Assign a device to a specific eero

I was recently going through my connected device list and noticed I have some of my devices connected to an eero which isn't the closest one to it.  Wouldn't it make more sense to bind a device to a specific eero?  For example, my Ring doorbell is maybe 10 - 15 feet from the closest eero but it is connected to one upstairs and further away.  Not sure if that would cause a QoS kind of issue but for stationary devices I don't see them moving from one eero to another (Nest products, Amazon Echo, Ring doorbell, etc.)

I do not understand if this has been an issue for over 6 years why has there not been an update to allow you to select a specific router for a device to connect with? Especially since Eero is now being implemented to be boosted with Echo Devices.

Chiming in here - I signed up for a community account just to say this would be a really helpful feature. As was called out in other posts, power cycling some smart home items is a huge pain, and just designating a 'preferred' Eero would be great.

Guys do the same , even when they do it that u will be able to choose what wero u want to use more like u will have to pay £9 monthly for eero plus ! For futures that other wifi router have as a basic ..

I am new to Eero and do not understand why this is not a thing-- especially after 6 years of people asking? It seems like a very basic request.

It appears as if in the app this is possible, but when I click on the "connected to" preference section under a particular device, it is clear that this is not actually a "preference" section at all because there aren't any options for this.

Also, I just called Customer Support to ask about this and they provided me with information counter to information provided by Customer Support team members here. 🙄

I'd definitely love to see this feature implemented, although I have no issue with the devices "roaming" for a brief period of time when the assigned eero is offline for any reason (e.g. when updating).  I'd rather have them connected on a slower connection than not connected at all.  However, when the assigned eero comes back online, the device should be moved back from the non-preferred eero to the assigned eero.  This is a huge issue for multiple devices in my household (e.g. wireless printers that sit 6 feet away from an eero on the second floor but connect to an eero on the first floor on the other side of the house and occasionally refuse to print), but the one that always causes heartburn is when my wife can't get the Logitech Harmony remote to work with the TV because the Harmony Hub connected to a distant eero after the closest one rebooted for system updates.  Every time this happens, I get an earful and end up having to power cycle the Harmony Hub.

One more scenario where this would help: a stereo pair of HomePods each one with a preferred eero 6e means they tend to go out of sync due to slight latency. If they shared one beacon things would work better at high bandwidth and nanosecond latency scale.

Add my name to the growing list of disappointed eero users specifically for the failure to be able to assign a device to a specific eero unit. Are you suggesting that this is beyound your engineering team’s ability or you just don’t see the need to implement it?

Echoing what others have written, I need the option to permanently assign a wireless device to a specific eero node in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band of my choosing. And I need it yesterday, not 6 years from now.

Following is the exact text of an e-mail exchange that I initiated with eero support. (“I” = BigPond, “You” = eero support)

      “I wrote:

      • Stationary devices like printers and TVs do not need to be dynamically steered between eero hubs (do I need to tell you this?!), but that is what is happening all too often, with a consequent loss of functionality.

      ”You replied:

      • We have a feature called client steering which helps the devices, while they are in use, to shift them to a different node. But inherently since these devices (TV, Printer) do not roam, they might take some time to optimize and find a stronger eero node.

“To reiterate: Using the eero app, I have witnessed the TV, which was working fine on 2.4 GHz with the nearest hub, switch to 5 GHz on the more distant hub, with a consequent loss of function. Your client steering is not optimizing and finding a stronger signal, it’s doing the exact opposite!

      “I wrote:

      • I’ve posted more than once on the eero Community board asking for the capability of statically assigning wireless devices to selected eero hubs on selected spectrum bands. Other Community posters have been asking for this for 6 years, and your company’s replies have been shockingly unhelpful.

      “You replied:

      • We have been listening, and have been adding any features that our customers would like, to our reports, so the engineers are fully aware of this.

“Your engineers have been incapable of incorporating this feature for SIX YEARS?! That’s pathetic!

“Look at the eero Community board—this is the third-most requested feature, and many other posters have described numerous situations that are made worse by eero’s defective client steering.”

This is still needed, having an issue with casting to a TV which requires both devises being on the same eero to work...

The TV is 3 feet from an eero but connects to the one upstairs...the laptop in the same spot coonects to the eero 3 feet away???

The simplicity of Eero has its place, for some, but the lack of features, functionality and performance made me move to ASUS ZenWifi XT9 7800.  I've been waiting for Eero to deliver the ability to bind a device to a specific AP, which is pretty clear, isn't on their development list.  I will say over the past few years I have seen improvement with the device to AP assignments but once in a while I would find a device (ring cameras) that connected to the furthest AP for no reason.  With the ASUS, a simple click permanently assigns a device to the closest AP and life has never been so good.  In addition, I get way better throughput (up to 2.5x the speed) and ASUS is way more feature-rich, including a VPN server.  The ASUS is more technically complex (it's not cloud-based management) so it may not be user-friendly to those less technical.  I have to say that I enjoyed reading all the responses to this request over the many years, especially those that stood on their soapbox to preach the 802 WiFi standards and yet, sure enough, many others have figured out a way to make device binding to a specific mesh AP a reality.

WORST SYSTEM EVER! They always point fingers at everyone else, charge an arm and a leg for their neutered system, and REFUSE to listen to customers. 6+ years! Wake up Eero! This is a huge problem. Never buying another one of their devices until this and other issues are fixed!

Big +1 for this one from me too. I've used Eero for close to 10 years in 3 different houses. My newest house is a two-story layout. The main router is on the second level where my office lies. But my master bedroom is above the kitchen, which is where the extender lives. I have fiber internet and when I'm connected to the office eero from the master bedroom I get up to 700 MBPS down. The problem is it keeps wanting to connect to my kitchen extender and drops the speed down to 80 MBPS. My video calls are constantly laggy as a result. I've tried rebooting the network to connect it to the right one. But it keeps switching back to the extender. This is a major issue and I've been reading that other mesh networks allow more configuration of this setting. It's the one thing that would get me to consider switching, because the speed of my internet on work devices is the most important thing.

damn.. such a basic feature, i've only owned these routers for a couple days and made an account just to check on if anybody had asked about this specifically.. ofcourse they have, clearly a specific need.

my alexa dots connect to the eero furthest away despite there being another eero just 5 feet from it. it's embarrassing honestly, and then i go to manually connect it and behold that feature doesn't exist. then behold! yall have been asking for 6 years? idk man that's far longer than i have the patience for, i hope yall update this soon with "we have heard your complaints and our team is working on a fix that should be coming in the next update"

You can try to choose a new network with the device and see if it picks up the closer node

You can also reboot every one of your devices to have them pick up the strongest connection (which should be the closest).  That's not the point.  First, there is no guarantee that the device will pick up a specific connection, second, rebooting the device is not so easy for some devices (as pointed out in other posts here), and third, since the eero network gets updated automatically on a fairly regular cadence, that means you have to go through this procedure every time the network gets updated.  That's unacceptable.

My Bambu Labs X1 3D printer refuses to connect to the node right next to it, so I end up with a 1-bar unreliable connection and can't update it. This lack of a basic feature is crazy considering the price of these things
