Force specific clients onto only 5GHz
I gave things a few weeks to settle in, and hoped to stop thinking about wifi. But...
Work laptop starts chugging on a meeting? Check the connection, yep, connected to 2.4GHz again, disconnect and reconnect to 5 and everything is perfect (I can't access admin settings on this, so I can't set the card to prefer 5, leaving me with the Eero to manage).
TV starts stuttering? Check the connection, yep, connected to 2.4GHz again, disconnect and reconnect to 5 and everything is perfect.
Band steering is on. "But that's a client problem" may be the mantra, and it's probably true enough on a network level, but in the end I still want a stronger way to force things to 5GHz. On all my previous routers I would separate the SSIDs so I could always connect to 5GHz, yeah that is 100% covering for a client issue, but hey, it did cover it...
I'm just not satisfied with "that's the clients fault" when a very very dumb method used to fix this just fine. If a device is known to be able to connect to 5GHz, can't there be a setting to only talk to it on that channel? It's known to work, where band steering is cautious about not breaking things and gives up and connects on 2.4GHz before a timeout.
