EERO 2nd gen slower Wifi throughput

Good morning,

I recently switched to the EERO mesh system. Love it overall and have not run into any too many issues its been stable and great for the most part. I did have a question in regards to the WIFI throughput capability. Yesterday I changed my internet plan with Comcast to the 1Gig service and bought a new DOCSIS 3.1 modem (Motorola Surfboard SB8200). From the modem I get 960GB wired without issues. The 2nd gen EERO router also gets around 850 down with 41 up on its internal speed test (screen shot below). However on wifi on my Galaxy S9 Plus and my 2017 Ipad Pro and wifes Iphone X  can only get a max of 220-300 and that’s on a good day. Initially when I tested this the below variables were set at the time.

Scenario 1

·         Eero Labs all options enabled (SQCM, Local DNS cache, Band Steering)

·         UPNP enabled

·         IPV6 off

·         Eero router (Main) is on the main floor of the 3 story townhome in the living room on top of an ikea wooden shelf. Secondary Eero router is in the office upstairs on top of my desk.

·         Modem is the SB8200

·         Max wireless throughput observed from Ipad, I phone X and Samsung galaxy S9 plus was ~220Mbps

·         EERO plus protection -ENABLED

Troubleshooting steps at this junction

Restarted both EERO routers. No wifi speed change

Swapped EERO routers, placed the office one in the living room and placed living room in office. Restarted and slightly faster but not noticeably quicker. Also noticed the morning after the speeds were actually slower than the night before.

Scenario 2

·         Eero Labs all options DISABLED (SQCM, Local DNS cache, Band Steering)

·         UPNP enabled

·         IPV6 off

·         Eero router (Main) is on the main floor of the 3 story townhome in the living room on top of an ikea wooden shelf. Secondary Eero router is in the office upstairs on top of my desk.

·         Modem is the SB8200

·         Max wireless throughput observed from Ipad, I phone X and Samsung galaxy S9 plus was  290Mbps to 310Mbps

·         EERO plus protection -Disabled

It looks like disabling the EERO labs options helped some but not a huge amount of change. It looks like theoretical throughput 5GHZ on the EERO routers should be around 800. I understand there are a TON of factors with wifi not being able to push that amount IE distance, interference, additional RF devices like wireless speakers. I took that all into account while testing and short of doing a wireshark packet trace I haven’t been able to pin point the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Also im on the latest version and it reflects “up to date” and my DNS is set to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1.

  • Wifi is half duplex. Whatever speed you get wired, you can essentially cut that number in half when connecting via wifi.
