Name service

It can be helpful to be able to address a host on the network using its name and not only IP.

for example I have a NAS drive on the network and i can see it by its name, however I cannot use the name in http or ftp connections to it. I can only use IP address.

  • Yes!  Dnsmasq, used by many other products (from old Linksys to modern Ubiquiti) does this: offers dhcp and a dns cache, and populates a local zone (both A, PTR, plus ipv6) from the responses it gives.
