More accurate device icons?

When I name my device an Amazon Echo Dot, it looks like a giant loudspeaker.  It should look like an Echo Dot.

When I name my device a Security Camera, the image should be a security camera, not a generic wireless icon.

Ditto for Nintendo Switch.  The icon should look like a Nintendo Switch, or at least a generic gamepad.

And for some weird reason, naming my Belkin Wemo Mini Smart Outlet - “Wemo Mini - Noise Machine” makes it look like a TV.  It should look like a smart power outlet.

I had a TP Link repeater prior to the Eero which in all ways was worse than the Eero, except that it allowed you to customize the icons in an obvious way.  It’s a small polishing detail that TP Link and (especially) Apple get right.  It enhances pride in ownership.

And others have expressed similar requests, for reference:

Thanks for listening!

  • Hi, Eperitus – Thanks for your feedback here!

As you're already aware, the eero app currently has the capability of selectively providing unique icons to devices, but as it happens the icons can be based either on hostname & manufacturer or based on device nickname. We have a pretty broad variety of icons already, and we're currently exploring ways to make the icons feature more robust and customizable. That said, however, we ask for your understanding that it may not be feasible to create unique icons for every potential device that may be connected to the network, and we'll likely continue to use more generic icons – for instance, our gamepad controller icon – for devices like Nintendo Switch.

We absolutely appreciate your continuing insights and thoughts, and we appreciate having you here in the Community!

    Kindly,
    Drew, eero Community Team

Drew thanks so much for the detailed reply.  Glad to hear some icons may be updated in the future.  Can you provide a list of what words currently trigger what icons?  I didn’t know there was a game controller icon, for example, and typing Nintendo Switch change anything.  Maybe if I renamed it a PlayStation ...

    • Eperitus Happy to help! The naming system works off keywords, so for instance the nicknames "Chromecast," "Roku" and "Smart TV" will all result in the TV icon on the device. For game consoles, the app should recognize any 8th Generation console name; for instance, my own Switch is nicknamed "WiiU" to give it the gaming icon, whereas my hardwired PS4 automatically triggered the icon because Sony self-identifies their hardware and the eero recognizes the MAC address of the PS4. If you're looking for a workaround, then nicknaming the Switch "WiiU" or "PS4" will definitely do the trick.

As far as which devices will automatically trigger the icons, and which nicknames will provide icons, although newer devices like the Switch aren't in our app database yet, we'll definitely continue to update the app to recognize newer devices and models!

      Kindly,
      Drew, eero Community Team

Drew Thanks!  I added the name Wii to the Nintendo Switch’s nickname and it gained the game controller icon as you said.

Is there a knowledge base article listing which keywords will get which icons?

  • Is there a list of the icons anywhere?  Some of my Alexas have a speaker icon and some don't, yet I am using the same naming convention. Would love to understand what icons are available and what text drives them.

Limon have to type Amazon Alexa as the first words in the 32 characters to get the speaker icon.

  • What's strange is I have 2 devices with Alexa in the title but not Amazon.  One shows as a speaker and one is the default.  I'm very surprised there isn't an extensive list of icons and how to get them.

Limon the list exists along with the associated keywords, but sadly they haven't/won't share it. Drew ?

  • I think it might be best to assume that this request is a dead end, which is sad - there's a list of icons and their word associations on their end, but if they were gonna share it they'd have done it by now.

yelahneb Then the best thing to do is create (and publish) our own list so at least others aren't left wondering 🙂
