Feature Request: Bandwidth Monitor

With Comcast and others adding bandwidth caps id love to get internal alerts since Comcast numbers are so out of whack.

  • Have switched over to the Asus rt-ax88u with RMerlin firmware. Covers my whole house, and has per-client and per-app data traffic statistics while supporting gigabit internet. Also has a nice system log, and I can turn off the 2.4GHz. wireless radio. Solid and stable, with pretty much all the features that were lacking in the eero. Still have the eero, but it's moved to backup position for the time being :-).

MrDoh that’s quite the wifi router. How about a more pedestrian version? I had an ASUS rt-66 back in the day with Merlin firmware, what’s something cheaper but still able to get all the device tracking info from?

  • Google WiFi has this feature. See https://www.howtogeek.com/297012/how-to-view-your-networks-data-usage-on-google-wi-fi/. People in my community are talking about switching to Google WiFi because they don't know which devices are using all the data and they're about to get cut off due to Comcast's 1TB per month limit, which have been waived during the last few months because of the pandemic, but that's about to expire.

Referenceman yeah I finally bought the Google Nest Wifi setup. Just the router and one satellite. It works perfect and I can see what’s housing bandwidth by Real-time, 1 day, 7 days, 30 days.

I’ll be selling my Orbi mesh wifi for whatever I can get on FB

  • This is a basic requirement for any router.  Blew past 500GB cap in a couple of weeks.  With a device usage/bandwidth monitor that shows device usage over time I'd be able to fix this.  I see this feature request has been under consideration for 3 years!  Sounds like user satisfaction doesn't mean much to eero. Time to switch to a faster moving competitor like google nest wifi.

  • Same as everyone else. I was in love with my eero+ until I realized I am hitting my ISP's limit due to WFH. Please listen to your users and add this feature asap. Can't believe it's been 3 years and not a single basic solution is given here.

  • Just had this message from eero support "...eero is specifically designed to not keep track of what your devices do on the internet. As such we do not keep records of how much bandwidth your devices use like other wireless routers do..." - so if there is work being done on this feature then sounds like the rest of the company doesn't know about it, as they're saying it'll never be possible to do.

YetAnotherUserName Disappointing. Sounds like a convenient cop out to what they have said in the past. They track sites they block for us and send us weekly reports. Surely they could let users opt in to getting reports on data used, that is so much less sensitive.

  • Please add the per device bandwidth metering, and fix the existing regressions.  As an engineer who will continue to work remote in this pandemic while being billed by the GB, I need usage meters per device.

  • So I finally did a workaround, using $$$ worth of hardware and software that I have in my home lab for work.

    Yay.

I mean it works fine for me but the average consumer won’t have anything like my setup.

This is not that hard...truly. I love my Eeros but this is kindergarten level complexity.

sathsy I have software my company sells, including real time packet capture, so I grouped my Eeros and mirror my main 16-port switch ports.

That 'catches' the traffic, and I can see by IP, by app, by port/protocol, etc. and run reports against it.

This would cost the consumer over $10K, so that's why I said 'not for the average consumer' - I get toys for free because of the job!

I also create SNMP device drivers on occasion, so Eero COULD do this in 2-3 days at most.

I work in network infrastructure. I can get my hands on a lot of Cisco3750 24/48p switches. Maybe even 3850s as we transition to the 9300s. Could you hit me up with your setup/config?
Id love to get this type of information that eero doesn’t provide.
I’m sure I could figure it out, but I’d love to get a working config to work off of!

  • Just signed up to say that I, too, am sorely missing this feature, especially now that everyone is working/schooling from home. I'm just far enough outside of town that my only viable Internet option is DSL (cue sad violins), and when my very slow connection chokes and my Teams call goes to crap, I need to know what's competing for bandwidth, right now. So frustrating that it's not an option!

The eero app used to show current usage on the device list, without having to hunt through devices individually, and while that's not even close to what a bandwidth monitoring feature could and should be, it was far better than the current situation.

I can't imagine eero management or their new(-ish) corporate overlords are happy to see their own customers openly discussing the merits of their competitors, on their own forums, on a thread that's still open after 3+ years because they can't or won't at least re-introduce a feature that they already used to have. It's just crazy!

If I wasn't already $1000 into eero (six of the originals), I'd probably switch. I certainly won't spend another penny on them, nor recommend them to anyone else, until this is addressed.

Also to see the requests where made years ago and it’s only a consideration? Dev team needs to take a harder look at the times.. as people better utilize increased speeds with WiFi 6, the feature will be an even bigger necessity.. wow   Orbi has it, just saying

komocode Actually, they don't "currently" have one available. However, I wasn't aware of their recent announcement. I "just" upgraded to the Asus XT8 wi-fi 6 mesh. It has all the reporting I want, but the detailed traffic reports can only be seen from a desktop web browser. Hmm.... This sounds intriguing as my eero pro system has been ROCK SOLID stable for over 2 years. Incredible stability actually. But the reporting thing bugged me and their lack of a Wi-Fi 6 system bugged me. But now that the hardware will be addressed, I'm wondering if a hardware upgrade was necessary to enable traffic monitoring? I only have a few days left that I can return the XT8. What to do, what to do?

I have until October 21st to return my Orbi ax6000.  Trying to do as much research as possible but info is limited so far.  Can’t find an actual spec sheet.. the individual traffic reporting is cool, but an actual monthly total monitoring would be the icing on the cake.  Who wants to sit with a calculator and add up 50 devices worth of traffic.  I have the ability now with the Orbi and it’s hard to turn away from after having it

Merf It's not just the missing feature that's so troubling.  It's the fact that they've acknowledged on this forum that this an important customer request over two years ago, but still have made no progress towards addressing it, and no longer even update the forums on status.  It really shows a lack of care on their part towards their customers/community.  I'd love to be able to recommend eero, but my advise to anyone who asks is to stay away and look at other solutions.

arm000 Actually, it's over 3 years and maybe near 4. However, I'm kinda giving them a pass because I know prior to the Amazon sale, it was speculated they were in financial trouble. That and maybe there were hardware limitations that prevented traffic monitoring that they didn't want to publicly admit. I don't know I'm just guessing. But with this rehearse there is no excuse. I think I'm gonna return my Asus, buy the eero and see because the stability of the eero is HUGE for me. If they haven't addressed I'll re-purchase the Asus.

arm000 I should add that I've been running the Asus for a little over a week. This far it's performed very well and I am experiencing slightly faster speeds overall. We typically run between 45 and 55 wifi connected clients consistently. However, I have read others having issues with dropped clients and we've experienced one that was cured only via a system reboot. That is a "little" concerning as in over 2 years we've never experienced a dropped client with the eero.

It seems the hardware is there if the app has the capability of tracking individual usage.  I mean I’m no wizard but it Seems like a coding issue to just simply have it automatically tallied daily, weekly and at the end of the month.

Merf However, the data must be stored somewhere. If on the router, there has to be memory/storage available for the data to be stored. Maybe previous versions didn't have space allocated in hardware to store traffic data? Of course, I'm just speculating. But regardless, with this latest release there is no excuse. They know that users want/need this feature. Therefore, if they ignore that obvious need with their latest design, that tells us a lot.

  • So they've been looking at this for three year now.

I'm expecting it'll have support for VR headsets and you'll be able to swoop around three dimensional representations of the data - they must be adding all these features to it otherwise they would have either done it by now, or admitted that it's never going to happen.

  • Signed up specifically to add my voice to this feature. Even having a estimate of the traffic used per device (not separating per protocol or website ) would be better than what we have.

Also; could we move the active data usage to the device list? It isn't very useful when attempting to gather a snapshot.

    Like
  • Also, don’t forget that besides the regression with functionality in determining what’s hogging the active bandwidth, having a guest network doesn’t even tell you what the active devices are using at all. TF would I want a guest network that gives me less detail on device use than my regular network? I know I don’t want them accessing my network devices but I can imagine all admins would want MORE info not less.

Truly mental this hasn’t been properly addressed. Over 3 years of active requests putting it at the top of wants and it’s actually worse now. And now I pay a monthly to find out jack about what’s happening on my network in any meaningful way. Glad “some phishing” has been blocked. Of course there’s no real info on that either.

  • Just joined to upvote this. It's been said, but this is an absolutely essential feature. I'm on cricket with a 100gb cap (I know, its truly terrible) so if we don't get this I really will have to switch to a different system. I just assumed eero would have it since its a basic feature with others. I actually was planning to go the Google nest direction but the better price on eero swayed me and I have been thrilled with my decision until I realized this lack of feature. Please make it happen eero!

  • In hopes of any developer actually seeing this, I will add some context to why this is important for me.

With work-from-home and virtual-school for my kids; we are all voiping most of the day. This is on top of the added streaming time from stay at home orders from everyone in the family.

To add insult to injury; increasing your bandwidth to deal with everyone streaming calls and entertainment all the time exacerbates the cap issue. These services often will negotiate to a better quality, thus increasing data usage and exhausting our data limit. I attempt to manually police this via settings the best I can but it doesn't always happen.

Often there is a device that is discarded left streaming from someone that is wasting bandwidth. I only notice if I happen to walk into the room and hear / see it.

With no tools available to help me efficiently combat this; I am left with no other option than to roll some portion of any overage into the over all cost of maintaining the eero system.

I love the ease of use of the eero system, but I can't justify increase cost because of the company's apparent philosophical position on this issue. Practically speaking this feature is sorely needed to do the real world implications of data usage caps and an inability to limit device bandwidth in anyway.

  • I’m sorry bu eero will never be able to do it. With their current platform So stop asking.. their current systems do not have the proper hardware (memory storage) and processing power required. You need to be able to filter and measure TCP traffic . Not possible. Look for a router that will support DD-WRT.. (Google it or DuckDuck Go It) this software will allow you to monitor everything from data usage to who is using your data. Good Luck!

jimdenver oh, and stop asking is the WORSE thing to do. There are only 2 ways to pressure a company. Feedback and/or stop using/don't buy their product. If you stop using/don't buy their product they don't know why. Feedback is critical let a company know why they lost you. If enough do it then they face dire consequences if they don't act.

YetAnotherUserName That's a horrible business strategy IMO. This is not some obscure request. This is critical and will grow in criticality over time. So critical, it will be worth switching systems just to obtain it. New purchasers will assume its there and be dismayed when they discover its not. If not addressed, it will become a marketing advantage to eero's competitors. Lastly, the oodles of otherwise satisfied eero customers who left or will leave the platform because of this won't be silent. In YouTube reviews and other avenues they'll repeatedly point out this lack. IMO, it'll be much better for eero to be open and honest and get out in front of this.

jimdenver Disagree 100%, the hardware is already counting everything, it must to even function as a router, there's more than enough cpu / memory to increment counters this is definitely not a hardware issue or a political data ownership issues, it's purely a poor-engineering issue. I've worked on hardware so much less powerful than this before, and in software, kernel extensions, networking, etc and believe me its easy and its mostly already done in the kernel anyways it's just not exposed or perhaps aggregated in the windows a human might like. They just need to send the data in their regular data pushes to api.eero.com, and then build the widgets in the UI to display them. Stupid simple. In fact, things like DDWRT are proof of how simple it is, you can actually write an entirely open source full router in open source and have it work with someone else's hardware! Imagine how easy it is when you're already a software developer at eero with full src control? No, this is just really bad mgmt and engineering debt on their part. All the engineers were let go or everyone is too junior or the mgmt is too concerned over google integrations to pay attention to customers, or the product is being deprecated or they have no testing platform or Barbara, the only one who deals with metrics in the kernel is on holiday to Brazil for 9 mos... it'll be something like one of those.

Mgreer316 Because the developer's responses in reddit are oriented towards solving problems and explaining how things work. This forum is for suggesting new features, which isn't exactly the same thing :-). Just go to the eero subreddit and ask your questions...if they're in the person in question's bailiwick, you'll get a good answer.

jimdenver I guess you were wrong. They did do (it took long enough) and they did an excellent job of executing it. I've got it on my 2.5 year old 2nd gen eero pro system (currently Android only but iOS to come within a week or 2). It's a comprehensive implementation and is exactly what we've been asking for for years. I suggest that unless you know something for an absolute fact that you not make definitive statements regardless of what somebody else says. The user base asked and asked and asked and finally they delivered. If feedback is consistent from enough people then things can happen. And that's why you don't quit asking.

  • Well, I had hopes but it looks like it didn't happen. I had hoped that we'd see some type of bandwidth monitoring with the new eero Pro 6. But it doesn't appear to have been addressed. I don't understand eero. This request was out way before design of their latest offering was ever started. Yet knowing this, they proceeded to engineer, design, develop, and produce a product without this critical functionality. They've got to believe this isn't important. Well, I'm just going to repurchase the Asus Zenwifi XT8 and be done with eero. Too bad because I really loved the reliability and design of their system. But if they don't care to listen, then I don't care to persist in supporting their business.

  • Now I'm confused. I asked this question on Amazon and one guy said, "No, it's not there", but another guy said, "Yes, it is there.". This is what he wrote:

"Yes, it does. Probably with the software update. It's all marked "New" on my app. At the bottom of the android screen is a spiky line. Tap and the data usage will be exposed. It is staggeringly complete. Every device has down and up listed. And there are totals for the network."

Can somebody confirm this? Also, my question made it clear that I was after data over a time period (day/week/month), not a real time measurement. I don't know if he understood that or not.
