Block VPN traffic per profile
Can we get a block VPN traffic option on the profile option section. If a user, for example uses a VPN this will bypass the eero content filter and restrictions. It could be by blocking the ports that ipsec , pptp, l2tp, and ssl clients use. It should also act as a site filter to block sites like nord.vpn, hidemy*ss.com, and expressvpn.com for example. There are many so it would be like a category. If this feature is enabled it should alert to VPN traffic detected so it can be checked out.
For example the web browser Opera has one built in and all one would do is click the button and off they go. To block it you would need to use ports and sites:
Definitely help the parents of smart kids and their friends.
I am 12 years old and extremely tech-savvy. I have used a VPN for a few years and to answer your question, a VPN will bypass eero's network restrictions. There is no way to stop that, it's just the nature of a VPN. Personally, I use the Windscribe VPN. It bypasses my YouTube restrictions, so I know that works.
Hi Eero Experts. I am familiar with VPN, and have used one for over 20 years. I know they are secure, I know the traffic, the destinations, etc. are all untrackable if done right. BUT, I dont know if MicrosoftMan is correct in that VPN traffic itself cannot be detected. i.e. determine if Device X is on a VPN and device Y is not.
When it comes to detecting VPN traffic, it is possible. According to NordVPN:
If you know what to look for, it’s easy to find out if someone is using a VPN. With a VPN, all the user’s traffic is routed through a single IP address of the VPN server they’re connected to.
Without a VPN, the traffic will show that it’s being routed through many different IP addresses, based on the different websites the user visits. Their VPN-assigned IP address will also be different from their real IP address, which you can inspect against known VPN IP addresses.
There is also some metadata on the VPN network stream, so, I think adding some sort of VPN blocking filter to a Profile would not only be possible, but also pretty beneficial in protecting kids. That said, I understand nothing is 100%. But, just because something is not perfect, does not mean it is not worthwhile.
