What should I do?


I recently discovered how crowded the 2.4 ghz band is in my apartment complex which has been causing me big issues with connectivity.

I live in a 1,200 sq foot apartment (all 1 floor) and had my eero pro 6 in the living room, which is farthest from my office/bedroom, and in the middle is my kitchen.

I figured out how to force my computers to use 5ghz which is now great but my iPhone is still a problem in my office, as I have bad cell service for WiFi calls or MS teams meetings for work so I need good WiFi and to be on 5ghz. Or else, on 2.4, I’m constantly dropping calls. So I want to avoid 2.4 ghz all together.

Band steering is enabled and I also moved my router to the kitchen last night to test, and it did force my iPhone to start connecting to 5ghz more often while in my office, but it still bounces back and forth a lot.

So I’m thinking about putting one eero pro 6 back in the living room, getting another eero pro 6 for my bedroom/office and back hauling it - that way I can always have 5ghz for my iPhone.

Is this probably what I need to do, that is, just buy another eero pro 6? Also, do you think I’ll run into issues with the client switching between access points as I walk through my apartment, say to get a coffee in the kitchen then back to my office? Just wondering it since my apartment is only 1,200 square foot if the handoffs between access points will be a problem.

  • Hi there, Kdrumz ! It sounds like adding a second eero to your network is a good decision in this case. Of course, eeros purchased directly from our site (eero.com/shop) have a 30-day refund period. That way, if your network doesn't respond well to another eero (due to having too many in a space) you can always return it.

    You shouldn't experience too many handoff or roaming issues if you add a second eero. However, I will say that your devices might not roam incredibly smoothly. You may see your wireless device "stuck" to the eero that's farther away as you move around your apartment, purely because the signal doesn't get weak enough for your device to hop to the closer eero. This can easily be rectified by toggling the wifi on your device off and back on. Your device should then grab a connection to the closer eero.
