Feature Request: Add support for PPPoE

many ISPs, including CenturyLink require PPPoE. Without this support, eero cannot be used as a router and only as a bridge.

  • +1 centurylink fiber. Going to try the  dmz option but ideally I’d ditch the double-router situation

  • Soon eero is going to be a paper weight for me without PPPoE, I have to invest on other gigabit router inorder to use eero, this wifi router is useless unless it's going to support PPPoE. I have made a worst decision for going with eero over Orbi

  • +1 for adding PPPOE support.  Honestly, I did not even check to see if Eero supported this before buying.  I just assumed because every other router supported it the feature would be there.  Really dislike having to double NAT my network. This is a huge miss for Eero.

  • I do have to say, this was a huge blemish on my Eero experience, and it came right after I unboxed it and plugged it in.  I have Windstream DSL, Static IP in Bridge Mode.  I expected to set up the Eero the same as every other router I have ever used:  Plug it in, select PPPoE, enter my credentials, and off I go.  Instead, I had to do a factory reset on my modem, which screwed up my Static IP settings (and I still have not gotten that sorted out) which in turn, screwed up my OpenDNS account.  Aside from all that, though, I've been pleased with Eero thus far.  I've always had the usual issues with DSL: bufferbloat when someone is uploading, which kills download speeds, and it seems like Eero is doing a good job of making sure all devices on my network behave themselves and not choke the network.  So good job there.  Just please, implement PPPoE!

  • Does Eero staff ever look at this?  Give me one good reason for me not shoving this non-PPPoE stuff back into the box and returning.  Why double NAT when I can buy google mesh? Mad at myself for not even considering that a router product didn't cover a basic protocol.  Will let folks know on Amazon product reviews of this product's failure.

  • Absolutely need.  Have my network on a UPS and the Garage doors are Wifi enabled.  Have a POE access point in the garage so if the power goes out, it stays on...and I can use the Phones to open the doors.  Would love to have a seamless network...all EERO

  • Looking to make the move from Comcast to CenturyLink and glad I found out about this.  Since this is still in "under consideration" I won't get my hopes up since i'll need both this and VLAN ID to make it happen.  I've liked my eero for the past 2 yrs but if I go CL this may be a deal breaker since there are other options.

garretblack I switched to CL after I bought these and learned the hard way about PPPoE and VLAN tagging. It used to really bother me and I wished I'd had a competitor's product that did it all in one (e.g., Google WiFi). Now though, I don't even think about it. The biggest pain point for me was having to use CL's crappy hardware in tandem with eero, but once I figured out a reliable alternative to CL hardware I don't really think about it anymore. My system runs pretty smooth and I have just gotten used to not having the network control I used to have when eero ran standalone. I don't think Bridge Mode is worth the $500 I paid for the eero's, but aside from the cost (which I swallowed 3 years ago), my network runs fine. Would I purchase the product today? Absolutely not. But, I did purchase it and the cost is paid and it works, albeit not how I wanted it to. For the first year or two I had hope eero would address this, but after 3 years and no movement, and the sale to Amazon, I think it's pretty unlikely I'll ever see that functionality in my current eero's. My recommendation is to think twice before buying if someone has CL/PPPoE. There are other products at similar price points that will work with that setup. Will there be issues? Sure, but with Eero you have Bridge Mode and extra hardware with limited functionality. So which is better? That's a personal decision.

garretblack Edit: I see, like me, you already have Eero so it's not an issue of whether to buy or not, just what to do if you make the switch to CL. My rant still stands, but may not be of interest to you ;)

    • ttnicky did you try putting your eero in the dmz aka double bat? Leaves the Cl hardware there but allows normal eero functions.  People report it works well.  I’m switching on wed so I’ll find out.

garretblack I considered putting it in the dmz, but ultimately did not for two reasons. 1) I'm pretty savvy but I'm not that savvy, I worried I might leave a vulnerability in my network by not knowing exactly what I was doing. 2) 99% of the time my network failures were due to CL's crappy hardware and so I wanted that out. I have CL fiber and that made it easier to get rid of their hardware (input to my replacement router is now ethernet instead of DSL). Between port forwarding and static ips for my wired devices, I can do all the fancy stuff I needed with my router and just let eero handle my wifi in bridge mode. It's annoying in principle but I have the function I need with this setup.

    • ttnicky What router did you replace the CL PPOE router with?  I'm not sure what you mean by DSL... there's no DSL connection in a fiber -> CL PPOE router -> Eero configuration.

garretblack yes, what I was trying to imply is that my setup works because I have fiber. I previously had their DSL service and I couldn't replace their hardware then because I couldn't find a third party DSL router. But since fiber outputs a RJ45 connection from the gateway, it was easy to replace their router. I have a mikrotik wired router that takes the input from the fiber gateway, handles the PPPoE and VLAN tagging, all the routing, and sends a cat5e output to my network switch. My eeros connect to the switch and essentially function as hotspots, simply providing the wifi for my wireless devices while the mikrotik router does all the heavy lifting. It cost around $60 if I remember correctly, is small, and is rock solid. I haven't touched it the year I've had this setup and have had zero connectivity issues. Using the CL router I would have frequent power cycles that increased to daily after 1 year because it was dying. You can find a few detailed tutorials online if you search for "replace CenturyLink fiber router mikrotik." If you are interested and can't find them, I'm sure I have them bookmarked. Of course there are any number of other router options, I went with this one because 1) it was affordable, 2) people consistently had success with it, and 3) it is one of the few that is able to handle symmetrical gigabit speeds.

  • I work for a medium sized ISP and believe the eero technology is the best there is.

The bottom line is that if they had PPPoE, I'd sell a ton of them.
    Without it, I can't.

FYI We do NOT sell DSL. We do fiber and fixed wireless.
It is a myth that only DSL uses PPPoE.
The authentication method has nothing to do with the topology.

  • Same here many many MANY countries use PPPoE, i had to set them as bridge for them in order to work since i have to use my old router for dhcp, port forwarding, static routing (VPN network) and ofc PPPoE.

  • I just bought an Eero 3 pack and could not get connected to the internet.  After talking to Support, I learned that the devices are not compatible wit PPPoE.  I was informed that I could use them in bridged mode which is how they are setup at the moment.  With the number of subscribers that have DSL connections, I was shocked that this is not supported.  After reading this thread dating back 3 years, I have to presume that Eero will never support PPPoE, considering they didn't add it with Gen 3 despite the number of inquiries.  I have to say these are going back to Best Buy.  I will probably go with the Google Nest as they support PPPoE as does the Netgear Orbi, TP-Link Deco, etc.  It's too bad because they seem to be a good product otherwise.

  • Hi,

In the retail fixed broadband market, BT holds a 37% market share, followed by Sky (24%), Virgin Media (20%), TalkTalk (12%) and other providers (8%)5. https://www.parliament.uk/documents/commons-committees/Exiting-the-European-Union/17-19/Sectoral%20Analyses/37-Telecommunications-Report.pdf

Given these stats and knowing BT, who uses pppoe, is the largest provider and that many other providers above also do, please could you at least give an idea of intention for this feature. This request has been open for 2 years with no recent update.

I think, sadly, I will have to return the Eero I have just purchased and buy a competitor that does support the most common standard to connect to the internet via UK ISPs.

Please could i also recommend, in the interest if customer obsession,  you make this very clear on the Amazon UK site at the point of sale? The rhetoric behind Eero appears to be simplicity but for most of the UK this certainly doesnt make it a simple solution.

    Thanks :)

  • Just got my centurylink 1GB fiber installed.. was following directions to put in "bridge" mode and here I am.. I have 4x eero Pro, disappointed I'm not able to use bridging with eero.

    +1 to add functionality

  • I bought my set of eero pros one year ago, I was disappointed that it wasn't working, but I thought it would be just a matter of time until this was implemented since it's such a basic feature for a router.
Finally brought myself to create a username here just to +1 this feature request.

  • Huge omission not to have this feature. Launching in the UK where pppoe is pretty much the standard. Massively disappointed after, and I can’t say upgraded at this point, from Apple airports that supported pppoe and was a much cleaner setup. Sad times...😕

  • Given it's unlikely that eero hardware has enough grunt to do full speed PPPoE recapsulation - anyone got a recommendation for a bridge box that will ? Turns out my ISP's router tops out at 600mb/s even if I do double-NAT my home behind it and an eero.

BigValen Huh. No. I get 600mb/s over wired, 420mb/s on wifi to the ISP's router, and 220mb/s if I have go wifi through the eero + ISP's router. So yeah.

eero really doesn't shine with those oddball ISPs.

  • I moved mine to DMZ mode via my CenturyLink admin UI and at least now I'm not in a double NAT situation and my PLEX remote works. Speeds were still the same both ways - high.

  • Trying to avoid using the centurylink ui as well as their modem/router unit. Plugging eero directly would be most ideal. Currently doing that with the netgear nighthawk. I'm waiting for Eero's wifi6 solution. Hopefully PPPoE will be implemented there, otherwise i'm giving up on Eero.
