HP printer wireless setup issue

I recently installed four eeros in my home. My iMac (OSX 10.11.6 El Capitan) cannot find my printer. I am trying to connect my HP Envy 7640.  The printer gives me the following message when printing the network details:

"ATTENTION: More than one access point/wireless router has been found that matches your wireless network name (SSID).  If this is not intended, your HP printer may connect to the wrong wireless network.  To avoid this, change your wireless network name (SSID) to be unique."

The eero app sees my printer as a connected device.

Can anyone advise?

I found the simplest solution is to assign a static IP and then install the HP printer manually

rgreenpc - Thank you so much for this. I have a Brother 3170 CDW Color Laser which was previously on an Apple network and worked flawlessly. I tried a fresh setup (factory reset the printer) and it refused to work wirelessly. I called tech support and they told me it was probably a dual band issue - the printer was switching rapidly between 2.4 and 5GHz because it was so close to the beacon. I then plugged it into the Ethernet port of the router in a different room, still no success. I wasn't happy, because I had to carry 20lb or so of bulky laser printer up more than 20 stairs to find it didn't work.

I am not a network expert, but I can look stuff up. :-)  Once I found your post, I assigned a static IP on the Brother using the LCD screen menu for wireless (IPv6 off), based on similar network numbers in our WAN. I then found the deeply hidden static IP assignment on the eero App in Network>Advanced>Reservations and entered the same number followed by Save. All is peaceful and happy in our home office now. Thank you once again. 😍

There must be something about the Apple setup that messes with the eero setup, even if you think you have done a reset on the printer. Never mind, it works now. 👍

Dawn that fixed it for me. On Brother Printer: Static IP and IPv6 off. Then add the printer to “reservations” in eero app. Huge help. If you’re having trouble finding an AirPrint printer on the eero network (like my Brother HL-L8360CDW laser printer), I’d give this a try.

Turn on the printer after making sure the main tray is loaded with paper. Select Restore Network Defaults from the Wireless, Settings, or Restore Settings menus on the printer. Obtain the network name as well as the password. For further information, see Find the wireless network password or PIN to connect an HP printer.

None of this works for me.  Been trying for 3 days to connect a brand new 3755 Deskjet.  On other routers, I've always had the option to connect separate networks for 2.4 and 5.0 but you cant do that with Eero.  HP help site says if your router is dual band, which Eero is, you cannot have the same SSID for  2.5 and 5.0  Eero  says you cannot separate them. To connect Eero says you must deactivate the 5.0 in their settings (troubleshooting) for the network to connect the printer  to 2.4.(only deactivates for 10 minutes, so work fast).  .  HP install instructions require WPS which Eero doesn't support. There is an instruction I found somewhere to first connect with a USB printer cable (square on one end - printer does not come with one). then after you get the printer working with the cable you can convert the USB connection to wireless.  I'll try that next.  If I had my druthers, I'd return the Eero but have had it too long, so if this doesn't work we'll have to return the printer and eat the cost of the ink we bought. Not a Eero fan.

      Hello nygdb ,

I was able to find that your printer can be added to any WiFi network using the HP Smart app. You will still need to disable the 5GHz when you do this. But once it is connected it should reconnect automatically if there are any interruptions in service. I shared the link below for your convenience.

    Hello,

    1. Access your eero app and navigate to the Wi-Fi settings or network settings section.
    2. Change the network name (SSID) of your wireless network to a unique name that is different from any other networks in your vicinity.
    3. Save the changes and allow your eero system to apply the new network name.
    4. On your HP Envy 7640 printer, go to the wireless setup or network settings menu.
    5. Search for available wireless networks and select the new network name (SSID) you set up on your eero system.
    6. Enter the wireless network password, if prompted, to connect your printer to the updated network.
    7. Once the connection is established, try printing a test page to confirm if the issue is resolved.

Chloepeters Just to add a point of clarification to the above, step 2 is unnecessary if your eero is already on a unique name.

What you want to avoid is having two different devices (say the ISP's modem router combo and the eero) both using the same network name, as your devices won't be able to distinguish between them.  However, if they ARE using the same name changing one of their names is a good idea (that way you know which network you are connecting your device to).

We prefer to change the modem's name to something else, that way you don't have to reconnect all your devices to the eero (if you changed the eero's name you'll have to tell all your stuff to connect to the "new" network).
