VPN options for Sever and Client.

Having the option for a VPN client connection would be great. With s curry and safety every network should be using a VPN.

  • Hey everyone –

Just in case you didn't see, in December, we will be launching our partnership with Encrypt.me VPN for eero Plus members. In addition to VPN, members will also get access to 1Password for password management and Malwarebytes for virus scanning.

Jeff C. Encrypt.me is a great perk, but unless I misunderstand - it's not running from our Eero's (and thus protecting all our the devices on our networks.). Rather, it's something we can install on our compatible machines (and as such, provides different functionality than what I think most of us were hoping for.)

Jeff C. I missed this. Thanks for the heads up! While this is definitely a step forward, I would still prefer the eero to act as my VPN gateway instead of individual clients within my network. If VPN connectivity is established at the gateway, I know *all* of my traffic is encrypted beyond my ISP regardless of platform (including unsupported encrypt.me OS's/devices) or requiring household users to enable a client.

Jeff C. Props to Eero for providing yet another good update. For any advanced users reading this, you can simply set up a Raspberry Pi and set up a VPN on it, which is what I have done.

There are some handy installers you can use to very easily get it set up quickly. Some configuration required to support loopback, but it does VPN native on your network and does anything you need it to. A good fun project you can do if you can handle the technical aspect of it.

Otherwise, this VPN sounds like a different option that can provide a secure connection. Not sure how it acts though on your local network, given that is another big reason why you would want to use a VPN, so you can access local network resources securely remotely,  Hopefully, the Eeero VPN add-on provides similar functionality.

Snorange That is correct. I'll be sure to continue to share this feedback with the team. The great thing about encrypt.me is you can 1. use it on an unlimited number of supported devices and 2. get VPN coverage both while at home and on the road.

Jeff C. I currently use Encrypt.me on my phone and tablet (and have since it was Cloak.) It's been a great service, and I'm glad to see it offered with Eero Plus.

However, we really need the ability to let our gateway handle our VPN tasks. It unburdens our own machines, and allows protection to expand beyond OS's supported by any given VPN.

My ideal, personally, would be to see Eero support a service (like Encrypt.me) right on the gateway, AND provide an OpenVPN interface. Many of the other well-liked VPN providers (such as PIA) can be connected to by an OpenVPN client.

With gateway integration, whether through Encrypt.me , OpenVPN (or I would hope, both), Eero would need to handle DNS leaks, IPV6 leaks and kill WAN connections should the VPN go down (or provide the option to enable this functionality). Push notifications of VPN connectivity issues are key.

I really hope to see this. Privacy problems are getting out of hand, and your hardware is in a unique situation to make this possible for a lot of people - including those who aren't the savviest. Privacy shouldn't be only the domain of the technically sophisticated, and I think this is a value shared by your company.

Jeff C. Related question - how is Eero Plus providing it's antimalware, etc, to an encrypted connection?

Jeff C. I would like to be able to use the VPN of my choice, since I have been using Express VPN with the previous router system.

    • Jeff C. Encrypt.me is not compatible with my TV, nor my refrigerator, and certainly not my smart plugs. I need native VPN to protect all my traffic.

  • Further still, allow a VPN built on the eero network so devices, particularly kid's devices, can still be monitored.

  • Thanks everyone for chiming in. I wanted to get ahead of this before it potentially spurns in a certain direction...

While we absolutely want you to share your interest in this feature so we can continue to track interest, please respect that this is a community about eero and connectivity. Keep the requests qualitative, but also make sure your discussion doesn't move into or provoke any sort of political debate.

    Thank you!

  • Jeff C. I get where you're coming from, and my interest in a VPN feature is solely so that I can keep all my traffic private and from being sold by my ISP (who is my only option for internet service).

  • Due to the recent decision to allow ISP’s to sell my traffic data, I am interested in establishing a VPN at my gateway. I can already do this at the client level. But, not everyone in my house is competent enough to know how to use a VPN.  Also, many of the devices in my home cannot effectively run a VPN client.

… please respect that this is a community about eero and connectivity.

I would like to request support for eero to have VPN client support connecting the home network to an external VPN provider. I request support for OpenVPN, Private Internet Access, TorGuard, BlackVPN, MullVAD etc.

  • I use Private Internet Access, have used them for a few years with no issues. I would love to see Eero add the ability to tunnel all your traffic to a VPN provider.

    Thanks!

  • I thought this thread was originally focused on VPN connectivity from within my LAN to the wild, thusly obfuscating my traffic from my ISP, etc.  You bring up an excellent point, that I had not been considering, VPN connections from the wild to the LAN.  Both features would be great.  I'd prioritize outbound connectivity first, in my case.

  • Yes please, outbound VPN support (native VPN client) would be very nice! I'd also like to say for example I don't need this and that device to go through the VPN tunnel (for example Xbox).

  • In the meantime, I setup a Raspberry Pi with an OpenVPN server to provide VPN support. However, Eero does not support loopback NAT, so I had to configure the VPN in a way that allowed me to access the internal network resources, as if I was actually on the network, while connected to the VPN. I am looking forward to when Eero has better support for VPN on the network.
