Feature Request: Bandwidth Monitor

With Comcast and others adding bandwidth caps id love to get internal alerts since Comcast numbers are so out of whack.

  • Is this feature going to happen or what?  I have a 1 TB monthly limit with Cox and I really need to track bandwidth, both real-time and historical.  When I first got my Eero a year or so ago it at least had real-time bandwidth utilization per device listed in the app when you looked at the connected clients list.  Now, with the new app update (a month or two ago I think) you no longer can get the real-time bandwidth usage at a glance, but instead you have to dig down and click on each connected device to view it's real-time bandwidth utilization.  Having to click on each device in the connected clients list to view the real-time bandwidth utilization is a step backwards in my opinion.  It was much more intuitive to have the real-time bandwidth utilization listed in the connected clients section so you could easily view real-time consumption across all devices in one glance. While I understand it was probably an attempt to make a clean interface for non-technical users so they could just look at their connected clients, why not move this data to a separate section in the app for those who want to see it? Having to click on each connected device (50+ in my case) to view the real-time usage for each is not very helpful.  Even more important than this though, is the ability to log historical bandwidth usage on a day/week/month basis.

EDIT: Here is an example of the change in the app I am referring to: https://support.eero.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000696666-How-do-I-see-how-much-bandwidth-my-devices-are-using-

    iOS Users:

    • Open the eero app
    •  Tap the Device Category, the Device is located under (Computer, Personal, Entertainment, Home and Other)
    • Tap the Device
    • The Device Bandwidth usage is listed under Activity
    • If the Device is Idle it will show the Last Active time

    Android Users:

    • Open the eero app
    • Tap the connected devices button. You can also view device usage by tapping the devices on your home screen.

I guess the Android app still lists real-time bandwidth the same as the iOS app used to.  I wish the iOS app wasn't updated.  The old app was functionally better.  Sure the new app is more pretty, but I would prefer function over beauty.

  • I'm actively looking for an eero replacement unfortunately. I've had my 4 unit eero pro mesh system for 1.5 years and it's been extremely reliable and a very good performer in our large home. However, the lack of this feature AND more importantly, the lack of communication from eero about the status of this feature is what's motivated my search. Without this capability we are flying blind in management of our network. That's unacceptable.

I thought eero may have been cash strapped and that is what was hindering development. So when Amazon bought them I was actually hopeful that we'd see the feature implemented sooner rather than later. But it hasn't been and we've heard nothing. Very disappointing.

Mgreer316 I, like you, was happy with the performance of my Eero pro mesh network in my home for 1.5 years.  I had to have this feature and switched to the current Google Mesh Wifi system 2 months ago.  My performance has been excellent (as good as or better than with Eero) and I have the detailed usage that I need over an hour, day, week or month by device.

Mgreer316 I contacted eero on Twitter a little while ago and they responded with this:

Thanks for checking in with us. I'm happy to confirm that a bandwidth monitor is still something we're actively exploring, but I'm not able to speculate on when it may become a full-fledged feature. We appreciate the interest, and we'll announce any new features!

Mgreer316 I agree. Their response wasn't very reassuring - I wish I could switch to a different product but it's far past the return date and we don't really want to spend another 500 bucks on more routers

carter eero doesn't require an annual subscription either. I had the subscription for a year but found no value in it for me. So I canceled it. Now if they offered bandwidth monitoring at the device level in a subscription I'd subscribe as that would be worth it to me.

Mgreer316 at that point I'd rather pay xfinity $50/month for unlimited data than eero $10/month just to see what's using what

Jason As of right now, I have unlimited data from Comcast. But that doesn't mean they couldn't change it at any time. So I still want to know what my monthly data consumption is at the device level.

  • Given that they've been looking at this for over three years, isn't it time for them to admit the only way it'll get implemented is on a new version of the hardware and will not be backward compatible?

willieabrams Yep and Eero went in the wrong direction. At one point they showed the bandwidth at the top level where all devices were displayed. Now you have to go to each device and look. Not helpful when you are looking for your top bandwidth users.

  • Also subject to Xfinity data cap. I’ve pretty much given up on Eero ever rolling this out and will be switching back to Google solely due to the lack of this feature. Such a no brainer I didn’t even think to check the functionality prior to purchasing. Unbelievable.

  • What is the current status on this request?

It seems Eero has gone backwards in this respect. Instead of showing network use for every host entry, you now have to go into the details of each host to see what it's doing. This is frustrating when trying to track down usage.

We should be able to monitor both in network and WAN (Internet) usage per host, in one screen that lists all hosts sorted by largest bandwidth usage.

Going one step further, would like to see the history of usage over a few days.

One step beyond that would be able to show bandwidth based on destination so we can answer the question "what service is driving my usage so high?" Is it Netflix, Backblaze, Amazon Prime, etc.?

The problem many are trying to solve is trying to keep below their ISP data cap. Without visibility into usage data it's difficult to figure out what is taking the bandwidth.

  • Who has given up hope that Eero will ever implement this feature with their current hardware? I have. There are many new Wifi 6 mesh options now available. Even though client devices that take advantage of Wifi 6 are currently sparse, that's the direction I'll be going in very soon. While my Eero mesh system has performed flawlessly for going on 2 years, I'm extremely disappointed they they haven't moved on what is a critical capability for their customers. They've steadily upgraded their software with "nice" features, but not this "critical" feature. Eero, the lack of this feature is costing your customers money!!!! This should be of dire concern to you. Priority number 1! But you've shown that it isn't.

A full featured dashboard tab, or vast update to Activity would be worth a nickel as a 'premium feature' - I know I'd pay a few dollars to avoid ISP tax.

And yes, my Eero mesh is the best thing I've owned which includes things I've built myself!

But visibility and management are key features, especially for the typical buyer OF Eero....geez.

  • Having to police data with my children is exhausting.  In addition, I now have the added responsibility to police data usage.  While that is not Eero's problem, I find it really difficult to influence my children's behavior if I do not know which devices are eating up all of my Internet bandwidth.  I want to be able to stream 4k content and have access to all the latest games but Comcast has really put a damper on having a connected household with a 1024GB cap before penalizing us financially.  Of course, now that schools are closed for over 6 weeks due to COVID-19, I'm very concerned that my data will overfill for stupid things like game downloads, game updates and streaming.  With my frustrations for Comcast aside, I can adjust all of these settings and have done so with the best of my knowledge but it is difficult to know which devices are the culprit.  In the past 24hours we have used over 100GB even after I have tried to prevent automatic downloads from our various systems and software programs.

    Please help us.

It would be very helpful for me to have at least a comment that acknowledges this as a priority to Eero.  If it is a priority, where does it stand in line with all other current priorities.

  • Yeah guys -- this feature is way overdue, and the most in demand request you have.

You're already serving up the current bw stats per device, could you at least give us a list of all currently connected devices with that so we can see what's happening in realtime in one place?

  • Network professional here. Really excited for this product, just implemented it in my home. Have it in IP passthrough so I’m not getting stats on my router/modem GUI. Having a bandwidth report, real time usage meter, and highest device usage would be excellent. Really hope this is pursued quickly.

Nkrueger38 The Eeros aren't bad, I'll just start off by saying that. However, I've had issues with their range not being the best which is kind of annoying. Sometimes standing close to a node won't even do that much. I think you'd be better off maybe trying the new Nest WiFi because you can actually see everything you'd need in the app, including this feature that's been requested 3 years ago. This video also seems pretty helpful when it comes to that stuff but I'm no professional

Jason I can relate, having issues with range and very disappointed the app doesn’t have any dashboard type visual for monitoring bandwidth. LONG OVERDUE for a feature that seems like HIGH IMPACT, LOW COST for the Eero team.

also currently looking into switching to Google’s WiFi system or another competitor.

  • I'd also like some sort of way to track bandwidth, or at least get back to the old iOS View that showed immediate consumption for everything in one shot.

In the current context of Shelter in Place, there's a lot of work being done from home.   When my work call suddenly starts dropping packets, I'd like to figure out if issue is due to another device starting a chatty network conversation.

Having little to no visibility into that makes this really difficult to accomplish.

  • This is the only remaining feature I miss from Google Wifi. If it's not possible with the current generation of devices, I would love an SDK so I can build one for myself.

I need to know how much my bandwidth my NAS device is using per month.

  • I'm...shocked this feature doesn't exist after two years of discussion. It's clearly already a stat that's tracked; why not make a simple grid table with host and current up/down and a sort toggle for each column?

I thought I'd replace my 1st gen google wifi with eero. This morning I was having some slowness so I went to see which device was consuming the bandwidth and eero can't do this? I mean I suppose I could manually click through each of the 43 devices on my network but...

Guess I'll be returning this and go back to my google wifi.

    • Even if all you did was to have an option to sort the list of devices on each access point  by consumption, then you'd only a have four to check rather than 43.   Add in sorting the access points by how much they are hosting and you'd have the top using device in one click

  • So in looking for this feature for our next wifi system it seems that Eero is off the list. We currently have an Orbi RBK50 and it also does NOT have this feature. Funny enough, on the Netgear forums there is a thread about just as long as this one. Looks like Google wifi is the only option.

    https://community.netgear.com/t5/Idea-Exchange-For-Home/Bandwidth-monitoring-by-device/idi-p/1627368/page/11

You'd think during this work from home push we've had with the Coronavirus the vendors would push this since so many ISP's have monthly data caps (Cox, Comcast, Frontier, etc). I know Cox is waiving data caps through to 30 June 2020 but I'm sure they'll put them back in place.

Keep up the good fight and push Eero to implement the feature but until then I'll be switching to Google unfortunately

This was requested and even mentioned that it's being worked on 2 years ago. And still nothing? Unacceptable, especially when the competition had it long ago.

Without this feature, my overage charges will be well over $100/month which unfortunately makes the switch to another router that has this extremely basic feature worth it. My old $60 router had it.

  • Worthwhile to consider the Meraki GO. They have this feature and have really been coming up with easy to manage products and more useful features than eero including 1) ability to control turning off and on 2.4ghz or 5ghz bands. 2) setup up to 4 SSIDs 3) plus much more. Only downside I see are 1) they don’t have a beacon style wall plugin 2) their fastest wifi speeds are equal to beacon with 2x2 antennas only.
