Encrypted DNS / Secure DNS
My ISP intercepts my DNS queries, it seems standard practice on many Australian ISPs. This causes certain software to fail, as such I've had to spin up a local AdGuard Home server and direct traffic to that.
There are several protocols available, in order from oldest to newest:
- DNSCrypt
- DNS over TLS
- DNS over HTTPS
- DNS over QUIC
Currently, these local encrypted DNS servers are suitable workarounds:
- Cloudflare Warp
- DNSCrypt
- AdGuard Home
- AdGuard for Mac / iOS
- Pi Hole
- NextDNS for Mac / iOS
I understand though that as Eero Secure is essentially just a streamlined and integrated AdGuard Home, it would be advantageous for Eero's profits to keep users in the Eero Secure ecosystem to not discover AdGuard Home and using that as a free alternative. So incorporating encrypted/secure DNS natively would assist with preventing discovery and use of alternatives.

It's interesting that in 2023, a feature critical to customer security and privacy is behind a $100 paywall.
I currently recommend Eero to friends and family as they work well with little to no fuss -- but if features that can be implemented with free, open source software are going to be locked behind a paywall, the eero 6 generation will be the last I use.
