Feature Request: Bandwidth Monitor

With Comcast and others adding bandwidth caps id love to get internal alerts since Comcast numbers are so out of whack.

  • I honestly don't know why this isn't a feature yet. Eero is now literally the ONLY mesh networking system that does NOT have a bandwidth monitor as part of the app, and there's no technical excuse for this, which is also considered a mandatory standard feature by the networking industry and FISMA (Federal Information Security Management Act) as of 2014.  I repeat, Eero is now the ONLY mesh networking system with NO bandwidth monitoring.

Sorry guys, but there really is no excuse for not having this, and no excuse for no IPv6 support either. Everyone else has that too.

  • Please add this ASAP. My internet provider has instigated a data cap of 1TB and I am consistently 1.5 to 2x over that.  I have no alternative ISP providers so I am stuck with Cox.  That means my internet price has more than doubled with $100 per month overage charges.  I really need to find the individual devices on my network that are hogging the data and the total data used by my network to confirm what the ISP says I am using.  If Eero doesn't add this I will be forced to try another system similar to Eero, even though I do like it.

John Alex None of those solve the problem as they are designed to monitor bandwidth on a single computer.  I have 20+ devices connected to my network and many of those devices don't support an app like these.  The reality is Eero needs to get off their butts and fix this.

imahawki 100% agree. This is very frustrating. I'm planning on getting a new system before the end of the year if there's no line of sight from EERO on adding this feature. With data caps and expensive overages becoming more and more the norm (thanks Comcast) it's a must have feature. There are a lot of competitive alternatives now. I took an expensive bet on EERO knowing it's a young company, but I can't stick with it if it can't offer this capability.

  • 100% need this. With Comcast's 1TB cap, and as someone who works from home, I need more tools and info surrounding my usage. For some reason, eero also doesn't work with apps like PeakHour 4. So either, add some support for that or give us more reporting tools.

Or has anyone found a good network monitor that monitors all usage across network with eero?

  • Comcast's claiming I'm somehow using twice as much bandwidth this month as the last month (and the 4 previous).  I'm currently 30GB over my 1TB cap... and I have ZERO explanation why.

I run my own business from home, and having this meter for me to look at would be a big help to argue my case against Comcast (I have no idea how I hit 30GB in 1 day), or at least, understand how its being used.

    Thank you!

alphex Its safe to say Eero doesn't give a shit what its customers want.  I'd say sell your Eero and buy something else.  Leave a 1-start review in the app store before you do.  Its the only thing that will have any impact on Eero.

alphex Same. I went for months and months without ever topping the 1TB mark, but the past 3 months, Comcast is saying I'm at the cap with a week left in each month. My usage certainly shouldn't have changed that much all of a sudden. Thanks to eero, I have no way to monitor it.

    • alphex @kellen Interesting! It was just last month (October) that I first broke the 1TB limit w/ Comcast (1.3TB), after averaging 400-600GB per month before that. It was so unexplained, I installed some monitoring software in my previous router (OpenWRT + Netgear router) to try and track usage. I used YAMon ( http://www.usage-monitoring.com/ ).

This month I've already used 740GB, and have no real explanation for it. I bought an Eero 2nd gen to see if perhaps something was amiss with my prev router, but now I'm on day 3, and the usage is still growing according to Comcast and I don't have a strong understanding of which device is doing this.

Before, it looked like my new iPhone 8+ was using 10-15GB per day (probably photos app? maybe Google Photos + iPhotos???) according to YAMon, but there were some days that had 130GB of "unexplained" usage that was measured at the router, and it wasn't coming from any device the router, or I, knew about.

TL;DR I too have seen a spike in bandwidth usage over the past month, and do not have an explanation. I was hoping Eero would have helped me zero-in on where my usage was going, but so far I've come up empty. I'm still on track to breach 1TB of bandwidth long before the end of the month. Gross.

chazlodian I'm glad I'm not the only one.

AT&T Fiber is coming to my neighborhood, and as soon as its avail I'll be exploring my options to move off of Comcast.

With that said,  Eero, can we please get this feature built?!?

      Like
    • alphex Since writing my last comment, my usage (according to Comcast) has jumped to 777GB inexplicably. I can only really account for ~10GB of usage, where another 27GB+ are simply a mystery. I've setup devices in a eero Family Profile that disallows network access overnight, but still my usage climbs without a real explanation.

I don't know if it's my iPhone 8+, but I cannot imaging what it would be downloading--all photos/videos are backed up, I don't stream movies/video on them, but do some on an iPad (few hours), but it's not outside my norm, and prior months I rarely broke 700GB for the entire month.

Really frustrating to not have this feature, and understand what is going on in my own network. I have one "free month" left from Comcast before they start charging $10/50GB over 1TB... I fear this feature request will not be available in that time.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you have any other connected devices that could be the culprit, such as a security camera? If so, is it always on? Those tend to use a lot of data:

Jeff C. OMG!  You know what would be useful?  If his FUCKING router told him which device it was!!!

    • Jeff C. Nope, no cameras. And again, the only *new* devices I have since I breached the 1TB usage was an iPhone 8+ and a new Google Pixel 2. But when I was tracking usage of those devices with my previous router (OpenWRT+YAMon), I saw the iPhone 8+ was using 10-15GB of download bandwidth per day (which is insanely high, but did not explain the 100GB+ of mystery usage on a few days last week).

I'm pretty stumped. 100GB+ of downloads in a single day feels like I should know what it may be, but I don't! And it happened two days in a row:

      11/10/2017: 130GB

11/11/2017: 157GB (37GB were from devices my router could identify individually, 120GB from bandwidth measured at the router)

      Very strange.

That is strange. I just updated my phone as well, and with 13 devices on my network and a few hours of content streaming each day, my Comcast app is reporting only 240GB used since November 1st.

I don't have any updates to share regarding this feature request, however, I'll be happy to continue to share this feedback with our team as we continue to explore future features for eero.

In the meantime, at least over the next couple days, I'd recommend checking in the eero app here and there to see if any devices are actively using a lot of data. Hopefully, that will point you to the culprit. You may also want to reach out to Comcast to see if they can provide you with a more granular data set of data usage by time, which can potentially tie it back to certain events on your network.

      Like
    • Jeff C. Thanks. When I spoke with Comcast on 11/13, they suggested I use their xFi router to get more granular detail on a per-device basis. It was on that day that I bought an Eero, instead :) I knew Eero did not have historical data usage (yet), but was hopeful it may give me enough info to figure out what was going on in my home. No such luck so far.

I do monitor the Eero app every so often, but am surprised it doesn't seem to show usage as high as I'd expect. For instance, streaming YouTube to a Chromecast (from my phone) does not show MB/s usage. Sometimes, the phone+chromecast both show up as "idle" while I'm streaming video. So, I haven't relied on eero for that kind of data as much as I was hoping to.

chazlodian  With video streaming, it really depends on when you check. Some video players will download the video in chunks, which means the active data usage wouldn't always reflect the video as you are watching it.

    • Jeff C. Right, but I was expecting from YouTube or Twitch, to see 1-2MBps usage for 1080p60fps... I haven't checked the app as much since the "live bandwidth meters" seemed lower than I would have otherwise expected. They may be fine, but I haven't given them as much attention since it didn't seem to solve my immediate issue of, "Oh, I see that device X is constantly downloading at 10Mbps right now, that is probably the issue."

  • I don't have any expectation that Eero will add this feature for existing customers.  It doesn't benefit them financially to spend the time to develop this feature unless they can create additional revenue from it.

It's reasonable to assume that IF this feature is added, it'll become part of the Eero PLUS subscription service.  Personally, I have no intention of paying a monthly service fee for my router.

My parents have asked me to install a better WiFi system in their home.  I'm considering giving them my Eeros and buying something else for myself.

Does anyone have recommendations on other mesh systems?  Preferably one with usage tracking? I'm currently looking at Google Wifi or Linksys Velop; But descriptions aren't clear if those options offer that feature.

Juggler I can confirm Google Wifi has bandwidth monitoring.  You can get instantaneous bandwidth usage or aggregate usage over a day, week, month, or 2 months.  I think it's absurd that Eero doesn't offer this.

Juggler It seems to me the benefit for eero is acquisition of new customers.  Increasing word of mouth that this basic feature is absent puts them at a competitive disadvantage.  I would certainly hesitate recommending this to a Comcast customer, and now that I have thought about it again, I went to amazon and downgraded my existing review two stars since this obviously is not even under active development after all this time, and merely passing along the comments to the product team is not going to cut it any more.  The first failure with these will likely make me buy a competitor's product unless I first decide to sell them used on ebay.

Rather than buy a 4th Eero unit - I'm going to order Google WiFi and try it out. If it works at advertised I'll (sadly) be bailing out of Eero (after a lot of $$ spent)

gilbert What I've done in the interim is put some devices on a "Family Profile" that blocks internet access overnight (11p-7a). The devices added to that list are things like Roku, Chromecast, a media server (Plex), etc. They are devices I *think* are potentially using up lots of my bandwidth when I'm not actively using the device--most likely the media server over the others, because I also have Steam on it, and it may update games overnight, etc.

I also manually block some devices from using the internet until I need to use them by finding them in the eero devices list, blocking it, and then unblocking it before usage.

While this is not a solution to "what is using all my bandwidth?", it has significantly reduced my overall monthly usage as reported by Comcast. I was using 40GB+ per day (according to comcast's usage graph) up until I put in the above "fix". Now I'm averaging 5-6GB per day. I've not had the time to debug much further than that, but it was at least somewhat helpful to figure out that some devices are going nuts and downloading lots of data when I wasn't expecting them to.

It's a hassle, but maybe it'll be useful for you

  • Just joined so I could comment on this thread.

i needed to see what a couple of devices had used over the last month, so opened the app and looked for the bandwidth details - fully expecting that they would be there, it’s basic functionality of a router after all.

Then had to start googling, looking at this message board, and resorting to eero support to convince me that it really was missing.

Too costly a system to replace for this feature but should I win a lottery then I will.

YetAnotherUserName I'll repeat that I highly recommend leaving a 1-star review in your app store.  Its really the only way to even possibly get any attention to this matter.  This is the most liked and most commented feature request and is a YEAR OLD.  Clearly Eero doesn't care what we want.

  • I'm on the cusp of buying something new.  Although, the Eero mesh wireless system has been working well otherwise, I just surpassed my Xfinity data cap again and am being charged for additional usage.  I don't like the lack of ability to verify their stats.

I'm considering buying 1 Google Wifi.  I can use that as the gateway device, with the Eeros providing the wireless mesh behind it (in bridge mode).   That should provide the stats, while retaining the Eero's wireless reliability.

  • I just had to dig up my old Asus RT-AC68U and place it in front of my Eeros in bridge mode so that I could have any sort of insight of the traffic on my network.  It is extremely disappointing that Eero has not implemented a feature available in most other consumer routers knowing that their customers have been asking for over a year.

  • Hi everyone,

Thanks for your continued contributions to this topic. We know this is a big request, and the use cases everyone has provided are great examples towards pushing this feature out. While I don't have an update to share today, I wanted to provide a bit of clarity:

As a company, we want to do a lot of different things. More specifically—awesome things that our customers really want. That is what we've provided this community for, and so far it has driven requested features like Hairpin NAT, reboot from app, device blocking, device activity, eero connection strength, placement guides, health checks, and many parental control features within Family Profiles and eero Plus.

This feature, given the interest and value it adds, is important to us. There are a lot of pieces involved, and most importantly, it needs to be accurate and scalable. But your feedback has been heard, and the right folks across the organization are thinking about it.

Thanks again, everyone. We appreciate your ongoing patience and feedback.

Jeff C.  Thanks for reply, but as a networking software engineer I can confirm this is not a big request, the statistics are already in the device, they're just not exposed. And it's not the first time statistics are exposed, which could be an engineering hurdle, so it's just a further exposure of some more data. Even just enabling snmp would let others trap the data and report on it.   Its a 1-week feature that's YEARS old.  people should definitely switch to Google, same performance, better feature velocity.

    • atrieger That is incorrect.  Landing the stats on a central device has been exceedingly hard.  You may want to talk to the lead developer on Reddit who has been working on it for Eero for years now.

    • txgunlover I swear to god you’ve been on this forum for years and provided almost no useful info or help. You’re exasperating. How about 1) the company responds here instead of us having to search Reddit and hope we find this info you speak of and 2) you just go away. You give the same pointless answers every time. Which are either: “It’s the device’s fault.” Even though the device existed before mesh. So, hear me out, maybe some type of alternative solution to the issue (which is not unique or rare) *is* on the creator of the mesh and not the device maker. Your refusal to consider it’s eero’s job to assist in this connectivity issue is maddening because while that may be a flaw in a device the entire purpose of mesh is internet connectivity whereas the device has another job to do. Jebus.

Or your other response, here for example, is *pushes up glasses* “well actually, it’s NOT that easy.” Cool. You don’t work at eero. Why are you even here

At a minimum, if the reason is that the excellent stability that eero provides is jeopardized by granting the ability to block a device from a specific one of the AP’s, then they should have that front and center and have an auto response when the request is posted (which is every week, multiple days a week). It can be a post titled “Ability to to connect to particular eero devices/switches/AP/hubs whatever technically correct or incorrect term you call it.” And then the body of the post can say “We cannot do this because it creates instability in the system and stability is more important to us. Call technical service if the device has a weak signal.”

Or for this repeat request, the post can be titled “Hey, we know you want to know which device is using the most internet.” Body of post: “Tough luck, kid. Also we fired all the eero employees that read this message board. So go ahead and return the system and buy another brand that does tell you what’s happening on your wifi system. What do you expect, a system that connects all your devices to the internet throughout the hose, actually helps upload and download all the internet traffic AND GIVE YOU THAT INFO on top of all of that??? Pure alchemy!”

Seriously you should leave. I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul. You’re the dude from Office Space. Not the cool one.

    • txgunlover That is incorrect.  Landing the stats on a central device is a known process.  What you mean is that doing it on how the eero was built is difficult, and because of design decisions made when the product was created they're not going to be able to do it.

YetAnotherUserName I bought a Google WiFi system.  I'll be honest that the signal strength between units doesn't seem as strong as it did with the Eeros.  (Same placement of 3 units).  However they are still providing full coverage and I have no complaints on speed.  I now have the ability to review 30 day (rolling) stats of device usage.  Like this:

I would have been tempted to place just 1 Google Wifi as the gateway device to assign IPs and track usage, however there isn't an option to turn the radio off, so the wireless signal would have been competing with the Eeros.

Juggler Did you replace the Eero devices with the Google device?  I may need to do something like this because we consistently go over our usage and in order to address the user of the data, we need to know who is using most of the data.  If Eero cannot provide the data, we will have to return our 3 Eeros and get something like Google instead.

sgreene I did. I replaced 3 Eero AC (1st Gen) with 3 Google Wifi devices.  I had recently been charged by Comcast for exceeding the 1TB limit.  As you can see from my screenshot above, I'm at 839GB for the last 30 days.  This helps me validate the amount of usage and where my usage stems.  Further down that list I see that my son's PC has consumed a majority of the data (not surprisingly).

I think I will re-purpose the Eeros at my parent's home, where usage stats are less important.

cabla With google WiFi you are not able to set specific dates for data aggregation.  It's running totals and you can choose between Real Time, 1 Day, 7 Days, 30 Days, or 60 Days.

So you would not be able to set it to your billing cycle or any specific monthly view.

  • I just used one of my Comcast overage grace months and am on track to go over again this month :(

This got me motivated enough to start thinking out-of-the-box for a solution for monthly data monitoring and attribution.

I think I have a potential solution to this problem. It is great that the Eero app has instantaneous data view. If only there were a way to sample the instantaneous data that the Eero app displays then we could come up with a "potentially" reasonable estimate of the bandwidth used by each device.

I grabbed some network data from the Eero app to the server and it looks pretty easy to reverse engineer. I think I can make an app that will sample each devices instantaneous bandwidth and then be able to aggregate it on a monthly basis or probably even project an SNMP endpoint for that data. This way one of the common tools already mentioned in this thread could be used.

There looks like there are a few GitHub projects that have already reverse engineer the protocol at least to some level so that might make this even easier to develop. My preferred language for this will be either NodeJS or more likely GoLang so it is easy to run on pretty much all the most common platforms. I will see if I can work up a quick prototype and share it on GitHub and then I will report back. I wish there was a pre-made Postman collection for this. Maybe I can build one of those at the same time.

    Wish me luck.
