Internet Speed Greatly limited by Eero Router

Hello all,

I recently moved to a new home and got setup with charter spectrum 1 gigabit internet.  Next to the router they gave me, I was getting 800+ mbps consistently.  However, I soon realized that the router was not working in different corners of the house due to being too far from the router, so that brought me to upgrading to a new router with mesh points.  I started with Amplifi which worked, but had lots of dropping issues and the router would only ever get 300+ mbps right next to the router, where as the spectrum one was still getting 800+.  I spent an hour with their support trying every setting change possible, SSID, steering, etc etc. and nothing seemed to help.

I then figured it was just a setting with their router so I got rid of that and went with eero.  Eero is now also having the same issue, its only getting 400+ mbps when the charter one is still doing 800+.  I've also tried messing with all of the network setting for the eero router as well and nothing seems to push 800+ mbps like the spectrum router, under the same conditions, same computer I'm testing on etc.

If it matters, this is the one I've purchased:

eero - Pro Mesh WiFi System (3 eeros), 2nd Generation - White

I turned off all beta features my WiFi speeds when I am closest to the main EERO is well in line with what I am getting from my ISP. There’s some expected drop off as I connect to the other EERO’s, but nothing unexpected. Much better performance now.

My issue with my Eero was not my actual system it was the hardware connecting it. Make sure you use CAT5E or Cat 6 cables. Cat 5 will not transfer your speeds efficiently.

I totally agree.   I called support and the network engineer I spoke to was able to look at my network and identify cable runs that were not CAT 6.  The better the backbone, the better the WiFi.

I've got a new EERO gen2 (3modules), 100mps to the house verified by the EERO internal speed test, but only 15-20 at my laptop even at 2 feet. if I connect directly to the ethernet cable I get 90-95. is there any way to speed up the wireless?

Hi,  I am experiencing the same issue.   I purchased 3 eero pro about 2 weeks ago.   I connected 2 of them wired and one of them wireless to my old CAT5  cables and to my new fiber cable modem.   As soon as I configured them,  it was great. I have a 100mbps plan and I was getting wireless speeds of 400 mbps when standing close to each of the 3 eeros,  I was very happy.  Then, I decided to change to CAT 6 cables and connected all 3eeros wired to the network to get more stability and speed.   When we finished the connection with the CAT 6 cables, the wireless speeds are now 20-30mps even standing right next to each eero.   I connected my laptop via ethernet to each of the CAT 6 cables  from each eero as well as the modem and I am getting the 100mbs speeds that I puschased from the ISP.   I have followed the support instructions such as disconnecting each eero and disconnecting the modem... and nothing seems to work.   I spent $500 for 3 eero pros + 200 on cat6 connection services... It is very disappointing  to spend that much money and not get at least 90% of the speeds that i am paying for.

Have you turned on any of the Eero labs features in the Advanced settings?  If so, try turning off Smart Queue Management.  That's what helped me.  Also, call Eero support.  I think they can see your network and identify the connections you have to ensure you truly have Cat6 connections between the Eero's and your cable modem.  All patch cables between devices need to be Cat6 as well.

JP  Hi JP,  yes.  I saw your message and I went to the Eero labs features to see the status and all options are off.    I will talk to support tomorrow.. thanks for the tip.   It gets worse.. I now have 5mbps down and 1mbps up.  my plan is symetric 100mbps.   arrg.

JP  I’m in my advanced settings and I don’t see anything showing Eero Labs.  What am I missing?

Befetter If you had to turn any of them off, I would do a full reboot of all eero units and then test. If you’re still having problems, try calling support. I found them very helpful. After speaking with them, my system has been stable for months.

I spoke to technical support and they told me that via wireless is normal to lose 50% of your wired contracted speed from the ISP.  eg.  ISP contract for 100mbps   you will receive around 50mbps speeds through  wireless unless you are standing right next to the eero.

Jaime. R I think the tech may have been generalizing that statement. If you loose 50mbps on a 100mbsp line, standing right next to your router, then something is wrong. I replaced my eeros, with Google nest and found that at the same distance using both had greatly different results. Eero at 10 feet using note 10 was 290mbps on a 500mbps line. The Google nest was 490mbps on a 500mbps line. Just to rule out any bias, I had the Comcast tech use a Comcast router and got 465-470 on a 500mbps line.

Its my believe that an January update to eeros is causing this. If eero cannot figure it out, we shouldn't be expected to.

Jaime. R That is a false statement, you can definitely lose some speed standing further away from the router but nothing that drastic. Also when testing speeds from within eero app it should provide speeds from eero device to router not from eero device to laptop. There are definitely problems withing eero firmware not sure why they are not addressing them and getting them fixed. Statements claiming that it's normal to lose 50% of speed from wired to wireless are simply not true. 2.5GHz should handle up to 450Mbps (depending on the standard used) and 5GHz should go up to 1300Mbps again depending on wifi standard but there should be no 50% speed loss. I am pretty close to dropping eero altogether and going with a different mesh solution.

jay FYI turning off all the extra features on eero got me closer to true speed from ISP to wireless, which it seems to suggest there is an enormous overhead to eero extra features.

Same issue. I've got ATT and turned off the WiFi so I'm using just the modem. I pay for 50 mbps and with the ATT router get 40-45mbps. I unplugged and reset my ATT router and primary Eero Pro (1 of 6 pros). Once back online, I got 40-45 mbps with Ookla speedtest.net about 8 ft away and through a wall. 5 min later I did the same Ookla speedtest and got 8-10 mbps. I've turned off all beta features, too. Just checked again and got 3-4 mbps. Any ideas what to do here?

Any body have any luck increasing speeds? I pay for gigabit service and my hardwire gets 930mbps on wifi with eero I get 80-100 with 2 eero pros and 3 pro beacons. System was not cheap.. I was expecting much faster. Comcast modem/router combo was clocking 500 but range sucked. Thought this mesh system would be better..

    any help would be appreciated.

NWfresh360 Your speeds look like what I get when I use my eero with my home Cat5 wiring.  If I am not mistaken, Cat5 is limited to 100Mbps so nothing that can be done except maybe run Cat6/6e wires?

My speed dropped to 5Mbps download and 90Mbps upload yesterday.  This is a wired Cat5 wired Eero.  I thought the eero was bad and removed it but even at the Eero at the Att Fiber modem I was getting the same speeds 5 down and 200 ish up (since that is a Cat6 connection).  I disabled the ad blocking and advanced security in the eero secure menu and the speeds went up to what I am used to.  200 up and down.  I toggled both options back on and the speeds stayed on 200.  So turning the option off and on worked although I fail to understand why it would work so.

I just experienced the same issue..  I have the eero pro and was hitting 900+ mbps with Xfinity(Comcast).  I changed to ATT Fiber and that dropped to 100mbps at best.  Spent about 2 hours with eero going through various steps, even restoring the ATT modem to factory. Called ATT and all was good on their end.  The support rep at eero contacted their engineer and looks like ATT Fiber, or rather their SmartHomeManager app, has a security setting that contains a "ATT Internet Security" that causes the issue with the speed.  Toggled off "Active Security" and viola! 900+mbps consistently on eero.  Not sure if other ISPs have the same, but worth a shot.  Good luck everyone!

In the first few months of having the Eero, the automatic speed test in the Eero app would show speeds very close (sometimes slightly greater) than the speed I am paying for. Then after say 3 months of that consistency, the auto speed test would show say 5 days out of the week with speeds close, the the other two days would show much slower speeds, say around 150down/135up. Now I rarely ever get close to ISP speeds.

The 1st generation, eero and eero Pros' max rated transmit speeds are about 240Mbps at 2.4 GHz and about 600Mbps at 5 GHz. Locally, the maximum throughput over a wired connection is 1Gbps. Maximum wireless speeds are also dependent on the capabilities of the client device.

I have this issue as well. I have all Eero 6 units.  At the gateway, which is wired directly to a FIOS router, I get 300mpbs if i remove the wire from the eero and run it to my laptop and do a speedtest.  So - 300 coming into the eero.  Once back in the eero, I am getting 90mbps wifi speeds from the laptop which is 1 foot away from the gateway.  Sometimes, if i reboot the eero or reset it, the wifi speeds will go up to 300mbps.  Later, they will fall back down to 90.  This is driving me crazy.  I know crazy is a strong description but batty is perhaps more appropriate.
