Can Eero Family Filters be bypassed with VPN?

I have a teenager who is somewhat tech savvy.  He knows how to use a VPN and I wonder if he can bypass our safe filters using a VPN.  Does anyone know the answer to this?  Thanks for your help.

  • Hi keegansmith – Thanks so much for taking the time to reach out, and welcome to our Community!

While it will depend on the specific nature of the VPN, the short answer is yes, the use of a VPN will allow a device to bypass the filters of eero Plus. Since eero Plus works through DNS – in other words, by checking the destination addresses of requests – then something like a VPN that bypasses the DNS will be able to avoid the filters.

Important to note, the Family Profiles feature also allows you to set a schedule for devices, causing them to lose connectivity at chosen times of day. Since this feature works off the unique hardware identifying number called a MAC address, this feature will block connection attempts regardless of VPNs or other software on the devices.

I hope this information is helpful for you! Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns and myself and the other Community members would be happy to assist. Thanks again for spending some time with us here on the forums, and welcome!

  • Thanks so much for your help.  Now I need to determine a way to keep a closer eye on his device, but I suspected this was the answer.
