Feature Request: Bandwidth Monitor

With Comcast and others adding bandwidth caps id love to get internal alerts since Comcast numbers are so out of whack.

    Hi everyone,

    Thanks for your continued contributions to this topic. We know this is a big request, and the use cases everyone has provided are great examples towards pushing this feature out. While I don't have an update to share today, I wanted to provide a bit of clarity:

    As a company, we want to do a lot of different things. More specifically—awesome things that our customers really want. That is what we've provided this community for, and so far it has driven requested features like Hairpin NAT, reboot from app, device blocking, device activity, eero connection strength, placement guides, health checks, and many parental control features within Family Profiles and eero Plus.

    This feature, given the interest and value it adds, is important to us. There are a lot of pieces involved, and most importantly, it needs to be accurate and scalable. But your feedback has been heard, and the right folks across the organization are thinking about it.

      Jeff C.  Thanks for reply, but as a networking software engineer I can confirm this is not a big request, the statistics are already in the device, they're just not exposed. And it's not the first time statistics are exposed, which could be an engineering hurdle, so it's just a further exposure of some more data. Even just enabling snmp would let others trap the data and report on it.   Its a 1-week feature that's YEARS old.  people should definitely switch to Google, same performance, better feature velocity.

      atrieger That is incorrect.  Landing the stats on a central device has been exceedingly hard.  You may want to talk to the lead developer on Reddit who has been working on it for Eero for years now.

      txgunlover I swear to god you’ve been on this forum for years and provided almost no useful info or help. You’re exasperating. How about 1) the company responds here instead of us having to search Reddit and hope we find this info you speak of and 2) you just go away. You give the same pointless answers every time. Which are either: “It’s the device’s fault.” Even though the device existed before mesh. So, hear me out, maybe some type of alternative solution to the issue (which is not unique or rare) *is* on the creator of the mesh and not the device maker. Your refusal to consider it’s eero’s job to assist in this connectivity issue is maddening because while that may be a flaw in a device the entire purpose of mesh is internet connectivity whereas the device has another job to do. Jebus.  

      Or your other response, here for example, is *pushes up glasses* “well actually, it’s NOT that easy.” Cool. You don’t work at eero. Why are you even here  

      At a minimum, if the reason is that the excellent stability that eero provides is jeopardized by granting the ability to block a device from a specific one of the AP’s, then they should have that front and center and have an auto response when the request is posted (which is every week, multiple days a week). It can be a post titled “Ability to to connect to particular eero devices/switches/AP/hubs whatever technically correct or incorrect term you call it.” And then the body of the post can say “We cannot do this because it creates instability in the system and stability is more important to us. Call technical service if the device has a weak signal.” 
       

      Or for this repeat request, the post can be titled “Hey, we know you want to know which device is using the most internet.” Body of post: “Tough luck, kid. Also we fired all the eero employees that read this message board. So go ahead and return the system and buy another brand that does tell you what’s happening on your wifi system. What do you expect, a system that connects all your devices to the internet throughout the hose, actually helps upload and download all the internet traffic AND GIVE YOU THAT INFO on top of all of that??? Pure alchemy!”

      txgunlover That is incorrect.  Landing the stats on a central device is a known process.  What you mean is that doing it on how the eero was built is difficult, and because of design decisions made when the product was created they're not going to be able to do it.

    I bought my eero 2-pack about a month ago. I used PeakHour3 on my Mac mini to monitor my previous router's (AirPort Extreme) total bandwidth. That software doesn't work with eero. I'd love to see a bandwidth monitor feature also.

      Jeff C. Looking at the screen shot you posted awhile ago, it shows "% of network activity" has that been removed in the 2.0 iOS app, or am I missing something?

      +1 to the total bandwidth that is being used across the network at any given time, plus total daily/weekly, or at least once a month tracking would be helpful.

    Jeff C. Just to be clear, while bandwidth statistics on individual devices is good, I'm hoping for a tool that allows me to see monthly totals for the entire network.  

    My ISP caps my monthly data at 1TB before I incur additional costs. The software I used with my old AirPort Extreme monitored this usage and would alert me if I got close to the limit. 

    It would be great to have a tool like that for monitoring data usage on my eero network.

    I BADLY need this feature. I'm having the same issue with Comcast claiming ridiculously high data usage and despite loving my Eeros (5 in the house), the lack of some type of network logging/monitoring (or best yet a bandwidth meter) is a real problem

    I agree. Just like the firewall that stealths the network, a traffic monitor which tracks data usage over the internet is standard on all routers now except for Eero. And neither one is resource intensive for the routers, but both are  vital for network admins and end users, for security and to make sure we don't go over the data caps imposed by our ISP's. 

    I'd love to have both incorporated into Eero.

    Jeff C. has the usage data been released? I'm up-to-date on my eero and I don't see any usage numbers for my devices. Also, do these collect any totals? I'm currently dealing with trying to isolate which of my devices is eating up my cap number with Comcast. Alternatively how about allowing integration with PeakHour3 which looks like it would do a lot of the totals I'm after (https://peakhourapp.com)

    The feature of current bandwidth activity in the app will be available in an upcoming release. We don't have a date to share at this time, but stay tuned.

    As for what data will be displayed, at this time, the plan is for app to show the current (live) activity. However, we do appreciate the feedback, and I'll be sure to share it with our team.

    For those with Comcast, while it can't tell you specific device usage, their mobile app called My Account displays the amount of data currently used on your network for that statement period. 

    I know this from personal use, but there may be a similar feature from other ISP's. This is definitely more of a band-aid than a solution, but thought it may be helpful to share 😀

    Jeff C. thanks for the response. RE: comcast - I'm currently trying to diagnose which of my devices is contributing to my usage. With data caps likely to only become more common, a really great feature would be for eero to tally the total and per device total and reset every month. Basically, I don't trust comcast and would like to have my own means of measuring my usage including attribution for my devices. The eero is the best place for this to live and seems like you guys are already on a path to do this.

    And I'll volunteer to beta test since I really want to solve my usage issues :)

      ascarter Allow users to set their billing start rather than just blindly using the 1st of the month.  This is no more difficult to code.  Also, set up configurable alerts if you are using more than X% of data in X% of time.  I.e. let me say my billing period starts on the 19th and if by the 28th I've used more than 25% of my data, let me know via alert.

      ascarter I am doing the same thing with my ISP - I see this is 2 years old now and the software PeakHour4 returns the message that the EERO does not support bandwidth monitoring.

    ascarter and Jeff C. I second that! Magically in the same month that Comcast instituted a data cap and started charging for overages, they claim my household data literally DOUBLED. I have not been able to find devices using anywhere near the daily amounts they claim - and have done all the usual troubleshooting (new wifi passwords, malware scans, etc.).

    vonburkleo That sounds almost exactly like what I'm seeing as well. I instrumented all my Macs and none are anywhere near the total Comcast is claiming. Take your pick if it is incompetence or deliberate.
