Feature Request:  Custom DNS for Family Profiles

I'd love to be able to set a custom DNS for Family Profiles.  For example, use default OpenDNS Home for adults, and OpenDNS Family Shield for kids profiles.

Additionally, it would be great to specify something like that for guest access as well.

  • Hey nocturne1 – Thanks for joining the eero community, and for this contribution.

This is a really neat idea! I will definitely lift it up as a feature request. In the meantime, you can do this on a per-device basis (it sounds like you already are).

If anything develops with this suggestion, we will post here about it!

Matthew Gross Has there been any updates about custom DNS per family profiles??  This thread has been dead for 10 months. Would be nice to know since the erro plus features are not meeting my needs.

      Nabber thanks for checking in.

We don't have any updates to share at this time regarding this specific request. However, I'm happy to share your continued interest with the team.

I'm sorry to hear that eero Plus isn't currently meeting your needs. Any feedback you may have would be much appreciated as I can pass that along.

Based on how eero Plus works, allowing users to set specific content filters for each profile and their respective devices, it would be helpful to know what you are looking to do as perhaps that is something we can work towards versus a user having to have run multiple DNS.

      Thanks again!

Jeff C. Thanks for the quick reply.  In regards to eero plus, one of the biggest issues is not having any details or logs about what is being filtered or blocked.  The summary emails are almost useless and for all I know, random numbers.  It would help if you listed actual threats and blocked sites per profile so we can know what device is either compromised or being used inappropriately.  Also, the feature is too cumbersome, especially if you want or need to temporarily disable it for troubleshooting or other reasons.

As for custom DNS settings, the use case was nicely presented by nocturn1 at the start of This thread.  In short, the desire is to allow us to set of different different DNS settings on a per profile basis so we could use OpenDNS and similar products,

@Jeff C.  Hi Jeff.  Do you have any news yet?  It's been almost a year now.  The status appears to be "under consideration", which I take as a good thing but I am getting close to jumping ship (as a suspect others are).  It would be a bummer if folks gave up and switched to a competing product (with this ability) just a bit too soon.  Having some sort of ETA would go a long way toward helping folks decide if they will wait it out a bit longer.

The family profile grouping model is excellent (IMHO) and I would hate to lose that, but the need to have more customized filtering control along with whitelists and blacklists (as OpenDNS provides) is too high to wait much longer.  As for use cases here are three:   1) A child profile that only allows access to a school site, *.edu domains and google docs (via white lists).  2) a guest/default profile that restricts Netflix and other chosen sites so I don't go over my cap (blacklist) and 3) an IOT profile that restricts devices to just a select list of vendor sites or restricts outside access completely.

      Nabber —

Thanks for checking in. At this time, I don't have any updates to share regarding this feature request. All three of the use cases you provided are excellent, and I'll be sure to share them with our team.

Thanks again. As soon as I have an update to share, I'll update this thread.

  • I would love something like this as well. So far the profile settings options are very underwhelming.

  • I was just about to add this request when I found your post. This is a great idea for when the kids friends come over. I don't want to demand to see their devices and change their DNS. I just set them up on the gust network and we are good to go.

  • I also am interested in this feature as it just seems a natural extension of the idea of profiles.  It's convenient I found this post before sending a message to support!   Having the option to point to different DNS servers based on which profile the device is in would definitely be awesome.  It definitely should be extended to the guest network as well since it would further facilitate creating a default "safe zone" for everyone (think families with kids and their friends constantly bringing different devices over).   Then less restricted access can be metered out on an "as needed" basis via the main network and/or profiles.   It may even be a great selling point and provide another differential feature from competing products.

Along those lines, having the ability to create a profile that routes through a VPN would also be cool.   But again, DNS settings per profile would be really useful so I am glad to see this being discussed.

  • Agreed we need this; that's how I found this because I was researching to see if this was supported.  Sucks it's not.  If Eero wants us to use their gateway as the primary router they need to provide a bit more features (simple ones) like this.  Until then I have to use my router but then again with the limited option on the Wifi settings I'm still stuck because it's one for all setting even on the router as I can designate specific Wifi AP to use for different AP's like the guest wifi as an example. Would have been nice if the guest wifi could be configured to use a different DHCP so you could use that address pool to setup firewall rules.
