Devices not connecting to closest eero

A quick background on my setup:

  • I am running the latest version (1.4) of the iOS app
  • I am running the latest firmware (2.1.0) on my three eeros.
  • My first eero is connected as follows:  modem -> eero --> switch
  • My other two eeros are hardwired via ethernet back into the switch.

Upon updating the iOS app, I started checking to see which devices are connected to which eeros. I was surprised at what I found.

  1. Most of my devices are connected to the primary eero.
  2. An iPad in an upstairs bedroom is connected (with a weak signal) to the primary eero which is downstairs in my den even though there is an eero in the same bedroom as the iPad. (The iPad stays in that bedroom, it never wanders around the house).
  3. My Rachio sprinkler controller is also connected to the den eero even though there is an eero much closer to the garage.

These are not the results I expected. I thought I placed the eeros to give me strong coverage throughout the house but the devices don't seem to want to connect to the closest available eero. I also thought since I wired them via ethernet that this would give me the strongest possible mesh network possible.

Did I do something wrong in my setup? Any suggestions on how to correct this?

Thanks,

Mike

  • Eero Support, I respectfully submit that when our devices don’t connect to the Eero with the best signal strength that the value of a eero mesh network ceases to exist. When I go into my master bedroom and my iPhone connects to a Eero on the other side of the house with crappy connectivity this is a SERIOUS problem. As a baby step in the right direction, why can’t we use the Eero app to choose which device to connect to?  I would tell my stupid iPhone to connect to the Eero 2 feet away rather than one on the other side of my home.  While this isn’t an ideal solution, it’s a hell of a lot better than being completely shit out of luck. For the love if God, why can’t you deliver this feature?

  • It’s 2019 and I am also experiencing this issue with my iPhone X with most recent iOS. I get home and walk upstairs to the bedroom and my iPhone is virtually useless because it’s still connected to the living room eero. I have to constantly toggle with WiFi off and on. It’s pretty sad that for like a $500 “best in class” system and multiple years of complaints this isn’t solved.

I get that the device decides but eero could choose to disconnect devices with like 1-2 bars.

I know that good commercial grade wifi does not suffer from this. Come on eero team. You guys gotta solve this!

  • I have 10 eeros in a 3-story 5,500 sq ft house.

Quick math-I have $2000 invested in eeros. The system performs solidly but it's connection to my iPhone XS Max is highly illogical. The eero to which it connects is the furthest one away, and the opposite side of the house, in the basement, one level below where I use my phone the most. I tried resetting the whole network, resetting my phone, resetting all network settings, turning off Bluetooth, resetting the eero to original factory settings and still it persists in insisting on connecting to the furthest-away eero.

I don't care how much "nuance" it takes for you to address and resolve this issue once and for all. You should be embarrassed to take my money or anybody else's until it is no longer a ridiculously inexcusable issue.

Fixeero1 It is likely that you have too many eeros for that amount of square footage which is probably making the issue worse. Try removing some of your eeros. Less is actually more. It may or may not solve your problem completely but it may help some. This has been my own experience.

Jag100 Thank you for the suggestion.  I did not purchase all 10 eeros at once.  I added them when I found that I had insufficient coverage on one floor or one area of the house. I purchased the number of eeros I needed to optimize the space. As I mentioned it’s a 5500 square-foot house on three levels.  I didn’t want to waste money on coverage I didn’t need so I went through a process of adding strategically and removing any of them now reduces coverage in at least a quarter of the house on a specific level. And I do not follow your logic why the system would connect me to an eero 25 yards away instead of 5 feet. That’s the issue, not how many I have.

Fixeero1   Eero will say that the problem has more to do with the device not connecting to the closest eero than an issue with eero itself. I have reset my network settings on my iPhone X which seems to have helped quite a bit. Still, there are times when my iPhone doesn’t want to switch to the closest eero even when I turn on and off Wi-Fi. If you can demonstrate the problem consistently, after a network reset on your iPhone, I would also open up a ticket with Apple support. It’s disappointing that Eero and Apple haven’t been able to address this one.  If more Apple customers open up support tickets perhaps it will nudge things forward.

Jag100 Thanks. Read my OP again. I already reset network settings and much more.  I’m going to let eero support speak for themselves, rather than speculating what they are going to say. Obviously from this entire thread this is a big issue that is distressing many users of a very very expensive product.  And it’s not just my iPhone (another very expensive product) it is also my surveillance cameras (yet another very expensive product)  and houseguests, some of whom have a very expensive Samsung phones encounter the same issue so, yeah, I’m going to let eero handle this one. All signs point to eero on this.

nustanzen I am finding that after restarting network several times, after time, my phone is reconnecting automatically to the strongest signal.  It seems to only reconnect if the bandwidth is super slow with what I've connected to.  I agree that a mesh network should automatically change.  I was just offering something that I had found that worked.

Agree, but Eero can influence this by:

      • Providing an optimized list of APs to roam to, aka Neighbor Reports (802.11k)
      • Providing information about the traffic load on other APs (802.11v)
      • Speeding up the roaming process by providing fast authentication (802.11r)

One of the original responses indicated Eero was working on 802.11r, but nothing since.  This may not help if the device IP doesn't support these protocols, but it seems that there is something going on when devices more often than not, don't select the nearest Eero device or switch timely.  Especially if rebooting or toggling the device's airplane mode results in an improved connection.

Given we are talking about common/modern devices, I expect Eero testing to have validated this switching in their labs to ensure Eero mesh network roaming works effectively across a range of devices and implementation configurations.

I chose Eero due to it's simplicity vs having the ability to fully configure it.  Apple has gotten me accustom to having a positive user experience through simplicity vs complexity.  I may have expected to much from Eero.

txgunlover even if that were the case.. Eero is not allowing for more advanced end-users to split the bands or turn off one band if desired, adjust antenna power, etc.  If we had the ability to do either of those guess what, this thread would be closed..

  • Same issue, frustrating.  I have a 4500sqft house with 3 Base units and 2 Beacons.  One Base covers the basement, and two on the main floor (either side of the house).  The Beacons cover the upstairs and are at either end of the house also.

I have a Printer that is 5ft from a base unit, but it connects to the furthest Beacon, I have devices in the basement that connect to the Upstairs Beacon and if I force them off, they will reconnect over time.

My laptops (IBM, HP, Dell) refuse to hop .... If I carry one to the basement, the upstairs signal is very weak, but they stay connected.

When I had 4 Asus routers scattered around the house, all the devices would hop in a heartbeat to the closest one.

I dropped a lot of coin going to eero in order to have a seamless mesh...

    I have Three main issues:

    1.  Roaming sucks

    2.  Cannot specify 2.4 or 5 for a SSID (Home Automation devices are a PITA to setup)

    3.  On reboot, my Beacons come up first, so everything connects to it... related to #1, the Fix is to them reboot the Beacon causing them to drop and reconnect to another AP.

I'm standing right next to my bed room device, using my iPhone I do "Forget Network", then re-connect, and it still connects to the master device in the living room, much farther away from the one I'm right next to... ?? Is this an expected behavior?? If that's the case I'm returning the box to Amazon tomorrow. All my devices are just connecting to that one master device regardless...

It’s been over 3yrs now and that issue has not been fix yet. We should be able to choose which beacon to connect. If I want to to connect to my living room beacon I should be able to do that or my bedroom beacon and so on.

  • Hi folks.

If I'm connected to the closer eero and move to another room with the device still on, it never-never changes to the closest eero. Videoconferencing while you move is a nightmare. I have to turn off wifi and turn it back on. Every member of my family (6) faces this issue. So, I'm talking about 11 devices (smartphones, tablets, Nintendo Switch, Smart TVs). I have the latest software on my eero: 13.18.1

For years the eero team says the same thing:

"if you’re seeing weaker connections when there is a closer eero, you can toggle wifi off and back on for the device to connect to a closer eero. It should automatically connect to the best eero.

    (Wow! That's very convenient)

Again, at the end of the day, these decisions are ultimately made by the device."

I think all my devices make bad decisions all the time.

Funny... when I use the Google mesh system (at my neighbour's house - same apartment layout), my devices start making good decisions.

    Thanks.

    Happy quarantine.

  • Eero - It’s time to fix this. You’ve got a lot of people ready to return products. When looking at the better stability of Google’s alternative (for example) I can see that I would sacrifice speed for a better experience. Frankly, the speed with the alternative is still way more than acceptable ...more bandwidth than my home of 15 devices could ever use. So, good job on speed and awful job on experience. Are y’all actually planning a fix for this? If so, release date? If not, I like many others, will be returning. Wifi should be seemless.

txgunlover  So when we use alternative systems, and bounce successfully between access points, the Client needs to be fixed because this behavior doesn't work with the Eero system?   Could it be that possibly Eero got something wrong??

It doesn't work on my Dell Laptop, My Lenovo Laptop, My Android phone, and my Iphone, oh and on the Roku.  They all need to fix their systems??  This is an Eero issue plain and simple.

    • txgunlover I use an iPhone as do almost half of smartphone users. It should be Eero’s goal to make a product that is compatible (seemless) with the most popular devices, not the other way around. Simply unrealistic.

  • txgunlover  - your making me laugh.  The entire purpose of the Eero is to seamlessly mesh to provide uninterrupted wifi service.  I presume if I bought a car from you that didn't run, you would suggest moving all my desired destinations closer to me, so I wouldn't need a car.  :-)  Or you suggest I contact the grocery store to move closer to my car.

Eero - you need to fix this.  This is the core of your product and it is not working!  I actively tell people not to buy Eero because of this issue.

    •   ‘s comments read like they might be a headstrong developer at Eeros that thinks they are “right” and Apple, Dell, Samsung, etc are all “wrong” and should change their widely used products to accommodate Eero. Of course, Eero Support could never be as blatantly ridiculous as to say these things directly to their customers. . .that’d be almost like making a product that is supposed to work seamlessly and then blaming others when it does not *eyeroll.* Try adapting instead of denying.

  • Interesting that this has been an ongoing issue for 3 years now.

While it would be more elegant if the Eeros were smart enough to select the best access point for each device, it would already help if you allowed us to assign devices to Eeros. E.g. a TV isn't going to move. Let me define which Eero it should be connected to by default. I have a laptop in the basement that doesn't really move much (particularly lately thanks to COVID). It always connects to the first floor although I have an Eero very close by.

The difference is quite remarkable. This is when I'm connected to the first floor:

This is when I'm connected to the basement Eero:

The speeds are good in both cases but the difference is noticeable.

If the Eero software isn't smart enough, give us the tools to fix the problem manually and assign priorities to each Eero for each device.

EVERY DEVICE CONNECTS TO THE EERO IN MY DAUGHTER'S BEDROOM!!!

Reading the thread above it seems like this was being identified as a big issue more than two years ago!!

If I bring my laptop all the way across the house which is a rectangle shape, with an eero at each end and one in the middle, the laptop does not switch to the closer eero. It is stuck on the one farthest away.

i have checked the software is updated (4/20/20)

i have tried restarting all the eeros.

I have tried restarting WiFi on my laptop (initially it connects to the nearby eero - but minutes later, it goes right back to the farthest eero and its internet connection dies again)

I also noticed the device can be mapped to a type in eero software and that it was set to Desktop, so I switched it to laptop thinking maybe that would loosen its association to a specific eero and that didn’t resolve this.

that this issue is ongoing 3 years now really does not give me confidence it will ever get fixed

  • So I’m having this issue right now, specifically with pool automation. Two things:

    1) Please add Pool Automation as a “Type” option :)

And 2) I read the response saying the device picks. And I get that. Particularly if the device is roaming, like a phone, tablet or laptop.  It may not make sense to “force” this device to a specific Eero. However. If the device is stationary, such as my pool equipment, I should be able to tell Eero to hand this connection to a different Eero Unit. In my case, my Pool Automation was connecting to the Eero on the complete opposite side of the house rather than the one one 10 ft away. I tried turning wifi off and on on the equipment - still connected to the furthest away Eero lol. I had to unplug that Eero just so it could locate the closer one.

As to how to force this, could we not use the MAC address of the device?  It never changes and is unique. Could you guys not create some process or something where I say “Hey Eero, when this MAC address attaches, push it over to this specific Eero to handle that connection?”

txgunlover HI. I don't have much knowledge about networks and I would like to understand things better. I really thought that mesh networks were different from a regular network that uses a repeater. On these regular networks the device sometimes change to the repeater, sometimes don't. Like you said, the device is the one that makes the "decision" here. But I thought that mesh networks were different. That there was no such thing. I understood that Mesh networks generated one single "blanket" powered by all beacons. And all your device should do is connect to this network as a hole, not to specific points. I'm really ignorant on this matter. So... I have two questions:

      1. What is the real advantages of mesh networks over a regular network using a repeater? Both depend on the device making the best decision.

      2. I've spent sometime using the Google Mesh solution with 3 beacons and never had this issue. My friends too. Does Google use a different technology?

Thanks in advance. And sorry for my short knowledge.

txgunlover we need to contact all manufacturers of WiFi enabled products because Eero is the only company that follows the standards correctly 😆

Cluckey84 We clearly have enough here for a class action law suit. When the judge awards us our $400 back, plus pain and suffering for us and our families, they can order Eero to remove its false claims.

  • I recently had a similar issue with one specific device - not exactly the same, so maybe completely unrelated, but I'm curious if my "fix" would help anyone...

Anyway, I had an older iPad that would only get an IP address when connected to the main Eero. It would roam to either beacon, but almost immediately lose it's IP and never get it back unless I moved back to the vicinity of the base.

After some fruitless playing around I realized I had given this specific device a dhcp reservation a few months back when I was messing with some other stuff. Since the reservation was no longer needed for anything I removed it, released/renewed the dhcp lease and since then no issues.

So I'm just curious if anyone else that's seeing these issues is using dhcp reservations. I realize most probably aren't, but maybe ? Easy enough to check anyway.
