Support for the Desktop

I'd like to have the ability to manage eero from a desktop.  The phone apps were well thought out, and work well.  However, having the ability to do this from my laptop/desktop would be very useful for me anyway.  Either browser or (for me) a Windows 10 UWP would be awesome!

omnicoreinc no and that's not very helpful to most. Why should customers have to install a bulky emulator that'll slow down theirs systems, hog resources and add a lot of work and complexity for one app, when the whole point of having an app is to make things simple?   The point of this request, is that there's a number actions that'd be better suited in a desktop sized interface and provide for ways to introduce finer control..

    • Marc You seem like a whiney bitch, it takes 3 mins to download the emulator 2 mins to install and a minute to download the eero app,  it DOESNT hog resources nor is it complex. Unless you are just "slow". So unless you have a better Idea other than crying to developers to create an app. feel free to uninstall life, thanks.

I know that was your motto when you started, but you have real competition now and you can't just sit and let yourselves die from attrition. Listen to your customers (especially those who, until now, continue to refer you). Spend a good few hundred hours on a desktop interface for those who happen to do more than the average bear with their network.

    • omnicoreinc I am not sure why your opinions are so extremely against this feature. Your suggestions for installing an emulator on an *nix machine for getting access to a feature is available on most (if not all) modern commercial router appears to be a little over the top.

Companies need to constantly add features and improve. Eero understands that. And while I went that route after much research, despite them being the most expensive solution, it does not mean the next time I 'upgrade' my network it will be an Eero product.

Requesting a browser based WebUI for router management is not exactly ground-breaking. I have used Netgear, Linksys, D-link, and other routers all of which have this feature standard. While I love the Phone App that Eero offers, the WebUI is a 'must-have' for most network savvy people. It is a lot easier to configure the devices and network on a browser if you are in a house which has multiple devices.

    • fistfullofbeer adding a webUI also adds a cyber security threat factor, It  will add additional calls to the service desk due to incorrect configuration by USERS costing money to staff those call centers and return emails, itll cost the company more money to develop the UI and pen test it. Just so you can fiddle around with settings in the hopes you can make it "more better".  EERO is great BECAUSE there are no channel selections to make no radio settings to deal with, no settings or tweaks needed, it just works. If thats a absolute need for the user they can pick another product in the same market. Everything isnt an OMNITOOL

    • omnicoreinc I would argue that accessing an interface from a WebUI INSIDE an internal network is a lot safer than accessing it from a Phone App that lets you connect to it from anywhere on the internet.

Just to clarify, I never allow my routers to allow connections to the Management WebUI from outside of the LAN. I would expect the Eero to run a simple WebUI software on the router/device itself that establishes a SSL connection to the Eero servers following authentication. They can allow MFA as well if they wanted to make it even more secure.

Honestly, all these features are not too complicated to implement and do not negatively affect the security provided by Eero. I am a fan of Eero and the lack of a Web Interface is more of an annoyance to me than anything else. But as some one who is fairly technical I definitely see the value and convenience that a WebUI would provide.

omnicoreinc This isn't a request for more advanced features, just a request to be able to access the existing features, like port forwarding and checking the status of the router, from a desktop browser. Believe it or not, port forwarding is a very common thing for even basic users because many devices don't support uPNP or it just doesn't work. Typing in IP addresses and copy/paste can be much easier on a desktop.

  • Finally set up my Eero today, just wish I had bought it this year's Black Friday and not last year's.... then I had the 2nd gen now.

So, yes, the app is nice but my first impulse after initial setup was to look up the router's web interface. Not expecting an Eero's to be as detailed and technical as dd-wrt but anything would be helpful. After all, when I work, I don't work on my phone, I work on my laptop/desktop. And from laptop/desktop, I control my Spotify playback, too, even though my phone is my primary playback device. I don't want to switch back and forth between phone and laptop/desktop.

I don't buy the security arguments. Why is a secured connection from an app more secure than a secured connection from a browser? They use the same encryption technology.

And hey, UPnP was enabled by default and you dare making security arguments?

    • mwahle Every single router web UI is insecure by default; secure login must be enabled manually, but that secure the login process ONLY, not the actual web Ui itself. In addition, all router web UI (I checked with the top 20 router vendors to confirm this, hence the delay in my response), can’t use more than 64-bit encryption using SSL 1.0/TLS 1.0, both encryption protocols known as being broken for more than 7 years.

Second, the UPNP flaw was patched several years ago, with routers and other devices made since 2015 no longer vulnerable.

      Like
    • mwahle Third, the apps used by Eero, Luma, and Google to access their respective routers use 128-bit encryption (via SSL 3.0/TLS 1.3 (latest versions of both) on Android and 256-bit encryption (SSL 3.0/TLS 1.3) on iOS 10.x and later.

And just an FYI, all the vendors I contacted confirmed that when you use their router web UI’s via an Ethernet connection on a Windows machine, all communication is done unencrypted, regardless of what the browser shows: Apple and Unix have required 128-bit encrypted communications with all networking communication wired and wireless since 2011, 256-bit encryption since 2015. Microsoft won’t make that standard till the next Windows 10 in mid-2018, and only 64-bit encryption minimum being required.

And just so so you know, with desktop communication being unencrypted, that means third party apps can “hear” everything you say over your unencrypted network, wired or wireless.

    • Richard1864 So what you're saying is that because every other vendor does it wrong, Eero would have to do it wrong as well?

While I personally would find a full local interface useful, I also understand that I'm not Eero's real target market. That's fine, I get that. But two additions would make a world of difference to me:

      1. The configuration is cloud-based. So build a web-based app that we can log in to and make changes in a desktop interface. It doesn't require any changes on the customer side of things, it's simply a different way of accessing the configuration UI: instead of using a phone app, you could jump to (say) https://portal.eero.com and do it all there.

      2. Give us what we really need locally: status information. I would love to be able to browse over to the LAN interface on my gateway Eero and see things like the status of the internet connection (do I have a physical link but the next hop is unreachable?), connected devices, etc. A read-only view is fine. I don't need to make changes, I just need to be able to see what's going on, especially when the ISP connection is down, not to mention making it easier for mwahle to check his printer status (I feel his pain!).

Richard1864 simply not true, at least for the major vendors.  Even the popular OS options, like DD-WRT and pfSense have SSL/SSH options that can be configured.  What you said about encryption is also incorrect, and it doesn't matter if it's a "Windows" machine, a MAC, Linux, iOS, Android, etc... if you're accessing a console from a web browser, it's a browser.  IE has supported 256 for sometime.   For you and omnicoreinc , you guys should be happy enough that there's an app, this thread is for people who would find it way easier to manage the eero's interface through a full browser and (for me) hoping eero will listen to the many people who do want this, and (for me) add more configuration options like some of the other mesh and some well respected router companies like Ubiquiti, etc.  Heck, even Apple, GOOG, AMZN,etc all provide browser access to most of their consumer services.

      Like
    • Marc Reread my post. I spoke to the major vendors before answering. Yes, the web UI’s can be encrypted, but at the levels I mentioned, per the vendors. In addition, that encryption has to be MANUALLY enabled, where Eero and other vendors using the apps have the encryption ALREADY ENABLED BY DEFAULT and at the highest levels for the appropriate mobile OS.  And no, Apple, Google, and Amazon do NOT provide full browser access to their devices. Apple hasn’t provided that access for several years now, and has actually discontinued their Time Capsules more than 2 years ago except for the emergency WPA2 patch. Ubiquiti is discontinuing web GUI for their devices by the end of this year. And the open source router firmware also requires manually enabling encryption, but can’t do more than 128-bit encryption.

Richard1864  My wife has an iPhone and I have an Android.  We can get to most of our the services through a web browser (iCloud and Google+) and manage devices . I can access all my Amazon Prime music, videos, alexa, etc all through a browser (any major browser).  Time Capsule is for the OSX, I can careless about a MAC.  Also, I've used WRT several years ago, and even back then that was an option. I use pfSense now for my lab, and can absolutely access via 256 or higher (self-signed or a CA).  Most have the same options.  Also, I have friends who have Ubiquiti products and they are extremely confident in saying that there's no plans on removing that.

  • Another vote for a "desktop" app.  Actually, I'd prefer a web app.  Run a scaled down web server on the eero's.  Only allow access to the web app from machines that are connected to the eero--at least for the first release.  You've already implemented APIs that the mobile app is using to access and configure the router. Just build a simple web app interface that talks to the same APIs.  Should be a quick win with minimal security risk. Another checkbox you can check off.

I haven't had flash or java plugins on my computer for a long time now, and the web admin interfaces that I've used (mainly Asus and Netgear) continue to work just fine. There seems to be a lot of misinformation here, and predictions that have not come to pass.

I appreciate the statement up front from the eero employee that eero has no plans to put resources into creating a web admin interface, that's why there isn't one. While I'd really like to see more home based admin ability that's independent of the cloud for those who would like to use that, I understand that's not how eero evolved. So I'll get the value out of the cloud-based phone interfaces (not even one that looks decent on a tablet like an iPad, where the larger amount of screen real estate would allow more information per screen), and wish that there was a web admin UI. So it goes.

This product fits a need and by opening additional "complexed" or  "Advanced" configuration via the "web interface" EERO would lose the "simple and easy to setup"  feel. It looks like over the last 24 hours this thread has escalated quite a bit...

This is a feature that has had much debate in the past. While we have marked it as Not Planned, things can change, so we encourage anyone with an interest to continue to vote on this feature.

While we understand that in a community people will differ in opinion, this space should never be used to speak negatively to others. Nor should anyone feel they cannot share their opinion on feature requests (whether or not something is currently marked in a certain way).

We have a strict set of community guidelines, and failure to follow these may result in a removal from our community:

    Treat others with respect
This is the most important rule of participating in the eero community. This is not a space to treat others rudely—that behavior simply won't be tolerated. Everyone should feel welcome to share their feedback, ideas, and any issues they may be having. But if you can’t add anything productive to the discussion, please don’t say anything at all.

If you have any specific concerns, please feel free to email community@eero.com and I'll be happy to take a look. If you haven't yet, please review our community guidelines linked out to above.

    Thanks,

As someone who is Engineering/Development myself, I know that adding this to a Product Plan would be a great start but would still mean it is months (if not years) away from getting delivered. Based on this forum there is an overwhelming response for wanting to see this feature but I do realize that committing to it would be a big undertaking. None the less, it would be nice to know what kind of response would make you guys decide to put this feature on a 'Planned' list.

Jeff C. Thank you for intervening.  I'm sorry that I felt obliged to call out what I felt was disruptive behavior.  Digital Citizenship is hard.

      Now for something constructive:

      This reddit thread:

      https://www.reddit.com/r/eero/comments/7hr7aq/eero_api_for_presence_detection_home_automation/

Led me to this recently released code.
      https://github.com/343max/eero-client

You have to be command line and python savvy, but I found it usable.

It provides dumps on the command line of  all connected devices with signal strengths and other general data.

It's certainly a starting point that someone could build a (unofficial/unsupported) web UI on top of.

I hope some of you find it useful.

Great question. As you mentioned, building such a feature would require a shift in current plans and development resources. Moreso, we have a very high standard for anything we put out, and given the need to meet that standard as well as shift the resources needed, such a feature isn't something we foresee at this time.

The reason I have it marked as Not Planned is that to some consumers, this is an essential feature. To have it marked as anything else would be misleading, and that is just not how we operate.

This is one of our most requested features. While I don't believe a certain number is going to make it tilt one way or another at this point in time (based on the above), having a continued and present interest shown will only make a better case for this feature should we ever do consider adding it as a feature.

I hope this helps, and thanks again for your continued interest.

Jeff C. Would it be possible for a web API to be exposed (OIDC authenticated) so that an external developer could create a web UI?

  • One quick comment, for those that aren't aware that the eero in bridged mode allows you to have a "main" router (for wired-only clients) and that router's web admin interface. Doing this does give you local administration of a big piece of your local networking, like attached client lists, firewall control, basically all the stuff that's included in routing, DHCP, DNS, client management, etc. Then the only thing that you're using the eero app for is administering your wireless, which isn't nearly as much left to the cloud app and data.

If you do this, use the eero in bridged mode, you will lose some of the eero's "advanced features" as described in the eero technical support notes on bridged mode, but the eero in bridge mode still has the mesh features that you got the eero for. You can also use IPv6 if needed, assuming that your main router handles dual stack and/or IPv6.

    Just a thought.

  • Another argument for an app that doesn't require a phone.  My cable modem is plugged into a GFCI outlet in my basement. That outlet tripped last week. Of course, I then had no Internet access. Where was the first place I looked?  The eero app.  And of course, the eero app couldn't communicate with my routers because the cable modem was off. A local app could have communicated directly with the routers and informed me that the problem was with the Internet connection.  Instead, I had a router app that couldn't connect to my routers.

jeffm13 Yes, I agree...the biggest problem I've had with the eero is the chicken and egg one. I need to reconfigure my eero so I can get my internet going again. But wait, I can't get to the internet so I can't reconfigure my eero. This has essentially forced me to use the eero in AP mode, since that way I have a router that keeps the internet up for the eero to communicate over. A local admin facility would simplify this considerably. Instead of having to remove the eero network and rebuild it from the ground up, I could reconfigure it simply and easily.

jeffm13 I had a similar problem about a week ago, except in my case it was a broken internet cable on a holiday weekend.

  • What's the story with the remote systems management platform? That would seem to be almost the web app that we're looking for. Just give individuals access to their own account so we can manage from the desktop.
