Internet Speed Greatly limited by Eero Router

Hello all,

I recently moved to a new home and got setup with charter spectrum 1 gigabit internet.  Next to the router they gave me, I was getting 800+ mbps consistently.  However, I soon realized that the router was not working in different corners of the house due to being too far from the router, so that brought me to upgrading to a new router with mesh points.  I started with Amplifi which worked, but had lots of dropping issues and the router would only ever get 300+ mbps right next to the router, where as the spectrum one was still getting 800+.  I spent an hour with their support trying every setting change possible, SSID, steering, etc etc. and nothing seemed to help.

I then figured it was just a setting with their router so I got rid of that and went with eero.  Eero is now also having the same issue, its only getting 400+ mbps when the charter one is still doing 800+.  I've also tried messing with all of the network setting for the eero router as well and nothing seems to push 800+ mbps like the spectrum router, under the same conditions, same computer I'm testing on etc.

If it matters, this is the one I've purchased:

eero - Pro Mesh WiFi System (3 eeros), 2nd Generation - White

Model:B010301

SKU:5873518

  • I just experienced the same issue..  I have the eero pro and was hitting 900+ mbps with Xfinity(Comcast).  I changed to ATT Fiber and that dropped to 100mbps at best.  Spent about 2 hours with eero going through various steps, even restoring the ATT modem to factory. Called ATT and all was good on their end.  The support rep at eero contacted their engineer and looks like ATT Fiber, or rather their SmartHomeManager app, has a security setting that contains a "ATT Internet Security" that causes the issue with the speed.  Toggled off "Active Security" and viola! 900+mbps consistently on eero.  Not sure if other ISPs have the same, but worth a shot.  Good luck everyone!

In the first few months of having the Eero, the automatic speed test in the Eero app would show speeds very close (sometimes slightly greater) than the speed I am paying for. Then after say 3 months of that consistency, the auto speed test would show say 5 days out of the week with speeds close, the the other two days would show much slower speeds, say around 150down/135up. Now I rarely ever get close to ISP speeds.

    • Hello Dominquez562 ,

If you have not already please reach out to our support over phone or email. There are a lot of causes to this symptom and we'll need to take a look at your network to get a better understanding of what troubleshooting you will require to get this speed behavior corrected. I have shared a link below that will help you find the best email and phone number to use to reach out support.

  • The 1st generation, eero and eero Pros' max rated transmit speeds are about 240Mbps at 2.4 GHz and about 600Mbps at 5 GHz. Locally, the maximum throughput over a wired connection is 1Gbps. Maximum wireless speeds are also dependent on the capabilities of the client device.

  • I have this issue as well. I have all Eero 6 units.  At the gateway, which is wired directly to a FIOS router, I get 300mpbs if i remove the wire from the eero and run it to my laptop and do a speedtest.  So - 300 coming into the eero.  Once back in the eero, I am getting 90mbps wifi speeds from the laptop which is 1 foot away from the gateway.  Sometimes, if i reboot the eero or reset it, the wifi speeds will go up to 300mbps.  Later, they will fall back down to 90.  This is driving me crazy.  I know crazy is a strong description but batty is perhaps more appropriate.

    • Hello noneso ,

Thank you for reaching out to us and welcome to the Community! Lets see what we can do about getting this resolved. The first step, since you mentioned that you have multiple eeros, is to make sure that they are placed in optimal positions. Please make sure your eeros are at least 35-45 ft away from any other eeros and also read the placement article below. This is a very important step that can save you hours of troubleshooting if this is the cause.

After you have verified that the devices are correctly placed, please let me know if you are still seeing the slow speeds. If you are, I will get you information so I can take a closer look at your network and we'll start more troubleshooting that takes a bit more time.

  • I having a similar problem.  The speed test using the eero app shows 900 mbps down, but only 75 mbps seconds on upload. I have 1g/1g fios.

my devices show much higher upload speeds, both wired and wireless.

It appears that the speed test on the app is grossly inaccurate.

No big deal, unless I have SMQ on. When I enable SMQ all uploads seem to be limited to what the router incorrectly measures as my upload bandwidth.  It appears that SMQ is not usable on my eero as long as the speed test is telling the router that I only have 75mbps upload instead of the 840mbps I actually have available for uploading.

  • I am also experiencing large discrepancies between hardwired and wired connections. I just upgraded to Cox gigablast so am just now noticing them. In the case below I am using Speedtest app on my M1 MBP with a Cat 6 patch directly wired to the eero gateway vs connected to the same eero via wifi (MBP setting literally 8” from the eero).

    Eero app: 946 down/35 up
Speedtest MBP wired: 818 down/24 up
Speedtest MBP WiFi: 539 down/33 up

    Also, just for grins:
iPhone Xs on same desk as MBP: 571 up/34 down
iPhone in bathroom: 39 down/34 up (also on same gateway eero)
These discrepancies become larger with distance as can be seen by the iPhone assessments. I’m fine with distance variances, but think the iPhone should have switched nodes to the closet one proximity wise, but it did not.

  • I grew weary of the attenuation of even hard-wired speeds that I was experiencing with the previous system about which I posted earlier (Eero Pro). I could seldom get above 600 when hardwired directly from the eero port to my MacBook Pro (about the same as when connected to my gigabit switch). Decided to upgrade my eero gateway from the eero Pro to an eero Pro 6E during prime days to see if anything improved (wifi (which I assumed would) or hardwired). Neither did. The eero (even the new Pro 6e with wifi 6) definitely broadcasts and transmits at slower speeds than it receives. The eero app stated the internet speed it is seeing is 949 Mbps. My MBP jumped directly from the Gigabit port on the Pro6E at the same time (average of 3 tests) is 706 Mbps (used patch cable that came with the eero). Wifi on the MBP (sits ~10" from the eero gateway to which it was connected (verified in the eero app)), which I expected to be FAST was only 430 Mbps. My iPhone XS within same proximity logged 527 Mbps. I really like the coverage with the eero, but do wish the performance was better. The attenuation issue is troublesome.
