Feature Request: Add support for PPPoE

many ISPs, including CenturyLink require PPPoE. Without this support, eero cannot be used as a router and only as a bridge.

All, I count 63 replies but only 30 votes for this feature. PLEASE go to the very top of the thread and VOTE for this or it will never happen. And tell your friends to do the same. They are obviously #not counting +1's in the replies since this req is ranked #20 by votes on their list. We have been waiting for over a year with Zero progress. Thank You.

Added my vote. Have Bell Fibe and no PPPoE totally prevents me from becoming a customer. Would love to but c'mon even the most basic of routers have PPPoE!

My frustration stems from my lack of understanding. I don't understand why PPPoE and lan tagging is hard to accomplish. Even though Google's mesh router system delivers, it was not without it's hiccups. How can my lousy $100 dsl modem/router provide something that my $500 Eero cannot? Why can the internet companies' junk equipment provide this function that Eero can't seem to make happen?

When I was originally considering eero, I was a cable internet customer and read online that eero worked great with Comcast. I made the mistake of not checking whether eero also supported CenturyLink (the other ISP that serves my area) in case I decided to switch in the future.

When I switched to CenturyLink 5 months ago, I was dismayed to discover the lack of PPPoE. I just assumed it would be there having seen it on every router I've owned in the past 20 years. (CenturyLink also needs VLAN tagging and it would be great to have this too, but that is easy to add with a managed switch).

I echo the sentiment of @ttnicky - those are exactly the questions that I've be asking myself.

please add your vote at the top of this page — we need to get our voice heard by eero Jeff C.

jadhajj I'm sure there are more than 34 of us using Eero that want PPPoE. Where is everyone else? I think those active on this board have probably voted already.

When I spoke to a support tech the other day on an unrelated topic, he actually suggested that 'a pro' could install a 'PPPoE injector' for me. I didn't know whether to laugh or get angry. I chose to laugh.

Denash97227 They're talking about a router in front of eero.

Y'all, this is listed as the 2nd feature under consideration, though I don't know if that list order actually means anything. So, another appeal for anybody who visits this thread to vote, up top, if they have not already. Thanks

Just upgraded from Comcast to CenturyLink 1Gbps symmetric service yesterday, only to discover that my only option was double-NATing.  I've been through countless routers over the years and was shocked that eero doesn't support this feature.  Shame on me for not checking beforehand--but honestly I don't remember every using a router that didn't support this.  Very disappointed.

a.j.singh I feel your pain! I purchased Eero while I was with a cable internet plan. At the time Eero cost me $500, way more than the $60-70 routers I was used to buying. I thought surely this was a premium product that would handle my basic internet needs. Less than a year later I moved and had to switch internet companies. I didn't realize DSL was still around when I signed up for CenturyLink, had no idea about PPPoE or any of this stuff. Now I'm left with $500 equipment that sometimes feels more of a hinderance than a help. I can't help but feel resentment when I receive the frequent marketing emails from Eero asking me to buy new products or services. If I hadn't already sunk half a grand into this I would go with a different product. Their reluctance to fix this adds insult to injury as this thread has been open for quite some time.

Anyway, I'm just complaining now. Sorry to piggy-back on your disappointment.

a.j.singh I have CL gigabit as well and was able to solve the Double NAT problem by going to the CenturyLink Modem/Router page and enabling DMZ Hosting for the eero gateway. This will forward all traffic coming in to your Eero and essentially take the CL box out of the picture, except for authenticating your connection. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darned close.

ttnicky I'm with you!  I thought I was done searching for a solid and reliable WiFi solution.  I'll try rcdemski  's DMZ option. If it works for me, I think I'll be okay.  Fiber is much more accessible these days and costs have dropped to a point where I'm only paying a $20 premium over Comcast for service that's 4x faster downloading, and 10x faster uploading.  These configurations are going to become much more common.

rcdemski is this something that is unique to gigabit or might it also work with standard CL high speed accounts?

ttnicky   I've only tried this with my CL gigabit but I suppose it'd work with any CenturyLink service assuming the modem offers the same options.

Here's the DMZ Hosting setting for mine that fixed my double NAT situation: http://www.centurylink.com/home/help/internet/modems-and-routers/zyxel-c1100z/advanced-setup/dmz-hosting.html

rcdemski Hmmm, I tried putting the eero gateway in the DMZ last night, but it didn't work for me, so I just set up port forwarding for ports 20 - 50000.  When my machines are free, I'll try the DMZ configuration again.  Any problems with stability or performance?  And just to double-check, you're not running your eero bridged are you?

a.j.singh The first time I tried DMZ Hosting it didn't seem to do any good. Then I bounced both the modem and eero setup and things magically started to work. The eero will not see the public IP address, just what the CL modem assigns (192.168.1.x), but that aside it behaves as if it's connected directly to public internet.

I am not in bridged mode.

As for stability and performance, in 3 months I've had to bounce the CL modem once but otherwise it's been solid. Speed tests when wired to the gateway are consistently 800-950mbps up and down.

If it helps, my CL modem is the ZyXEL C1100Z

I tried the DMZ configuration and it worked.  However I lost NAT Loopback/Hairpin NAT.  After a lot more research I yanked my CL modem out of my configuration and connected my ONT directly to my ASUS AC68.  This 4-year old router supports PPPOe and even VLAN Tagging, though the option is buried (see image).  And of course I was forced to throw my eero into Bridge mode.  Performance is excellent via ethernet (950+Mbps up and down), and NAT Loopback works great.  Wireless performance through my eero mesh is working well, getting around 400Mbps up and down via WiFi near my gateway eero, and around 250Mbps up and down near my other eeros.  Going through all this has taken me many, many hours that would have been avoided if eero supported features that even $150 routers support these days.  Hopefully the dev team gets the message.

I was trying to access this forum from my phone and didn't have the address bookmarked, so I did a Google search for it and stumbled on a Reddit thread where an Eero employee said something to the effect of "seriously: this is on our roadmap," but can't talk about future features, etc. This was 43 days ago. Maybe there is hope this is actively being worked on?

I am in Saudi Arabia, all ISP’s uses PPPOE.

my plan was to drop Apple router & replace it with Eero.

but seems I need to wait till the release the PPPOE feature if the do it.

any suggested solution to over come this.

    thanks

This product review for the T-P Link Deco showed up in my news feed today (http://www.businessinsider.com/fast-home-wifi-system-tp-link-deco-m5-review-2018-5). Similar aesthetic to the Eero for significantly less. I did a quick google search and found that they support PPPoE. I might give them a look if I ever muster the courage to finally switch to something that will support my ISP without having to bridge.
