Does Eero Plus work?

I signed up for the trial of Eero Plus this evening and I'm not actually sure the value of the product is there?  My biggest fear is of the actual security through the device itself and if it blocks anything without the 3rd party software.

Example - I went to https://www.wicar.org/test-malware.html which should by itself been blocked. Instead it worked. Each of the tests on the webpage actually went through and were only blocked by Chrome and the local anti-virus.

So my question is .. if this provides no more of an advanced protection than the average stateful router with a local antivirus is it actually worth the price?  With the lacking of reporting, minor parental controls, and some sort of protection.  Anyone else feel the same way or am I out in left field?

    Hi  laborspy

Thanks for reaching out and for your question.

In regards to the site you mentioned, I am not familiar with it. However, I can ask our security team about it. If it is just a test rather than actual malware, there is a chance it may not be blocked due to the way the tool works. Our Advanced Security tool runs through Z-Scaler, a leader in the network security space.

I'd also like to make sure that you have everything enabled correctly. To check, please open the eero app, tap the menu button, tap on eero Plus, and check that Advanced security is toggled to on. After doing so, also make sure the device you are testing with is connected to your main network.

As for the other features of eero Plus, you will also receive weekly reports regarding the security results of your network, the ability to turn on ad block for all the devices on your network, content filtering, and full access to a password manager in 1Password, device-based VPN from encrypt.me , and antivirus with Malwarebytes.

Thanks again, and please don't hesitate to reach out should you have any other questions.

      Jeff C.

Yes both settings are turned on and I am connected to a laptop to the Eero device.  The tests are actually blocked my Chrome each time meaning the test packets are allowed through the Eero and onto my Laptop.  In the case of the eicar file test Chrome will block the attempt, I can allow it through Chrome and the package is actually downloaded and picked up by my local antivirus.

I will state my tests may not be the best, but it does seem that in theory they should be blocked at the Eero level and the packets should be prevented from coming into the network.  :/

Different product I know, but if a Cujo is placed in the mix it will block it before it will even hit the Chrome browser.  Works differently I know just trying to gain an understanding of how it works to make the best judgment for myself.

Jeff C.  Jeff: FYI, it appears that (at least) the Android app has changed from the last time you looked at it. At least for me, there is no "Advanced security" option in the eero Plus section of the eero Android app menu.

There is an option in the eero Plus section called "Network security."

Just wanted to confirm that's what you're referring to.

I have not received the weekly report for the past 2 weeks.  The report isn't very good to start with, but it appears that it has been discontuined all together.

applejax The report is mostly useless, since it doesn't allow any drill-down to determine which clients on the network are initiating activities that engage the threats. For instance, I need to know which clients are going to malicious web sites and what those web sites are so I can educate my family about these types of issues.

It is of NO help to simply get a list of "threats" w/no background. The eero Plus reports read like someone in Marketing created them to make the service look busy/useful and the threats to look scary, rather than actually provide any info whatsoever to help customers keep their network secure.

Jeff C.  This is a significant issue and will likely result in my cancelling of eero Plus (along w/the lack of support for Chromebooks by encrypt.me). If members of my family (or myself) are doing things that put our network security at risk, eero Plus needs to share that information w/me, rather than painting a glossy coat of "look what we did for you" and letting it go at that.

It's like a doctor telling someone that they almost had a heart attack, nearly got cancer, and came close to losing an eye, but then not giving them any info about what behaviors created those risks! I assume you'd be pretty unhappy if your doctor treated you this way, eh?  <eek!>

Can you PLEASE raise this issue w/your team and update the eero Plus reports to provide your customers the info you must already have in your logs - what they did, when, that put them at risk to Malware, spyware, phishing, and botnets. I'm happy to have eero help to protect me, but the best protection is an educated user who avoids dangerous sites and links. Help me help myself and my family.  Thanks for listening.

I don’t want to come across as a hater, or the starter of a riot.  I love my new Eero, amazing speeds anywhere in my house. Seriously kudos team!  Amazing product.

My concern is of the Eero Plus Service.  Meaning that I went to a website that is designed to test malware be replicating attacks.  This would be how malware/viruses could get into your computer.  The end result was nothing was blocked, all left through which is odd.  Pic here is from my email report from this week.

From my seat today I am not seeing a real value here.

1.) the network security doesn’t seem to work.

2.) the reporting is not there

3.) Encrypt.me feels like a proxy service not a vpn.

    4.) I already own a 1password license

    5.) most medium/large isp’s in the Us offer a free anti-virus solution.

Received my Jan 5 eero Plus report from support today.  Again, no threats. My former Cujo/Netgear would give me at least 2-3 threats per week, mostly on my Amazon FireTV devices, but sometimes a threat to suspicious site I went to on my iPhone.

I love the eero mesh system, definitely the best routers I've ever owned.  I've recently signed up for the eero plus trial and so far the VPN works great but that's a third-party app.  I've been able to set up a family profile for the kids with timed access which seems to work but the safe search isn't working which is the main reason for signing up.  Makes me wonder if any of the other network filters are working.  I see a ton of advertising for the eero plus but no manual for setting it up.

I am curious on how Eero Plus work. I already have 1Password. I also have a lifetime license to MalwareBytes which I am running on the PC now. The Eero Plus documentation seemed to say that these software are run at the network layer - does it mean it (specifically MalwareBytes) run inside Eero device to protect us? Does that mean I don't need the one in my PC anymore?

Belfong nothing really runs inside the Eero.  It’s software and apps on your computer/phone.  The network, from what I can gather, uses deep packet inspection and matches those remotely to a dbase of ip’s and signatures to block it.  So technically nothing really runs ok the Eero.

Would I suggest my parents sign up for it, possibly if they had more than just a iPad and Chromebook.  They have no wifi tv’s, cameras, or a fancy fridge that checks stock.

Do I use it myself, no.  I signed up for a month and after testing descided it wasn’t for me.  I went with a Cujo.

I too am struggling a bit with it. I am currently on the trial version and am not sure it’s worth it. I work for security company so all my end points are protected for free (IoT a little different so there is value in an umbrella scheme) and can drill into things when I need to. The reporting of plus is really weak...if you have the data, which you do becuase your are sending them out, give the users more visibility into what is actually happening. Setup a login somewhere to see this info or deliver it to the app. The parental controls are a little tough. If the kids are blocked, there is no way to request a specific URL be whitelisted or see what they are doing. I know that this product was meant to be set it and forget it for many, but there is a large audience that wants to dig into this a little more. If you want people to sign up for the service, I suggest you give those users more control vs just giving us more features / third-party products. Your tech / hardware has been outstanding! I just with I had a little more control / visibility with the data and my network. Keep up the great work and keep listening to us!

    BobbyBob is 100% right.
The Hardware rocks (even in Europe...) but where are the basic security features required (white/Black list, planning, word filters, ...)???

I am having trouble also, but with the content filtering.  I signed up for the service, created a profile, added my daughters tablet to the profile and enabled all the content filtering.  Restarted all my Eero's.

I navigate to [explicit link removed] on the tablet, and it gets to the site no problem. So much for filtering "Adult Content".

Thanks for reaching out and sorry to hear the issue you experienced with applying this filter.

That shouldn’t be the case, and we’d be happy to take a look to ensure everything is set up correctly.

Please feel free to give us a call at (877) 659-2347 or email support@eero.com .

All good now.  Not sure why but the very next day after I set it up the filtering started working.

    Thank you for replying.

One feature request would be to have the option to allow the guest network to have the eero plus security applied to it.

    Thanks again,

    Bill
