Devices not connecting to closest eero
A quick background on my setup:
- I am running the latest version (1.4) of the iOS app
- I am running the latest firmware (2.1.0) on my three eeros.
- My first eero is connected as follows: modem -> eero --> switch
- My other two eeros are hardwired via ethernet back into the switch.
Upon updating the iOS app, I started checking to see which devices are connected to which eeros. I was surprised at what I found.
- Most of my devices are connected to the primary eero.
- An iPad in an upstairs bedroom is connected (with a weak signal) to the primary eero which is downstairs in my den even though there is an eero in the same bedroom as the iPad. (The iPad stays in that bedroom, it never wanders around the house).
- My Rachio sprinkler controller is also connected to the den eero even though there is an eero much closer to the garage.
These are not the results I expected. I thought I placed the eeros to give me strong coverage throughout the house but the devices don't seem to want to connect to the closest available eero. I also thought since I wired them via ethernet that this would give me the strongest possible mesh network possible.
Did I do something wrong in my setup? Any suggestions on how to correct this?
Very frustrating. I have a new Sonos Soundbar that connects to an Access Point across the house. It refuses to connect to the one in the room. Works fine, so I don't really care, but it is odd. I have lots of devices that connect to distant points...again, they are working so I don't worry about it. Unfortunately, it is one of the "features" of Eeros. It will never be fixed because they feel it is not broken.
This and the ability to turn on/off a band at will is the main reasons I will be dumping this system when the next generation of MESH is available.
It's very odd.....I'm using the inSSIDer app and when I move around the house I see the wifi switch between the access points 3 in total around the house and garden. I did have the initial issue which many are experiencing but after upgrading to OS 3.19.0 it worked fine.....I have ios devices, sonos, echo's and laptops which all roam and switch to the AP's. I would like to know from eero tech why it works for some and not for others?
I have the same issue ... and dont tell me the devices are the issue. I have 3 ring units ... one doorbell ... one flood light on the garage door ... another in the back of the house ... the ring door bell talks 5ghz ... the flood lights talk 2.4ghz ... the door bell talks to the upstairs eero ... and the front and back yard talk to the upstairs eero ... the garage has an eero installed ... right next to the light ... on the inside of the garage. All connect to the fuirthest point ... when I try to watch the video on the ring the whole thing hangs ... not often ... but they must lose their connection to the eero ... and cant activate correctly. I have an android phone ... and even moving around the house the phone will only attach to the eero in the bedroom upstairs ... not to the nearest access point ... nearest eero ... I have tested this thing for days ... and actually ran an Asus wifi and turned off the Comcast wifi ... when I attach to the Asus ... my phone works ... but when I attach to the eero ... the speed is slow ... I assume I am too far from the upstairs unit.
I bought this from Amazon about 4 days ago ... it installed easily ... but my devices do not connect to the nearest eero at all ... they will always try to connect to the upstairs eero ... the backyard ring should connect to the family room ... that is where the nearest eero is installed ... and it does not ... for some reason it wants the upstairs eero ... which is further from the backyard.
The software is not real time when showing connections ... and it is hard for me to tell who and what is going on.
We have wifi in the office ... I work from a bank ... and that has access points ... and my phone seamlessly connects from one to the next ... even if I go from one floor to the next ... if I am on the 5th floor ... in Jersey City ... and go to the 7th ... it works fine.
This is what I was expecting ... not a complete failure.
I am a software engineer ... and thought that I could hack the eero ... by using an android simulator to run the eero ... its called BlueStack ... and I can run any android app on my desktop ... atleast this gave me realtime connectivity to the network, but allowed me to use the eero app.
I have tried rebooting ... all the devices ... and took my phone and disconnected from the eero and had to relog in to my eero wifi ... nothing works ... it always pushes me back to the upstairs eero ... so you cant tell me that it is my android phone that is doing this ... not when I am connecting right next to the eero wifi ... why would my phone know what or who to connect to ... it would hopefully connect back to the nearest eero ... atleast that is what is advertised ... but it does not ... dont tell me my phone has some alien inside it to reconnect to the upstairs eero ... I mean aliens dont exist ... viruses do ... but not some artificial intelligence inside my phone.
I am very disappointed in the product ... and to make matters worse ... I bought 3 initially ... and then bought 3 more ... which I have not installed because I am seeing all of the issues that have been spoken above. Had I known this ... I would have never bought this thing ... and just bought a high end router ... with some big wifi area coverage ... one big animal hanging in the central part of my house.
Right now ... I am sending back all 6 units ... one set that I tried ... and one set that is still in the box.
I am going to move to a wifi router with an access point located upstairs to ensure I have the coverage. And will add more access points if I want more coverage.
I wanted this thing to work ... and tried for days moving them around ... unplugging ... resetting ... nothing works.
I work from home ... due to covid ... and so does my wife and son (college) ... we have 1gig coming in from Comcast ... and had to move the modem to the basement due to a line issue with the cable running thru the house. I have my house wired ... and have 4 1gig hubs located in various locations ... everything is wired.
The only thing on the eero is Roku on the first floor ... which connects to the upstairs ... and 3 ring devices ... thats it ... oh, the ring base station ...
I have very little on the eero ... but when I am downstairs ... I have to use it ... the wifi is in the basement thru comcast ... and upstairs is an Asus wifi ... 1gig wifi box.
I was hoping that this eero would replace all my wifi boxes ... and make it one network instead of switching from one wifi to another ... but it does not work.
On Friday ... or Sat ... this week ... I should get the new wifi router box from Amazon ... and have that installed and turn my upstairs wifi box into an access point ... and then send back these units.
I am not upset at all ... as I did not lose any money ... but I lost alot of time testing and trying to reboot all of these devices ... it was not a nightmare ... but it was an exercise that I would never want anyone to go thru. Yes I am a software engineer for a big bank ... and we would never put out software like this ... we would be hung out to dry ... maybe it was made in China ... who knows ... maybe the dev ops guys came out of college and blew past the customer satisfaction training ... or the due diligence ... who knows.
All I do know is this thing is not worth the money or my time ... and it is going back to Amazon ... right now it is just bad plastic ... bad ... really bad.

It should be logical that the nearest eero should be projecting the strongest signal and getting picked up. As many others have pointed out, I have an eero on 3 levels of my house. Invariably my office computer connects to the one in the basement and results in lossy/freezing video conf connectivity!
I am amazed this is even problem STILL BEING DISCUSSED. I am returning this piece of junk and investing in something else unless eero has a solution.
TErrible customer service. Never recommending this product to anyone.
The ask isn’t to violate WiFi standards, the ask is for eero to fulfill its promise of being a better WiFi system, which it is currently failing for a lot of customers. Implementing the v and/or k extensions could help? I can’t think of a single manufacturer of my 50 client devices that is consistently picking up the stronger signal, so I (and others) are looking for eero to come up with a creative option. TrueMesh is already just simulating WiFi, so they’re obviously not afraid of going their own way.
If we had the ability to reduce transmit power, that would go a long way towards facilitating client roaming. But that adds complexity to the relatively simple user interface. I have a mix of mobile clients and they roam seamlessly on my home system (UniFi) with reduced transmit power. I find tweaking wifi systems more of an art than science because of all the variables at play.
The eero system is a lot easier to setup than prosumer systems like unifi though. I’ve setup a couple eero systems for relatives and they’re all happy so far.
I have several TP-Link smart switches at home. Two of switches are next to each other, but one of them keeps connecting to a weak and far away Eero beacon. Sometimes, both. Well, that should not be a problem, but the issue is that Echo/Alex reports that the switch is not responding, yet, it works in TPLink's Kasa app perfectly. I have to delete and re-discover these switches again and again, which affects the Alexa routines. I have tried everything including reserving the IP address for it. Nothing helped, and I don't know whom I should complain to. When I unplug that beacon, the issue is not there. I have 1 main Eero Pro and two beacons. The beacons have had many problems, and I ended up unplugging these beacons. It's the most frustrating product I have owned since Windows Vista.
I have the same issue 3 years after you guys! My Logi Circle baby monitor chooses to connect to a distant router with terrible signal strength despite a strong router just on the other side of the way about 5 feet away. This is scary because a baby monitor can be a life or death piece of technology. The fact that Eero doesn’t allow for a Mac Address black list on each router is astonishing, negligent, and in my case dangerous!! I expect my baby monitor to work and if it is connected to the wrong router I have no ability to switch it or force it to re-connect to another node.
Eero can you please respond to me here. I have 3 Eero Pros and am not sure what to tell my wife. Do I tell her too bad and let’s just hope it doesn’t fail us when we need it most? Is that the recommendation from Eero?
I guess I could buy one more mode just for the baby room but that seems insane given my whole house is 1500 sqft on one floor and I already have 3 Eero Pros all connected to Cat6 Ethernet.
I know you like to beat this point and you are correct to a point. The issue here is that with non Eero AP's the client switches quickly or connects to the closest one. Replace the AP with an Eero and you don't get the same behavior. Same client...different behavior. I have tested this with ASUS & Dlink AP's. I have a few Wifi lights that insist on connecting to a distant AP with a very low Signal, they ignore the Beacon that is 5ft away from them... Replace the Beacon with another AP...and they connect to it 100% of the time. Replace the Beacon with an Eero Pro, and they connect to it about 20% of the time.
I was able to trick them by turning off all the eeros except the beacon and a distant Eero Pro. Once they "found" the Beacon, they stuck to it. Brought up the rest of the Eeros and they continue to go to the Beacon.
Again, if I put the Asus AP in the Beacons place, the bulbs connected to it 100% of the time. And this is with the entire Eero network up and running.
I've tried it with Linsys Velop and BT Mesh and consistent results when moving round the house/garden in terms of devices picking up the strongest AP device signal. Switch back to Eero and it never switches from the first AP it connects to until I turn off some AP's and force it. I should get the same behaviour with all my devices no matter what Mesh network I implement.
The device makes the decision! So why does it make the logical decisions with Linsys and BT Mesh and make the wrong one with Eero?
Seems nuts to me and this thread seems to be going round in circles
I have this problem as well. HP Laptop consistently connects to farthest eero (which results in 90% reduction in potential bandwidth). Toggling Wi-Fi on laptop does not help: it always re-connects to the eero with the weaker signal. My workaround is to unplug the farther eero. This sucks :(

Also, someone posted a newer feature request 6 months ago, adding a suggestion to be able to kick a device off a specific eero so the device can rescan:

This 2nd one encompasses the request of the first one and adds a useful additional request, but it only has 4 upvotes and will take a long time before it accumulates enough to be noticed, so the first one still carries importance. Please upvote BOTH.

I'm having the same issue, but only with my Firestick. I've had my brand new system for 2 months.
Every day, it disconnects from the closest Eero (10 feet away) and reconnects to the gateway Eero, which is farther away and has a weak connection. I have reached out to customer service, and keep getting asked the same questions. How is my system set up? What are the walls made of? etc. etc.
No resolution. Every day, I restart my firestick and it connects to the correct and closest Eero. However, sometimes it disconnects when I'm using the Firestick and I have to interrupt my viewing to reboot yet again since I have such a weak signal and it's impossible to stream anything.
All other devices in the same room are completely fine and don't disconnect from the closest Eero. It's only the Firestick.
When will you have a fix for this? Nobody seems to be helpful via support. And I'm tired of giving the same information over and over. This seems to be a common problem.
