and also in another part of the house, I have a powerline adaptor going to the main router.

My questions are, if I get the 3 pack system, I obviously need to connect one to the main router to start acting as the router. Can I then replace the secondary router, that's set up as a WAP with another eero, as in a straight swap via the ethernet or do I need to plug in the eero into that WAP via ethernet. Thirdly, can I connect the 3rd eero to the powerline adaptor via ethernet?

I hope that makes sense. I am hoping with my set up and using ethernet cable and powerline to the main router, will make it an easy set up.

Also, I have some technical knowledge but am by no means an expert or no way near, so any help in layman's terms would be appreciated :) Thanks

    We appreciate your interest in eero and we'd be happy to answer any questions you have. Yes, you first need to connect an eero directly to your Virgin Media router as the "Gateway" eero. From there, you'll want to disconnect the secondary router you're using as a WAP and connect a secondary eero. (Be sure that the ethernet cable is connecting to the gateway eero and not the upstream router.)

    Since your powerline adapter is connecting directly to the Virgin Media router, you won't want to connect your third eero there. This is going to cause you to have two eeros "fighting" for the gateway position on your network, which can cause stability issues. If you want your third eero hardwired, the best option would be to either connect it to your second eero, or look into purchasing an ethernet switch and connecting it to your gateway eero, and then connecting both your second and third eero there.

  • Hi Kora (eero Support) many thanks for your response and assistance. I actually got the eero system yesterday and managed to set it up, had a few teething issues with my many connected devices but all seems to be working fine and have great wifi around the house now, really like the system!

  • Hi Kora (eero Support) I do seem to be having one major issue since I set up the eero. My TV keeps dropping signal, so freezing while streaming and also keeps dropping internet connection (a message keeps popping up to say this), which is quite frustrating while trying to watch something, as it's happening a lot.

    I have tried connecting wirelessly to both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks and have also tried directly connecting the TV using an ethernet cable via a switch that is connected to the Gateway eero. I have also tried restarting the Gateway eero but the issue still persists. 

    The TV is only a few metres from the Gateway and I never experienced any issues prior both either using wireless or ethernet, so I am at a loss as to why this keeps happening with the eero and not sure what else I can do. The TV I have is a Panasonic TX50GX800B.

    Any assistance would be appreciated, thanks.

      Kora (eero Support) sorry, just to add to the above, after doing a bit more testing, I don't think it's actually the TV that has the issue, it's my Sky Q box (FYI - I am in the UK). It's when I am using apps via the Sky Q box, like Disney+ that I am having the issues. 

      I have tried watching streaming directly through the TV and that seems to work fine, I only get the freezing issue when streaming using the Sky Q box. The Sky box is connected via an ethernet cable to the switch that is connected to the Gateway.

  • Had three airport extremes (tower),wired, one on each floor of the house. It mostly works but we often have unexplained slowdowns in WiFi that a device (either the phone, tablet or all AP) solve. One of the AP is the main DHCP and gateway. The cable modem is not doing anything but providing internet access, I guess that means bridge mode is off?. The WiFi signal is mostly strong everywhere but I’d say it’s only 95% stable.

    The gateway is configured for some static DHCP leases and some port forwarding, which are essential to some of the things I do with my Synology NAS.

    We have quite a lot of devices, some wired and probably twenty or so wireless.

    Do you think I’ll see an improvement over my existing? I am interested in E+ since I already pay $60a year for 1p.

    I am thinking about a 2nd generation 3 squares Eero system. House is 2800sq ft on 3 floors.
