Adding eero Pro to get 5Ghz

So here is my issue.  I have an existing eero 1st generation setup at my house.  I want to add the 5Ghz available in the eero Pro, but just as another hub, not the gateway.  The reason is that a lot of my "smart" devices require that I setup and troubleshoot them using only a 2.4 network.  When I need to add or troubleshoot one of these devices my plan is just unplug the eero Pro and thus drop the 5GHz network allowing my phone or tablet to only connect to the 2.4 signal.  (The move farther away to drop the 5GHz signal or call eero to have the 5Ghz disabled is not really a viable solution.)  I assume that adding an eero Pro (not as the gateway, just another hub) will automatically give me the 5GHz signal, but I have not been able to confirm this anywhere.  Anyone else do something similar to solve the same smart device issue?

  • All eero units (even 1st gen) have 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios. As you already know, the only way to add/troubleshoot a 2.4GHz only device is to move it farther away from the eero (or call and have 5GHz temporarily disabled). This is the same on your existing 1st gen eero as it would be on any newer model.
