New device automatic categorization in the app is flawed

I loved the Eero app until the most recent update to build 3.0.2 (1501). The new device categorization scheme is flawed. In working with tech support, I learned that the automatic categorization looks for specific words in the hostname or eero nickname you give it. For example, to get my son’s Pixel3 to categorize properly, I had to add the word “phone” to its eero nickname.  Easy enough, but others are more challenging. For example, our Yamaha A/V receiver is stuck in the “Other” category. According to tech support, I can add the words "TV" "Cable" or "DVR" to the eero nickname, but none of those apply to the Yamaha. I asked tech support for a list of keywords used by the app to auto categorize, but they could not provide it. To make things worse, the automatically-categorized devices do not appear alphabetically within each category. I thought they might be listed in the order of most recent network activity or heaviest traffic, but that does not appear to be the case.

I don’t mind having the auto-categorization as an option because some people may like it, but we have 30-40 devices connecting to our network at any one time and you should be able to disable the categorization or at least override the automatically-assigned categories.

Thanks for considering this as a Feature Request.

  • Fully agree.  None of our computers show up in “Computers and PersonaL”.   They are lost among dozens of smart plugs in the “Other” category.  This feature is useless if it does not work.  Worse, it makes the app less useful.

thank you for your post.  I too contacted support.   Unlike your experience, I was not told to add keywords to nicknames.  Instead I was told to delete and reinstall the app.
