Feature Request: Add support for PPPoE

many ISPs, including CenturyLink require PPPoE. Without this support, eero cannot be used as a router and only as a bridge.

  • I was trying to access this forum from my phone and didn't have the address bookmarked, so I did a Google search for it and stumbled on a Reddit thread where an Eero employee said something to the effect of "seriously: this is on our roadmap," but can't talk about future features, etc. This was 43 days ago. Maybe there is hope this is actively being worked on?

  • I am in Saudi Arabia, all ISP’s uses PPPOE.

my plan was to drop Apple router & replace it with Eero.

but seems I need to wait till the release the PPPOE feature if the do it.

any suggested solution to over come this.

    thanks

  • This product review for the T-P Link Deco showed up in my news feed today (http://www.businessinsider.com/fast-home-wifi-system-tp-link-deco-m5-review-2018-5). Similar aesthetic to the Eero for significantly less. I did a quick google search and found that they support PPPoE. I might give them a look if I ever muster the courage to finally switch to something that will support my ISP without having to bridge.

  • +1 on PPPoE one feature will allow to remove a complete device and enable us to use eero Plus

  • I signed up just to +1 this.... I just moved into my new home and signed up for Centurylink Gigabit. I very much look forward to the day I'm able to use my eeros like normal again.

  • Just bought my Eero's on Amazon and wanted to sign in to support this.  Seems like the most solid Mesh wifi available but if you supported PPPoE it would make things much easier for me...

  • Another +1 from someone who bought a set of 3 only to discover I have to keep my old router around to handle PPPoE and deal with the consequences.

  • Please provide PPPoE support so that I can use the eero with all the great features it provides within my bell fibe setup.

  • If you are planning to roll eero out to other countries, PPPoE is by far the most common type of internet connection in the UK (where I am), so having this implemented would be great for those plans.

Until then I guess I'm stuck with double NAT like everyone else 😢

  • Can we at least get a position on this? Is it being worked on, is there an idea on when its going to be available for beta testing? Is the company position still that this is not going to be worked on? I'm sorry, but this is very basic feature. I have 4 eeros and double natting is a horrible situation to be at.

  • I’m also on CenturyLink fiber in Seattle and I’d gladly give up my Linksys Velop setup and purchase new Eero devices if you could support PPPoE at a minimum. It would be ideal if you could simultaneously support IPv6 “Rapid Deployment” and VLAN tagging on the WAN interface. CLINK specifically uses VLAN 201 and only supports IPv6 only over the “Rapid Deployment” protocol. Linksys supports all these technologies but I’ve had issues with needing to reboot their devices regularly.

  • Also signed up here specifically so I could vote. I could get rid of my bridges and use my Eero fully if PPPoE was implemented

  • A big +1 to this. I have an old Airport between my terrible ISP-supplied modem/router and my gateway eero, just to handle PPPoE, so I can keep the modem in bridge mode and not rely on it for too much. Would love to remove that Airport and let eero do this work.

  • As a custom integrator, it was a huge shock to me realizing that Eero does not support PPPoE. I have been configuring and supporting routers for close to 20 years and even inexpensive, basic routers support PPPoE. It's embarrassing and laughable. Our firm is considering making Eero a major part of our product offering, but it is difficult for me to recommend that we go this route with an awesome product that is missing such a basic feature, especially since so many of our customers have DSL service that almost always requires PPPoE authentication.

  • Yeah, I've about given up on this ever coming to eero. I am looking elsewhere for my next router needs. Eero in bridge mode eliminates almost all the reasons I purchased eero in the first place. Can't believe I spent $500 on this product. It was about 1 month before they lowered their prices, too. Double-kick to the shins. But I'm not bitter... ;)

  • Add my vote to this please, I'm already a customer/advocate and I'm unable to have the best of Eero and the highest speed provider in my area due to lack of PPPoE. YOU CAN DO IT!!! I BELIEVE IN YOU!!!

  • All, a quick reminder that, in addition to your earnest notes, pls remember to click the vote button at the very top. This request has been open and unaddressed for more than a year.  Other feature requests are clearly consuming the dev team so we have apparently not yet crossed the bar to warrant them taking this feature on. Thanks.

I'm the local nerd who all my neighbors ask, "what should I buy?" - and I can't recommend eeros. :(

phonejill I just saw your post. If you have CenturyLink fiber, you can easily get rid of the CenturyLink equipment. I just did it myself last month.

Buy a mikrotik wired router (about $50 on Amazon). It will take the Ethernet feed from your ONT and handle all the PPPoe and vlan tagging. You can use other routers, but lots of people have success in keeping their gigabit speeds with this device (many other routers aren't capable of the symmetrical gigabit up/downlink). Your eeros will still be in bridge mode as the mikrotik will do the routing, but at least you won't have a crappy Zytel equipment. There are several tutorials for this and it was easy enough for me to do it.

  • I have major instability with my eero system and CenturyLink’s routers, to the point  of crashing the system almost nightly under heavy loading. I am convinced it’s because of double nat and dhcp between two routers is inherently unstable under heavy loading. Offering PPPoE would fix this. As it stands now, I am forced to bridge my EEROs system and if that is the case, as a pre gen 1 charter adopter and gen 2 user, I will be looking else where for a mesh system. I have over 1k in dollars between gen 1 and gen 2 systems and to have it gutted down to bridge mode because of a lack of pppoe is disheartening.

    • DWRocks It's not ideal, but since Eero does not support PPPOE, I make the IP range of the DSL gateway two IP addresses (1 for Eero and 1 for a computer if it were to be connected to the router to access the GUI). Then make the DSL gateway DMZ to the IP address that is assigned to the Eero, allowing all traffic and routing to be handled by the Eero.

I would prefer PPPOE with the gateway in bridge mode, but this allows the full Eero features without having to place the Eero in bridge mode.

Spoonhandle Spoonhandle it's ridiculous we even have to do stuff like that. I just moved and am fortunate enough to live in a CenturyLink fiber zone. Since that gateway device uses a cat5e cable instead of dsl, I was able to buy a $50 mikrotik wired router that handles the PPPoE and vlan tagging. I'm still in bridge mode with my eeros, but at least I got rid of the awful CenturyLink modem/router.

Spoonhandle I had my system/EERO out on a DMZ, but took your advice and limited the IP reservation from 26 addresses down to just 2, ie, the EERO and a second hardwire connection into the router.  I am not sure it will help much, but it cant hurt to limit the lookup table down to just 2 addresses.  As well, my system is double nat addressed, which until there is an PPPoE login capability, seems to be where we are all at.  What I did find for the heavy loading on my system that seemed to crash it at the worst times, looks like it was an IPV6 issue.  I had IPV6 set on my modem/router and on my EERO systems. When you heavily load the system with streaming data, it seems to overload the que on the EEROs, causing almost a "turtle mode" that looks like a frozen system.  I disabled the IPV6 on the modem/router and as well on the EEROs system.  Everything is rock solid now.  Thanks for the suggestion Spoonhandle..

  • Here we are, a year later, still have my 4 eeros in bridge mode on CL fiber. Why doesn't  eero just mark this feature request ,(PPPoE & vlan tagging)  'not doing' rather than 'considering'. Gives us false hope.

Denash97227 yeah, I've basically given up hope that this will ever happen. I am choosing to stick with CL because their fiber is rock solid and more affordable than the competition and no data cap, which means I am also choosing to stay in bridge mode. Next time I upgrade my routers, it will not be with Eero. For now this works, but it definitely isn't worth the $500 I paid.

@ttnicky, it breaks my heart to have to agree with you. I'm in Product Management and understand well the process of prioritizing feature requests with a supporting business case. Since we already bought these (I bought 4!) with the assumption that certainly one of the largest gb networks in the country would be supported - we won't be buying any more. Now it's a customer sat issue. Many, many other prospects  - who are smart enough to check -  will go with google wifi, orbi etc etc.,  Life lesson.

  • All, FWIW, I put my Eero gateway in my CL router DMZ. Goodbye, bridge mode. Good thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/eero/comments/9haw7n/steps_for_centurylink_fiber_eero_in_dmz/

Now the CL router is basically a 2-port gb ethernet switch: no routing/dhcp/NAT. Works great. Will leave more comments if I notice any downside.

Denash97227 I’ve tried that. NAT Loopback/Hairpin NAT doesn’t work with this setup. If you don’t need it then you’re golden.  But it’s a requirement for me.

Denash97227 I can't stand the CL routers, my last one kept losing its connection. I could probably setup a DMZ with my third-party router but I'd need to figure out how.

a.j.singh Can I ask was is the reason you use NAT loopback/Hairpin?  Routing is still new to me and I still don't know why most folks want to get rid of their Bridge or NAT setup.  Is the eero's gateway hub speed or range being bottled neck in any of these modes?

  • I live in Japan and my ISP only uses PPPoE. I’m paying for 1Gbp but only getting 150-300 depending on bridge or double NAT with my TP-Link AC2300 router and Eero.  Bridge gets me faster speeds but requires a router reboot very often.  Requesting developer response to the status of this highly voted request.

Kinda a shame that this thread is full of hopes but we can’t even get a “We are really working on it” or “We decided not to” regarding PPPoE support.  I bought a Gen 2 during my visit to the states and it made a world of difference for my family there.  I decided to buy another for myself and bring it to Japan.  Unfortunately, most ISPs here use PPPoE which means that Eero is missing out on a market out here.

Jun I get 950+ Mbps up and down through my Asus AC68U.  I have VLAN tagging enabled so I don’t need to use my ISP-supplied modem.  And of course I have my Eero system (6 2nd Gen eero pro’s) bridged.  If your router needs to be rebooted that often you may want to look for another router or perhaps put a cooling fan on your current router to see if that improves stability.  But of course you’re right it’s a shame Eero doesn’t support PPPoE. I don’t expect they ever will.  Life is too short to wait for them to get to it. Just expect to need a stable wired router and use Eero in bridged mode.

a.j.singh Problem is that my fiber line plugs into a NTT ONU box which is configured by the ISP for PPPoE so I cannot replace the converter/modem.  Therefore, I need something that can be PPPoE configured such as my TP-Link router and bridge my eero to through it. My TP-Link router has been dumbed down into a switch since I turned off the antenas and other features. I'm begining to wonder if my problem is my ISP but can't say for sure since PPPoE is not supported.

As mentioned, I swapped out my family's ISP supplied modem (D-Link Wireless AC Smartbeam 1750) which was only outputting 60mps with a 2nd Gen eeros and 2 beacons. This resulted in 200-250mbps on average.  I was sold on it's drastic improvement so decided to go back into BBuy and get one for myself since they don't sell eeros out here in Japan. My shock when figured out the hard way that PPPoE was not supported. I've spent that last two days thinkering with both Bridged and NAT'ing.  Some devices connect to the beacons but get no internet access and sometimes the bridge falls apart and I need to reboot my TP-Link router.

Jun Many routers can't handle the simultaneous 1Gb throughout and so output much less (300-600 Mbps). Even though your provider is not CL, you can see descriptions of this problem if you look at forums geared to replacing CL modem for CL fiber (that's where I stumbled on the info). Many people have reported success with the wired mikrotik hex router. If you Google "CenturyLink fiber Mikrotik" you should find the relevant information. I don't have a Gb plan, but went through the same setup: fiber to ISP-supplied ONT gateway box, cat5e to Mikrotik router to handle the vlan tagging and PPPoE, to eero in bridge mode. People do report full Gb speeds with this setup (like I said, I don't have a Gb plan so can't personally confirm).

Thanks for reaching out yonathan55 , we appreciate your interest in this feature. Since PPPoE requires a fundamentally different firmware structure, there are a lot of challenges implementing it into a system like eero. That said, I'm happy to confirm that it's something we're still actively considering, and we'll be sure to announce any new developments on that front. Until then, we appreciate all the great feedback y'all have been giving us!
