Feature Request: QoS

Hi There, I would like to see two new features added to the app for managing my wifi network.  The first is just device usage so when I go in and see my devices listed can you show and track how much data each device is utilizing and report back that on the app?

Second is there any plan for adding device prioritization where I could give a certain device higher speeds for a designated amount of time?  So say give the XBOX top priority for the next hour or see a device and even turn down the bandwidth it might be using?

Two features that would greatly enhance an already awesome WiFi solution!

    Hi everyone!

    Thanks again for sharing your continued interest in QoS support for eero. In case you missed it, with yesterday's app release of version 2.17, we introduced a new section in the app called eero Labs as well as the first feature in Smart Queue Management (SQM).

    Unlike traditional QoS, which only allows specific devices to receive priority bandwidth at the expense of others, SQM works automatically across your whole system – removing confusing manual steps from the process, and making the overall internet experience better at any given moment. This means all devices can benefit from better queue management without having to push other devices into a worse network experience.

    The release of SQM doesn't mean we are no longer considering QoS down the road, however, we hope that you find the simplicity and implementation of SQM as a useful new feature to help improve network bandwidth usage across all the devices on your network.

    To enable SQM:

    • Open the eero app
    • Tap on the menu button
    • Tap on Network Settings
    • Tap on eero Labs
    • Switch the toggle to On

      Jeff C. Hey hey! How about that?!  What a smart way to introduce the feature too for us network geeks.

      Turned this on and reset the network for good measure and buffer bloat went from an 'F' to an 'A' on a Comcast business CIR connection.  That's amazing!  Looking forward to seeing how this improves real life usage on the networks between everyone using it.

      Only thing I noticed is that the connection speed from my browser tested below what the eero's local speed test can get after enabling the feature.  I imagine this is SQM in action (even though there wasn't much other activity going on the network at the time of the test), but as long as the connections are stable that is all I really care about.  See below and thoughts/comments welcome.

      Jeff C. Awesome news Jeff!  It's hard to believe I asked for this over a year ago and here we are you've implemented something better!  I can't wait to give this a try once I have my eero's back online. Long story short but currently homeless and building a home, so all eeros are in a Pod waiting for the house to be built.  Cheers!

      Jeff C. Very cool. This is great to see! My tests are matching those of mattv123 in that it seems as though eero is using its own (daily) speed tests to set the upstream/downstream speeds, and then feeding those to whatever algorithm (fq_codel? cake?) is used for QoS/SQM here. Is that a correct interpretation of what we're seeing? Or am I misinterpreting something?

      I ask only because, for whatever reason, eero's speed tests don't always clock in at (or sometimes even near) full speed of my connection.

      mattv123 been about a week now and results are excellent. The most noticeable change is a nest cam would intermittently end up buffering (spinning) when viewed on an Apple TV since switching to eero, now it hasn’t happened once since sqm has been enabled. I think this just goes to show how SQM is preventing buffer bloat with these streams, both with and without network contention. 

      Once again, excellent job to the eero team. This truly makes my Wi-Fi “just work” again on all accounts!

      Jeff C. Yeah, time to get cracking on QOS you've sat on it for too long. My phone cuts out when my kids stream or game because I can't prioritize the phone. And your feature favouring all of those at once doesn't help me at all. It's almost as if you're avoiding the request.and offering half baked solutions. Not happy!

      Jeff C. This is exactly what nobody wanted. QoS accross multiple devices so that every device can get ample bandwidth without limiting the others is what "We" want. Shamefully lazy solution

    I have shared your idea regarding device usage on an eero network with our product team. As we continue to build out in-app features, this type of feedback is invaluable for our team! 

    As for QoS, this is a feature that we've received interest in before. As we continue to build new features into eero, this is something we will continue to evaluate.

    I'll second the request for both of these features.

    Pinpointing bandwidth hogs and throttling them on the fly or prioritizing other devices would be fantastic.

    Ill top that.  Prioritization is a very good and thing to have.

    For stats however, I opened a post more into the netFlow part, to be able to see EVERYTHING

    I would also like to prioritize QoS based on day/time windows.  i.e.:  after 6pm, video/streaming should get xx% of the bandwidth.  between 7am and 6pm on weekdays, RDP/VPN should get xx% of the bandwidth.

    That's actually a stellar idea as the day/time change so do the types of usage. To build on that then let's say I have multiple profiles say ones for kids, ones for guests it would be great to say that the max bandwidth a particular group gets is say 10mbs or something like that.  That way you give the low usage to the kids or in-laws around say holidays (Thanksgiving) so they don't suck the life out of your network!  LOL. (just kidding)

    The new Google Wifi has prioritization and device usage features, so would love to see Eero follow suit soon with an even smarter implementation

    rainmkr26 Yes I remember them and in using the ToLink Google device, the device reporting was handing and the prioritization was OK but only allowed me to prioritize a device for set amount of time like 1 - 5 hours.  

    Taking this further what I would like to see Eero do is give me the ability to cap a max bandwidth a user could use regardless of how big my pipe. So here's a recent real world scenario that is hitting me.  We are trying out Directv Now - their new online streaming live TV service.  So it's pretty good but back to this topic, here is what I run into.  My wife will sit down with her iPhone, fire up streaming video on phone and magically we will start to see issues with DirectTV playing through the AppleTV.  So we have a 60mbs pipe which usually reports 40mbs or high, but the iPhone tends to eat up too much of that pipe to cause the streaming to stop.  So what I want to be able to do (unbeknownst to her) is put her into a group or specifically at her device and say cap download speeds at say 10mbs.  I believe this would solve the issue that I am running into.

      Jeff C. Here's a real world example the eero is capping my Apple TV at .1 MGbs so I can't watch HD videos that are streaming over my network from my computer. I would like to be able to tell the eero to knock it off so I can actually use the Apple TV to watch HD video.

      Your eero system won't cap certain devices, as it isn't set to deprioritize anything. If you haven't yet, please contact eero support so our team can take a look at what is going on. You can give us a call at 1-877-659-2347 or email us at support@eero.com .

      gianpo400  the Apple TV Ethernet connection speed is only 0.1 MBps.  Its the Apple TV 'limiting' you, but even that is fast enough for HD streaming.  Perhaps the problem is the source.

      Kcir I was only getting 0.1 Mbps you notice the small b instead of a capital B that means megabits not megabytes. So my speed was a thousand times slower than you thought which is no where near enough to stream uninterrupted HD video. I fixed the problem. I assumed it was the Eero because I had just installed the new eero pro and thats when all the problems started but I think it was a combo of the new eero and I was running the public beta on my Apple TV. I downgraded the Apple TV and it works better now. Still not as good as it did on the old eero I had but good enough.

      gianpo400 Gian..you will note in your original post you said "MGbs" not Mbps.  Note the use of ""G". not "b".  so your speed was in new mythical unit that I tried to logically interpret and failed miserably.  Thanks for the clarification.   Seems assumptions bit us all.   Its pity we can't go back and edit posts.   My Eero 2 is working fine with my Apple TV.   What provider do you have?  I used to be on Comcast and they would routinely throttle Apple TV (google it)... I switched to FIOS and haven't had a problem since.  Or are you talking internal from a Plex library or Apple shared library?

      Kcir Kcir sorry about that guess I had I typo. I'm streaming over my local network from my media server that in the same room as my Apple TV not the internet so my ISP isn't involved. I have Spectrum so it wouldn't surprise me if they did throttle but that wasn't the problem.

      gianpo400 thanks... that is helpful to know that its over your local network.. I am testing both the Eero g2 and velop... I really want to like the eero because of its software, but don't want to sacrifice speed so your post is very interesting to me.

    I've ordered the Google wifi which is much cheaper than the eero. I doubt it would be better than the eero but this company is slow in implementing what customers ask for. They are more implementing what they seem fit for customers. The company luma listens to customers views and implement in quick succession. Pull up your sox eero.
